Owning a great horse is a privilege and a responsibility; you have to do everything to allow the horse to reach it’s full potential. Captain Christy and Dawn Run are examples how owners can renege on their responsibilities.
And now we have another one; seeing Sam Whalley-Cohen flapping around in Ruby’s exhaust was a sad sight. There are plenty of races for plucky amateurs to indulge their hobbies.
Do the right thing by the horse, get a proper jockey on him.November 20, 2011 at 05:36 #378758Don’t be ridiculous it’s not going to happen. Not a thing wrong with Sam. He knows him like the back of his hand which is a huge asset and it’s the horse who’s got problems not the jockey
November 20, 2011 at 07:20 #378766Hi befair, could you explain how owners of the horses you mention reneged on their duty to those horses.I know Mrs Hill insisted on Jon Joe riding her horse in the Gold Cup; beyond that I know no more.
November 20, 2011 at 07:48 #378767Sam waley Cohen is a proper jockey. Just ask his weighing room colleagues who all have the utmost respect for him.
November 20, 2011 at 08:25 #378772The owner of the horse has every right to decide who rides their horse and it is sod all to do with anybody else who is put up.
In any case Sam W-S is a perfectly competent jockey.
November 20, 2011 at 10:51 #378787So, a guy who has won a Gold Cup, a King George, 2 races over the National fences etc etc is suddenly hopeless just because he was a tad untidy in keeping a tired horse up to his work at the end of a brutally fast 3 mile chase?
Pocket talk.
November 20, 2011 at 10:56 #378790Sam is a very good jockey considering he has another day job. Not even the angel Gabriel himself carrying Long Run would have got him across the line first yesterday…beaten by a superior animal.
Got to remember the horse is only 6 (I think) so he’s bound to be green at times in his jumping…remember Kauto and his last fence thrill ride every time he went out on 2008-2009.
November 20, 2011 at 11:01 #378791I really didn’t have much time for the lad before, but after his interview yesterday on C4 I’ve changed my mind. Thought he was very good in defeat.
Original post – rubbish. Owners responsibility is to ensure the horse is properly looked after and is not abused in any way. Beyond that, it’s their animal they can do what they want. If you don’t like the rider don’t bet on the horse.
November 20, 2011 at 11:25 #378800There is, and always has been far too much nepotism in racing. Look at the way it panned out for Brennan at Twiston Davis’s yard, and Murtagh with AoB as recent examples.
That said I think that Kauto Star was simply better on the day as he appeared much straighter than Long Run to me. I don’t think that the jockey affected the result yesterday. However that is not to say that he may not in the future if confronted by the likes of Walsh, McCoy et al.
I accept that it is the right of the connections to put up whichever jockey they like, and punters should steer clear if they do not like the arrangement. It is always something that I try to do personally, and there are certain jockeys that are a real negative for me when considering a punt.November 20, 2011 at 11:29 #378801I really didn’t have much time for the lad before, but after his interview yesterday on C4 I’ve changed my mind. Agreed. The backgound of steeplechasing is sporting. Thank goodness there are lots of people who still treat it as a sport.

So you don’t know that Dawn Run should have been rested after a busy season instead of being dragged over to France? You don’t know much.
November 20, 2011 at 13:46 #378829How busy was Dawn Runs season befair -her races were well spaced out and she failed to complete in two of them including an early fall at Aintree. This was a mare who loved her racing.
You conveniently forget to mention Mrs Hills decision to campaign in France after winning Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham and Leopardstown.November 20, 2011 at 15:14 #378846Funny old world. If you run you get critized if you don’t run you get critized. Probably from a guy who never was willing to spend his own money having a horse trained.I suppose Mrs.Hill was wrong to ride her herself before she was deemed too old? Should have gotten a "proper" amature to ride in her place no doubt. The problem with Dawn Run was not racing her,not the jockey, not Mrs Hill. The problem was she was blind.Ask JJ about her fall at Aintree.I am quite aware of my shortcomings but like Mrs.Hill I too soldier on.

It’s true she made that fateful decision but Mullins being against it had nothing to do with her physical condition. He stated it was the fact she had learned to jump fences and he thought sending her back over hurdles was unfair. Jonjo and PN might just disagree with that as Don’t Push It and Big Bucks have done both and they are still around.
As we know it all went terribly wrong but any suggestion is was Charmain Hill’s fault is nonsense. That race is worth a small fortune and Dawn Run would have run twice day if you let her. "Game as a pebble" Jonjo O’Neill

Some while ago on this forum Andy included the phrase "a Kerry strand" in one of his posts. I did not know what this meant, so I posted the question "What does that mean?". Andy replied, explaining patiently to me the fun of riding horses on the beaches of County Kerry. It never crossed my mind that he might think me an ignoramus, it was just an exchange of information from the knowledgeable to the untutored.
Andy is very knowledgeable and very experienced. He likes to give the impression that he is a relatively frail octogenarian, but he only does that so he is not tempted to use his Marine Force experience and finely toned athletic 35 year-old body to scare the daylights out of people who cross him. But he really likes well-mannered folk.

There is a vast difference between putting a horse back over hurdles and sending a gold cup winner and once-in-a-lifetime mare back over hurdles in France after long and arduous season. Paddy Mullins was dead against it. Can you imagine the owners of KS doing the same thing, against trainer’s advice?
November 20, 2011 at 21:14 #378908The long and arduous campaign was a solitary race before Christmas and the Gold Cup was her 3rd race of the campaign.
Be fair you haven’t answered the question were they being greedy when they sent her to France after winning the Champion Hurdle. Also were they being greedy when they ran her twice as a novice hurdler in the space of 24 hours at Aintree. - AuthorPosts
