They look like big pockets this year, Doherty almost got a maximum in his second frame and Hendry has just got a maximum in his first session.
Only bet so far is a double on Wenbo and Hendry, the price on Ronnie is rude but Ebdon could bore/cheat his way to a scrappy win if the ref lets him get away with it.
If they are big pockets, I would suggest the established players who have won long games at the crucible before and make regular big breaks will be favoured.
April 21, 2012 at 16:25 #401670Hendry was 66-1 for the tournament high break. Looks easy now
April 21, 2012 at 22:11 #401712Higgins is a jammy get, lucky to still be allowed to play the game and lucky when he does
April 21, 2012 at 23:12 #401715Higgins is a jammy git…..

Wenbo had him on the ropes but missed an easy yellow with the rest of the colours on the spots, would of lead 9-7 but it went 8-8 instead. The reason I backed Wenbo 10-8 & 10-7 is I just knew if Higgins got 9 he would get 10.

April 22, 2012 at 08:08 #401728Hendry may have made another crucible record yesterday but today one of his old records gets beat – Luca Brecel becomes the youngest ever to play at the crucible having been given time off school to play.
Most players will be hoping Murphy messes up and today’s double is Martin Gould and Cao Yupeng at 8.28/1, yesterday’s similar priced double went down with Liang Wenbo losing the match, twice, rather than Higgins winning it.
April 22, 2012 at 20:10 #401833Hendry v Higgins, now thats some 2nd round tie.
Hendry looked good again yesterday and frankly what can you say? The man single handedly changed the way the game is played from tactical to attacking (yes he arrived before O’Sullivan) and he has still got it – just less often than in the past lol.
Was some break and is always nice to see some of the older brigade like Hendry and Steve Davis in previous years rolling back the clock.
And what chances we now see another 147 this year? chances must be good given the standard these days?
April 23, 2012 at 16:04 #401909O’Sullivan strolling at present 5-1 up. Ebdon missing too many chances, he needs to slow down………

Higgins cant play as bad as he did the other day and I’ll go for him to get past Hendry.

April 23, 2012 at 16:17 #401911I wonder if the pockets are cut a bit more generously this year and if so if this perhaps is helping with upsets? Just the sort of thing dodgy Barry would do.
O’Sullivan certainly looks to have his sensible hat on and it doesn’t seem as if cheaty Peter’s time wasting tactics will work. Good and I have now seen enough to take some of the 6/1 still available on the best player to ever have picked up a cue.

Hendry is down to 6-1???? Bloody hell! Talk about over reaction to a 147!
April 24, 2012 at 01:57 #401956Can’t believe Allen and Murphy are both out in the first three days and Allen also manages to alienate himself from a few billion snooker fans
.There’s no doubt the pockets are very generous, some of the pots this week have missed by a mile, rattled in the jaws and finally dropped. Ridiculous!
I’m going for Ryan Day to continue with the upsets by beating Ding 10-8, he certainly has the game to compete with Ding and it should be a close match.

Comparison to any player active before the pockets were made more generous in the late 1970s are impossible. It would be like lowering the cup in golf so that the ball naturally gravitated towards the hole.
April 24, 2012 at 16:44 #402019You can compare standards and achievements and dominance even if the conditions were different in past generations.
There wasn’t any major change in the late 70s or any other time that I know of, just that some tables can be more generous than others. Some of the older tables were easier than the local club in my experience.
Dott is now 0-8 down to Perry who isn’t a great player and a top break of 54 says it all. Still Ronnie’s year I think.
April 25, 2012 at 07:18 #402066I’m sure a question into the coverage by the BBC would give you an answer. It is something that commentators have mentioned more than once in past tournaments. The angles of the openings to the pockets were increased. It was not by much but it did mean that the balls had a greater chance of dropping than before.
April 25, 2012 at 12:24 #402102I think the announcer has it about right in calling Ronnie ‘the most gifted player’. Greatest player? Not for me. Greatest underachiever is a better call.

What a match, it looked all over for Day at 9-6 down, a great come back and now on the last frame decider. If Ding loses that will be 7 top 16 seeds out already.

Ding blows his chance in the decider but Day shows plenty of bottle to clear up. Could this finally be his year.
Now we have Trump and Selby struggling, could we have two more favourites lose in the first round. What a tournament, it’s absolutely wide open.
April 25, 2012 at 16:36 #402124I think it may be going the opposite of wide open.
Of the seeds gone I don’t think they were going to be winning it with the exception of Murphy and maybe Lee who had a slim chance.
O’Sullivan, Robertson, Trump, Higgins are probably laughing, they’ll not have to play a top 16 player or anyone who has won anything of note.
So far, only O’Sullivan and Robertson for me looked like they are playing well within themselves and with confidence, everyone else is struggling.
