Café Society was frustrating, perhaps Mr Spencer expected a more instant turn of foot but felt the horse should have won. The form of the small field handicap he ran in at Newmarket in May is looking solid though, Love Marmalade won yesterday, Renew in the week…the winner that day Brass Ring must be useful.

The lack of jockeys surely prevents any whips striking noses… :)

Good stuff fellas, pretty much covered all the bases on this one already. I do think Hughes made a very valid point in the enquiry…he said we could have gone another half mile and Sky Lantern wouldn’t have got by. Not coz she was slower than Elusive Kate, but because with buick’s whip in his left hand and the horse constantly rolling left – maintaining her stride and shoulder marginally ahead, it would have been very difficult. Add in the clear intimidation I thought Hughes did well in the inquiry.

For me its summed up like a wild lunging tackle in football. "I never touched him ref" after a wild lunge causes the winger to take evasive action and lose control of the ball. You cant say a foul took place but also you could say that the actions of the offending party caused an outcome that would not otherwise have occurred.

Under the rules its correct that the result stands as cant prove conclusively that Sky Lantern would have won but using probability you’d have to say it was highly likely she would have – you have to feel sorry for Sky Lantern.

Yeah I’ve seen – but there are many ways to skin a cat as they say!

If its selections u want then my one for today is Cosimo De Medici – 25-1 for the Cesarewitch. And just to apply a little of Ginge’s logic…Stormy Weather and Western Prize are the savers lol.

Come on guys, I’m all for entertainment and banter but ur both a little long in the tooth to be fighting with yer handbags! :)

I think The Cheka and Mass Rally for me. The Cheka is a group class horse and has the physique to carry weight. He is being aimed at the race.

Mass Rally is my 2nd choice. He got no run in the Portland yesterday and based on his fast finishing York effort previously he has an each way chance. Clearly you are not gonna back a horse like him at 14-1 or so, but if he gets in the race (or indeed the silver cup) and the fact he got a blocked run yesterday means he is 20-1 or more then he will be a stonking each way bet.

Ha sto be said, O’sullivan looked awesome today! When he is on it he is absolute class.

If you could have a fairytale final surely it would be Hendry v O’Sullivan. I would walk on hot fires to see that match up. The mutual appreciation there would be incredible.

Given the change to the ranking structure in recent years its not that big a surprise half the seeds have gone in the first round. Its not like some of the results have been massive shocks.

Its too early to be talking about who is in form and who isn’t, being in is all that matters at this stage. And now the matches go first to 13 the class will hopefully out and we’ll see the O’Sullivans, Hendry/Higgins, Trumps, Maguires progress forth.

Good and I have now seen enough to take some of the 6/1 still available on the best player to ever have picked up a cue.

Hendry is down to 6-1???? Bloody hell! Talk about over reaction to a 147!

Hendry v Higgins, now thats some 2nd round tie.

Hendry looked good again yesterday and frankly what can you say? The man single handedly changed the way the game is played from tactical to attacking (yes he arrived before O’Sullivan) and he has still got it – just less often than in the past lol.

Was some break and is always nice to see some of the older brigade like Hendry and Steve Davis in previous years rolling back the clock.

And what chances we now see another 147 this year? chances must be good given the standard these days?

How many people here has a job that is say 5 days a week and rules out watching racing live of an afternoon? hands up everyone…

This very fact alone makes having Racing UK a total waste of money for me…I work Monday to Friday 9-5…well thats what my contract says is always more tho. And all they show of an evening is racing replays…which i can get free on Sportinglife.com anyway.

As it is I gain free ATR replays on there site so i can see all races "live" from all UK tracks as avoiding results till i can view at night is not that hard.

    Makes both tv channels irrelvant!

You have a choice with all weather racing – watch or dont. I was happy to take a look on saturday and even unearthed a winner or two. The quality isn’t something that overly bothers me, and it can be nice to just pick out a few races. Turf racing, especially in mid summer can be so full on with no time to breath that it is good when you get a quiet spell like this.

Was particularly pissed that Musselburgh was off today though! Was all set to head along and see a good card.

Time instead spend analysing a few races at the Festival so not all bad. Have unearthed 3 potential bets for various races so not a wasted day lol!

Very much agree with Keith Dalgleish having made as big an impact as many new trainers ever have. Another couple of winners today and I think his art is in placing horses in races that they can win. He doesn’t seem frightened to run horses in claimers, get a win or two, build up confidence and then move onwards (ie Frequency and Doc Hay as pointed out). Of course he also had Stonefield Flyer placed at Royal Ascot so its not like he cant mix it in the upper echelons either.

Arguably this season will be a tougher test than last year as he will now in theory have a stable full of badly handicapped horses (ie Neil Mulholland over fences this winter – albeit shown signs in past week of return to form).

Other trainers have had good starts in recent periods, namely David O’Meara. As highlighted Roger Varian did well, but he was a large part of the Michael Jarvis set up already.
