Think it’s more than a two horse race as many people on social media have suggested and think Greaneteen will come on a ton for his return. However I still think He will be beaten into third haha!
Chacun is the sexier horse here with the trainer/owner combo and the fact that the Irish horses dominated the British trained runners in top graded races last season. I also think Nube Negra is almost being disregarded by some because of CPS’s sexy profile despite beating him at Cheltenham.
Having said all that I just feel as though CPS just didnt see the race out up the Cheltenham hill and with such a small field here and a lack of pace he will dominate the race from the front, pretty much like he did at Punchestown.
The lack of a run is of course a doubt and I was really impressed with both Nube Negra’s return and Greaneteen’s Celebration Chase win last season. But I think Willie will have CPS primed for this and he will go out in front and wont see another rival.
I dont see Hitman being good enough at this stage in his career to trouble the three above and Captain Guinness’ jumping will be put to the test. Any mistake will be punished by this lot and although he was a novice last season his jumping was littered with errors.
Fascinating race and although I’m disappointed no Shishkin (who I love!) it’s still great to see three top 2 mile chasers face off.
1st Chacun
2nd Nube Negra
3rd GreaneteenI wont be having a bet in the race btw so not looking at it from a betting angle just who I think will win!
Really nice performance from Goshen, I had hoped he would become a top class Grade 1 Hurdler after his juvenile campaign and was very underwhelmed by his next couple of performances on the flat and back over hurdles.
I’d backed him AP and was resigned to the fact my slips were dead. Although I could have got three times a better price before the Kingwell I was delighted to see him win and more importantly race with enthusiasm like he did.
I agree that some of the other horses may have under performed but he looked very impressive and although I need to watch it back again Jamie Moore looked to have a tight hold of him but was happy for him to race with a lot of enthusiasm which I dont think he’s done past couple of races.
He’s a huge player here now and as Zamorston says the Triumph form has plenty if substance. Will need to try see how the race could play out tactically but plenty of horses here with a shout of winning it!
I’m not a huge Champ fan but that was a very nice performance yesterday. He jumped really well, seemed to travel well and was only beaten by a proper 2m Chaser. I actually thought Sceau Royal would win with a bit ore in hand but Champ performed a lot better than I expected.
Think it was a very good prep for the Gold Cup and will have delighted connections. However despite his improved jumping I could still see him making one or two mistakes that could cost him dearly in the Gold Cup and I’d rather back A Plus Tard around the same price.
Great performance from Honeysuckle and agree with Mike that it looks like she has improved again.
Also agree with Greenasgrass that Concertista could come here now and then we’ll have three mares Epatante, Honeysuckle, Concertista all taking each other on, I imagine that would leave BDD to go the mares and Colreevy/Elimay to go the Mares Chase.
Thought that was great run from Quilixios especially considering how long he had not run for.
I read somewhere that Jack Kennedy had said Zanahiyr maybe the faster horse after his last win but at double the price I think I’ll have a bet on Quilixios NRNB.
As I said earlier in this thread I’m on both Energumene and Shiskin at decent prices but have also got Shishkin in some tasty multiples with Envoi Allen & Chacun. I was quite pleased with the prices of these but after seeing Energumene this weekend I am now starting to worry!
Energumene was very very impressive and could see him just bowling along out front and not getting pegged back. Both horses have been superb this season and throw in Allmankind this is going to be a very good Arkle renewal if they all turn up.
Again in my last post I mentioned that playing Shishkin in running could be a good angle for anyone wanting to back him but not keen at current prices. As has been said by a few people he seems to have the same trait as Altior where he hits a flat spot and if Energumene is in front of Shishkin by 4/5L when this happens I can see Shishkin going out to 4-5/1.
These two remind me of the Douvan Vs Altior race we never got to see! Fingers crossed we will see these two lock horns in a months time
Really good race this.
Edited to add that I’m not sure on Hitman, his debut looked great and although his 2nd to Allmankind is good form, he’s still very lightly raced and would be surprised if he was ready to win a race at this level just yet.
DDC was a bit keen on her first chase start and as you may expect with a novice made a few mistakes, although it was only a 2 runner race Cornerstone lad is not a bad horse and despite a few errors she finished the race well and pinged the last 2 fences when asked to go and win.
I backed Messire Des Obeaux on his last two chase starts as I thought initially he was a fair price on his hurdling form to beat Coconut Splash and he backed that up well when beating Protektorat last time out. He was given a lovely ride By Daryl Jacob and jumped superbly (bar one mistake about 6/7 out). I know King has said he wont be going to Cheltenham due to the undulations and issues the horse has had in the past so you would think this is the main aim before maybe going to Aintree.
However I think they are going to struggle to beat Shan Blue. I was impressed with his jumping in his 1st two races this season and thought he was superb in the Feltham on Boxing Day. His jumping is so quick and doesn’t get too high or waste time in the air. I don’t think he looks like an out and out stayer yet he still finished his race well over 3 miles, however I feel dropping back to 2m4f will suit him and Harry will just bowl along in front and open up a gap in the home straight that wont be closed in time.
