Whilst yesterday was clearly a cock up of mighty proportions, I love the fact that there is a dress code in racing. For me it is one of the things that sets it apart from other sports.

Perhaps if other sports DID follow suit there would be less inane screaming of "GET IN THE HOLE" or "you must be xxxxing blind ref!"

What is wrong with being asked to look smart? It is "the sport of kings" after all! As someone else said you can always pay a fiver and mix with the denim and overall wearers as I used to when spending Derby day on the downs.

There is so little tradition left nowadays so I am glad that Ascot and other courses still have standards.

Ascots standards didn’t stop a guy with a pint of lager making a show of himself on terrestrial television. At least he was wearing a tie.

This thing people have with jeans baffles me. A pair of trousers is a pair of trousers (style-wise) so what they are discriminatory against is the material and colour (denim and blue). Completely illogical.

    Exactly the same trouser

    Black polyester – fine
    grey cotton – fine
    blue denim – go home

It is a form of snobbery IMO and I’m afraid, for all that Ascot has many fantastic plus points, you do get the feeling that some of those who run it would just much rather keep it to themselves and that the rest of us riff-raff would just bu**er off out of it.

Blue denim is historically working attire, akin to overalls, which has been high-jacked as a form of fashion statement in some quarters. I would no more wear blue denim in public than I would a pair of working overalls – so I can relate to why some racecourses would want to ban it from certain enclosures.

I also have no problem with strict dress codes at courses which have multiple enclosures, indeed I wish more would do so.

There is a case for not having a strict dress code in single enclosure courses but where there is a choice of enclosures then people can pay their money and take their choice.

You come across as being insecure and shallow.I was watching on television yesterday and saw someone wearing a pair of ridiculous green trousers in the parade ring-bright green trousers.

Ascot is being castigated for its dress code but at "normal" meetings the jacket and tie rule only applies to the Premier Enclosure – if customers do not want to wear a jacket and / or tie then they can go in the Grandstand Enclosure which still offers viewing of the parade ring and the racing and at less cost than the Premier Enclosure, what’s the problem?

I wonder how much of the criticism being directed at Ascot is because it is Ascot and it is the good old politics of envy coming to the fore – a form of reverse snobbery?

I don’t see too much venom and vitriol being directed towards Thirsk, for example, who have had a compulsory tie rule in their Premier enclosure for years which is enforced without exception.

There was a fairly self serving interview with Dessie in last Saturdays Irish Racing Post.
To sum it up he is bored with the job but can’t afford to retire. Betfair has done nothing for the game in Ireland. So what if he has a tendency to incorrectly decide a horse has fallen.

Was watching the betfair chase last week without a bet and very early on in the race I got the distinct impression that Revely was out of his depth.

Gordon Richards had a horse called Full Strength who was going for 10 in a row when he was killed at Ascot before Christmas in the early 90s.
Or was it the jockey going for 10 in a row?

Would Long Run be better served by a professional and more able jockey ? My answer is yes !

As for Dawn Run : great mare, but it can be reasonably argued that had it not been for the unfair, and many would say, unjust sex allowance, then her Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup triumphs may not have occured.

After her Gold Cup win she beat the reigning Champion Chaser off level weights in a 2 mile match at Punchestown. She was clearly superior to her opponents over hurdles and fences -it was just her style of running to do as little as possible.

The long and arduous campaign was a solitary race before Christmas and the Gold Cup was her 3rd race of the campaign.
Be fair you haven’t answered the question were they being greedy when they sent her to France after winning the Champion Hurdle. Also were they being greedy when they ran her twice as a novice hurdler in the space of 24 hours at Aintree.

How busy was Dawn Runs season befair -her races were well spaced out and she failed to complete in two of them including an early fall at Aintree. This was a mare who loved her racing.
You conveniently forget to mention Mrs Hills decision to campaign in France after winning Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham and Leopardstown.

Paddy Power is the one that never ceases to amaze me -must be nearly the best performing share on the Irish stock exchange since things went pear shaped. The Irish shops aren’t doing great but profits continue to rise.

Resistance to betfair in the States will be massive.Remember the bookmaker reaction to betfair in the early part of the last decade. We are talking about a country without a betting shop culture and an extremely strong religious right wing political movement.
It is possible they could succeed but equally it could prove a bottomless pit.

I’m no expert but your logic that it can’t go lower seems to be based on the fact that the share price was much higher at some stage in the last year.As a general rule the price will rise or fall with the Market unless something happens to make it outperform or underperform in relation to the Market.
I will give you one negative about bet fair it’s customers in general are unhappy with it and see it as money grabbing with poor customer service.

I resent Tom Lee flying in to do the big Irish meetings -saw him leaving the Champion Stakes meeting early last year.
