Someone mentioned Harry Hastings-I am fairly certain that after he won the Supreme Novices he wasn’t seen on a racecourse for about 8 years until winning a hunter chase at Ayr the week before the 1993 festival.

In 2005 I found myself suddenly unemployed due to being the scapegoat for my boss(who owned the business)and his lifestyle.
Anyway I had a wife, mortgage and a child who was still to reach her first birthday.I had a few bets that won ,a few lays that lost and started upping my stakes significantly. For 3 months my(modest) lifestyle was maintained and I was actually better off then I was workingwhile at the same time getting to read the RP in the morning and watch racing in the afternoon.I wasoffered the job I am in now and I honestly had to think about it.Part of me wanted to keep going on betfair while at the same time I knew that I was on an amazing winning streak.
I would class myself as a twilight punter -capable of turning a small profit over a 12 month period but not enough to match even the most modest job.
If you don’t make it as a pro punter its not the end of the world-at the end of the day its much more enjoyable punting at the weekend -there is an incredible amount of dross during the week.
Good luck whatever road you take.

I would say this years race is worthy of a place at the festival-off the top of my head Gaspara,Refinement,Sweet Kiln,Chomba Womba and Amaretto Rose are all possibles for the race. That sets a fairly decent standard.

In 1990 I worked for one of the big 3 in London.Literally every saturday the manager would say to me to have a look for a certain docket in a certain part of the shop.He would clock punters having winning bets but not coming up to collect -mistakenly throwing away the dockets. It paid for a few beers and a kebab on a Saturday night.
I know of another shop where a regular was doing his brains one bank holiday monday and tried to smash out of trouble on a dog -the dog won but he walked out under the impression he had backed another dog.The manager asked head office about it and was told under no circumstances was he to tell the punter.

Surely its time that Ireland got an all aged Group 1 sprint.

The Dewhurst of the late 70’s/early 80’s – the super horse beaten by a maiden, finished last of 4 having destroyed everything on all his other starts. The RP did something on it a few months ago.

The horse that beat Gorytus was no maiden he had previously won the Middle Park -Dieses I think.

Chapman is the best interviewer on any racing coverge in England or Ireland-he is the only man who gets trainers to consistently offer up decent information.I thought his interview with Willie Mullins last Sunday was excellent.
He is well able to take criticism and often on the evening program he will read out the attacks he is getting from the betfair forum.

Willie Mullins admitted on ATR that Ebaziyan struggled on Saturday but he also made the point that he is a great worker at home and he expects him to enjoy the better ground at the festival.

It is often said that you should back selectively.I was always in agreement with this but since betfair arrived on the scene I have changed completely -you have practically 100% books at all times. At the weekend I would play in practically every race taking guaranteed profits whenever they arise.

I’d say it with every justification.Lydia is a very good journalist but as an analyst/pundit she is open to improvement.Incorrectly calling the result of a race at the Cheltenham festival isn’t the best thing to be doing.Having said that Zoe Bird/Hannon confidently calls the result of every photo finish when she is working.

Tim Pitt,Jim Bolger and Evan Williams would all be worthy winners.Personally I have voted for Bolger as I thought he played his hand well towards the end of the season.

Grimes -I have followed Tipperary All Star closely over the last few season and if you think he is a Champion Hurdler in the making you are way off the mark. His wins at Punchestown and Cheltenham came off very modest marks.I remember place laying the horse at Roscommon last summer. He is a million miles away from a Champion Hurdler winner. The fact that Ruby deserted him on Saturday speaks volumes.

I still think he has a long distance chase in him.
