The prize money on offer will ensure a large field lines up! Maybe it will be a few horses under 40 but I think you can expect a near on maximum field at worst. I’d expect many of the horses who are entered actually turn up. Given that the National is the one race above all else that horses are geared specifically towards, I’d expect most of the 80 odd entrants to want to run – providing they were fit and not injured. Time will tell though.

To be honest, if anyone is stupid enough to back this horse, just because its in Ladbrokes ante post list, without researching it then the bookie deserves their money :)

Surely the difference is in the quality of the racing. UK is all Saturday centric with regards quality, not just of racing but in terms of racecourses. In Ireland its a premier rack with premier class racing. So today would have been Sedgefield and Ffos Las. If it was Cheltenham and Newbury then you can bet the quality would have been better and so the amount of runners, attendance etc would too.

At the minute Stewart Machin’s insistence on using a pun to describe every winner is annoying.

Usually it relates to the name of the horse – so if for example lightning strike won at ascot on friday he’d be all over the "and lightning strikes again – its lightning strike" type comment.

like him as a commentator if he could stop the need to do this lol

Afarid Aussie McGrath’s commentaries just annoy. One inaccruate cliche after another!

You must be a hardier racegoer than me Rob! I did watch the racing replays – very impressive winner of that bumper. Not sure if it was a great race though. It was a decent card for a random monday in December though and Gordonsville looks pretty useful as a hurdler.

Went along today and enjoyed it. Hurricane Jack and Alsahil were a good start but Fairynuff was hard to stomach lol. Few losers chucked in aside from these but enjoyable. Got bitter cold though, had to give the bumper a miss lol!

Depends if you want an armchair ride or not.

Armchair – Frankel in Guinneas or Rooster Boosters champion hurdle

Hard work – inglis drever in any word hurdle

I think John Francome is a big fan of James Reveley, especially how he presents a horse to an obstacle. Maybe his judgement of pace is out but rather see my horse jump well and conserve energy than be going half a stride too quick and making a horlicks of its fences. Time will tell if he learns to judge pace better. He seems to be riding regular winners so trainers/owners obviously think he’s doing just fine.

Was surprised no mention of Big Bucks on the list! Not that he’s a favourite but is certainly a very very very good hurdler!

My favourite from the list is dear old Rooster Booster. Sometimes racing is not all about being the best, its about being the most enigmatic or the most unlucky. Rooster Booster, forever the Bridesmaid never the bride, running placed in many top Handicap hurdles (Pierse Hurdle, Imperial Cup, Tote Gold Trophy (Twice), before winning the 2002 County Hurdle. The next 12 months saw a staggering progression of confidence and exuberance that culminated in an awesome display in the Champion Hurdle of 2003. The race was nowhere near as good as other champion hurdles past or since but the way he sluiced through the field before "Running all over this leader Intersky Falcon" – as Simon Holt put it without a hint of understatement – and powering up the hill will live in my mind for a long time. He was a tremendous hurdler, very quick over the obstacles. A real joy to behold that Tuesday in March 2003!

If he goes to the Lockinge it would be good to then see him in the Queen Anne ahead of the Eclipse and International at York.

Granted the first two should be mere formalities against horses he has already defeated but nice pipe openers for a horse like Frankel! And means we get to see him more.

Might just be best horse i ever see

So Eddie Case, just because Hanagan isn’t winning Group Ones every other weekend that makes him a bad champion jockey? Sorry, but you feeling ok or just trying to poke the wasps nest?

Last time I looked Group One races were for good horses, who are generally housed with the big powerful yards, backed by big powerful owners, who already have good jockeys enlisted to ride them. So why should Paul Hanagan go to Longchamp to watch William Buick ride a couple group winners from southern yards? He had no rides for his main stable – Fahey, with whom he has a terrific relationship – so of course he had to be at a lesser meeting in the UK.

Given the ammunition, he is as good as any other top jockey around. He very rarely gets into the wrong position during a race and he will certainly not be badly done by the new whip rules…he very rarely gets banned in the current system and doubt he will any more than the other main protagonists once the new whip rules are updated.

Anyway, judging by the responses on here, your alone Eddie Case!

I think many tracks have tried to change the draw bias that used to be very much in existance at some tracks, especially on straight tracks.

Any track with a bend, especially a bend of 180 degrees or more like thirsk or musselburgh or kempton will obviously hinder horses drawn wide. But as a punter we know this in advance, as do bookies, and this will already be factored into a horses odds.

If you think a horse drawn high will not be affected you could get better prices.

Its a phrase used commonly in explanation of defeat or in description of a horses past runs. For me, and I guess it can have different meanings, "never travelling" means the horse didn’t grab hold of the bit, was needing encouragement to keep up from an early stage, never in a rhythm.

I didn’t see the race or the ride so with reference to the stewards enquiring I have no idea.

Missed the place part by one – £45 would have been good for my £2 lol!

Actually I thought Saturdays was achieveable. And lets remember what the bet is…its a Saturday afternoon bet designed for the tv races that gives joe bloggs the chance of an exciting afternoon in front of the box and the chance to win a life changing sum. If you see it as anything other than that then more fool you!

I chuck £2 at it every Saturday, just as I chuck £2 a week at the lottery…I know which I am more likely to win…and its not got 49 balls in a machine called guinevere!

One just for fun for the anoraks, and in reference to a comment on this thread…

Name the last Derby winner to race on a Monday during his career?

    High rise?
