I am not really a ratings man (horses are animals not machines) and prefer to give credence to other attributes, such as racing style.
However, I can fully understand how the Cleeve hurdle contenders were all raised as it was a race full of top horses. Like others have said, the ground was bad so I would be concerned that many of the runners who ran well on saturday are crucifying there festival chances, not due to ratings, but due to the fact the races were a hard slog!
Maybe I am missing something here, but surely as doughino says, if you are part of a syndicate which has the financial clout to cover a large number of horses in each race then you are in a stronger position than me with my £2 single line?
I think what you were missing the post immediately above yours.
Syndicates only have financial clout up to a point; the notion that they can buy the pool has proven to be erroneous on many occasions. It is indeed a level playing field, and the small punter gets the same (or better) value for his individual stake as the big boys. His chance of winning each week is correspondingly smaller, but the risk/reward ratio is the crucial measurement.
I dont really think of my £2 line in terms of value. Just an afternoon of hopes and aspirations!
Thanks guys, I will try registering with the Racing Uk website and see how I get on. Thankfully all todays action is ATR based!
With reference to Firefox’s point of Racing UK initially being subscribed due to no advsertising, I was unaware of this. Thing is, I dont mind the advertisements on ATR seeing as its free. And as I only watch the actual race itself (not the build up and idle studio chat). Once adverts start interrupting the 3m handicap chase from Folkestone then I may change my mind about adverts on ATR!!!
Pool betting is a chance to win a large sum from a small stake. But sometimes they are merely a way of having an interest in an afternoons racing when you have a day off!!
Similar to you gerald, I bought the RP today too (a nightmare 3 hour bus journey home from my old dears ahead of me, I needed something remotely interesting)! Howard Johnson sounded quite bullish about the Ryanair. I think pretty much most of yesterdays "festival trials" should be treated with caution. The ground at both Cheltenham and Doncaster looked bad and I have seen bumpers run at more of a gallop than some of the races.
I go about twice a year. And generally I go with the missus, or occassionally my mate for a good day out. This is mainly due to the fact I have to work for a living monday to friday and just cant afford to spend money going to the races (travel, food, entry can be expensive). If, by some miracle, I won next weeks scoop6 and the bonus the week after and could retire, I imagine I would go racing at least once a week. Not always that much fixtures to choose from in Scotland mind.
I do bet on every race when there though. Varied success, usually a few good each way bets.
Sounds like a few guys on the forum actually make there living from Racing (guys who can go racing more than twice a week I suspect work in racing).
I thought Tidal Bay ran well yesterday. It prefers better ground and a shorter trip and a mistake at the second aside, he didn’t jump too bad and was still travelling ok about 3 from home.
But an even bigger positive is that he has rock solid festival form. The fact he will be a working mans price helps!
This fallacy that the syndicates somehow have a huge edge in pool bets is beginning to get on my t*ts- quite simply as Chris Broom says today, their 2 quid line has the same chance as the small punter’s. Of course a syndicate is more likely to win it but that doesn’t mean they’re getting value- Nevo admits to being 80k in the hole on these bets in a six month period in his book and HF needed his last 2 wins to get in front again- let them all play, if you know your odds of winning and control your staking you’re getting better value than the high stakers.
Spot on; I keep banging my head against a brick wall trying to explain this one.
As someone who bets £2 on the scoop6 (no perms), are you suggesting I have as much chance of winning as someone betting £2000 in various perms? I take your point about getting value but given we are talking 6 races chances of all your selections even getting a clear run are slim, let alone winning! Place part of it is not bad though, feel that is winnable.
I appreciate this may have been discussed previously (I have only been member here since turn of year).
Douginho,
You know very little about racing if you think you can’t trust the Sheikh’s racing each horse on their merit. This isn’t Britain, you know.
Your missing my point here. I’m not saying the Sheikhs as owners are bent, I’m just saying with no knowledge of the trainers employed over there I just cant have a bet! To say I know very little about racing is a bit patronising really.
Lets face it – us pathologicals couldn’t give a monkeys [expletive] what’s going on in Dubai and everyone else I know thinks racing is boring.
I think you should try and make some new friends!
Seriously, though, if people find a z-grade meeting in Britain more enthralling than an a- or b- grade meeting in Dubai (where you’ve plenty of UK interest in terms of jockeys and horses), then the sport is going to go nowhere.
I have to agree with Pete. We may know some of the horses but we cant be sure that they will be the same over in dubai as over here. For a start, who is M Bin Shafya? According to my paper today (with a Dubai card) he is trainer of Conquest, Sanbuch, Military Power to name but a few!! What happened to W Haggas, L Cumani and J Hills??? I watched one race and half the field had the same colours with distinguishing caps. The vast majority are owned by the sheihk family and I just cant trust I am getting a run for my money.
At least I know where I am with those slowboat NH horses at Warwick or the slowcoaches at Wolves.
If this sounds shallow then so be it. But I just dont really care about foreign racing.
As for the snooker having more viewers than the racing thats understandable. I have no idea how the tv channels work out viewing figures, but surely many of the racing fans would have been flicking channels just to see certain races…snooker needs to be watched differently.
Cheersw Mark, thats a task for the weekend! Turn odds into percentages! I’ll give it a bash and see what I come up with.
These pool bets are good for offering a low stakes punter a big win. However, it is galling when syndicates win it. But then without there wads of cash, the pools wouldn’t be worth winning.
Not a super 7 fan mind. If you are a low stakes punter you’d be better choosing 7 horses and putting a 10p e/w acca on!
Inglis Drever, what a horse. I done my money when he couldn’t reel in Fundamentalist at his first Festival, but ever since then he has never let me down. Correct me if I am wrong, but how did a horse of his class manage to win 2 of his 3 world hurdles at odds of 5-1 (First and Second world hurdle crowns)! His first was the biggest each way steal of all time as he only had Bracouda to beat…and he was getting old!
Thanks for that Ginger tipster. I had heard about bookmakers overround and have a table somewhere detailing that but I like your explanation, it makes sense. No way would I want to make a 100% book as frankly I dont have time!
Sounds really simple in theory…just need to assume I evaluate a horses percentage chance correctly! As someone who prefrs to back things at odds of 5-1+ then I must have more margin for error with my percentages!
Agree with you there Rex. My computer can be slow sometimes but it does take much longer on the c4 site.
Unlike Channel4 racing they don’t have results up right next to where you enter the replays.
Handy tip Fist, Before you click on the Channel4 website minimise the size of your browser window as small as it goes then scroll to far right and down to the replay section. This means you can avoid the results directly next to the replays. My missus always moans at me for leaving the window size minimised for when she turns on the computer, lol!
But, I asked Mr. Gibson "what about true odds?", a horse who qualifies to be backed under his criteria, who is obviously poor value, should not be backed. Where as one in the same race who does not qualify, but is obviously value, should be backed. He did not seem to be able to answer / know what I was talking about.
Am sceptical of any pro gambler who does not know his true odds table.
Mark
Sorry guys, what is meant by True Odds Table?
