The narrative issue and personalities are key to racing’s ability to reach out to the uncommitted viewer.
In that respect you have to focus on the domestic to create the familiarity.
But after that the global scene has it’s place in much the same way as say the Champions League.
If there is significant British interest in the Arc or Melbourne Cup based on a reputation built here then it can capture the attention but if it’s 12 foreign entrants it will not do so in the same way.
January 23, 2009 at 14:26 #206005Dubai interests me that much I couldn’t even tell you a horse thats running there.
European racing flat (mainly on turf) and NH and I’m happy. I will stomach the Breeders Cup. Anything else I pay no attention to whatsoever and there are many people like that.
The Beeb and C4 for that matter would be as good as wasting their time trying to promote the goings on in Dubai.

You know very little about racing if you think you can’t trust the Sheikh’s racing each horse on their merit. This isn’t Britain, you know.
January 23, 2009 at 14:35 #206010Alot of people don’t have the patience for hose racing. We get told about a whole bunch of horses who are in contention for a race, then we have to wait an eternity for it to get narrowed down. All the while trainers tell us that there isn’t alot of options for their horses.

Your missing my point here. I’m not saying the Sheikhs as owners are bent, I’m just saying with no knowledge of the trainers employed over there I just cant have a bet! To say I know very little about racing is a bit patronising really.