Like I said I think its a really good race, bookies have it spot on and if I have a bet may do F/C of Shan Blue to beat Messire Des Obeaux
Backed Sky Pirate in the Grand Annual but with him now rated 152 he’ll be one of the top weights so I’ve backed him at 16/1 for this as a cover in case they decide take advantage of his 140 rating over hurdles. Think dropping back to 2 miles has seen him at his best and he could run well here.
Also backed him for the Betfair Hurdle in case they do go back hurdling. My luck they’ll keep him chasing, put him the Arkle and he’ll get stuffed by Shishkin or Energumene
I’ve been backing Shishkin since last March, only got as big as 6/1 but happy with that considering price he is now and I staked with quite a few free bets. I watched Energumene’s debut over fences after hearing a pundit big him up on a podcast and had a nibble at 18/1 (boosted from 16 with PP) back in December.
I like Allmankind and he seems like a lovely horse but can see like last year in the triumph him tearing off before getting swallowed up by Shsihkin and Energumene.
No more bets for me until the day now where I may have another go at Shishkin in running, he has hit a couple of flat spots before running back on well in the past. Not sure if he’s just a bit sleepy or lazy at times but he did it last year in the Supreme even before he was impeded and also around 5 out on Saturday he was woken up again by Nico.
This worked well for me with Altior in the past and might be an angle for anybody who fancies Shishkin but not wanting to play at current prices (8/11 with PP NRNB). I could be talking absolute boll*cks but would think if he does get a tap or two from Nico down to neck to wake him up coming down the hill he could be a lot bigger than 8/11 and maybe a more attractive price for some.
Nap: Envoi Allen
Lay: Epatante
EW: Buveur D’airI can see Mullins coming straight here with Benie.
I read about how she can injure herself jumping fences plus she has a had a setback so they will be careful with her. We know Willie loves to get a festival winner regardless of the race, if she comes here I dont see what beats her and I think that’s how him and Ricci will look at it. She’s a superb jumper and I think she’d go very close in the Ryanair but this is a much easier option and one I think connections will take up.
I love Altior and how he battles on in the end of his races and I also love how Chacun oozes class in his races however……Both have had issues and not raced as much as they maybe should have done. After last year where neither turned up I’d be wary about backing either of them but have no such concerns with backing Put The Kettle On. Watched the Arkle back and loved how she jumped, was inconvenienced a couple times with Cash Back jumping out to his right but once she seen him off she attacked the last fence and stayed on well going away from Fakir at the line.
Her reappearance was a tough race and would be hopeful she would improve from that. I think Duc Des Genievres was given a fantastic ride from Cobden and Coleman gave her quite a bit to do, considering she made a mistake 3 out she battled on brilliantly. Perfect record round the track, seems quite a straightforward horse, stays on well and I think she has a great chance to win this.
Fantastic race. Some brilliant horses here who have been plying their trade in some top races.
Like half the field but have settled on Latrobe and Star of Bengal. I have heard they are due some heavy rain around 4-5pm tomorrow which will bring Latrobe’s stamina into play and a fast pace which I’m hoping we to get will suit.
Star of Bengal’s form not the greatest in the field but Gosden has a fantastic record in this race and he’s my 2nd bet.
Backed Phoenix of Spain last time simply as the price was enticing despite doubts that he would be able to reverse form with Magna Grecia & Too Darn Hot. But no value tomorrow.
No bet for me but fancy Too Darn Hot to blow these away and live up to his remarkable 2yr old form.
Dubawi superb sire at ascot, better prep than last race in Ireland and will improve to be the best miler in Europe this year.

Good luck for the week folks. Poor renewal this for me but still a fascinating race. I want to stay away from the Lockinge form and would love Barney Roy to show his class and win but so many ‘ifs’ in this race.
Token bet with chivers shout on Matterhorn. Jockey flying and 4/6 over a mile albeit in lower grade races. Just think this race could throw up a big price winner and I’ll have a nibble at him.
I think the Tizzards have two very good horses for this with both Elegant Escape and Native River. Both would obviously be carrying plenty of weight but for me seem to just lack the tactical speed in grade 1’s this year. Both won won the welsh national and appear to relish a longer trip.
Would also be keen on Discorama if connections were keen on coming here.
All that said I hope they bring back Tiger Roll and I’ll take the kids to see him win it again. My little girl has galloped all round the house today saying she’s “The Tiger” Only 6 and she loves him!

I’m with Boz! Not sure how so many people got riled up by potato and his love for Elegant Escape.
Fwiw I don’t think he is fast enough to win a Gold Cup as the Classier horses cruise down hill and think he gets left behind with to much to do. Think if it was raced at a frantic pace you would see him finish closer but he just appears a bit slow.
However he will win the Grand National a month later instead!
