If I’d rode Cheers in the 1977 grand national.
1982, I guess you meant? 1977 was the year of Charlotte Brew and Barony Fort.

Just seeing if you’re paying attention.

Yes I meant 1982.
December 2, 2011 at 19:21 #380677I would choose to ride Grundy when he beat Bustino in the 1975 King George. As a youngster it sealed my love of horse racing.
A truly great race that sadly finished 2 great horses careers.
Mind you Grundy would have had no chance with me on board !!December 2, 2011 at 20:26 #380688It’s got to be Dessie – in the King George (not his final one though!).

1973Every time I watch that I keep thinking that in modern nationals how many jockeys would settle for second place. Clear of the third and about 15 lengths at the last.

December 3, 2011 at 03:42 #380761Id like to have been riding EiEi in his last race, then I could have pulled him up at half way and told the trainer he had done enough already for the year
Fatigue and / or the rigours of his recent itinerary did not kill Ei Ei – remember that he was a distance clear and about to win at his leisure when taking his fatal final-flight fall.
The race he was killed in, a 2m3.5f Market Rasen handicap hurdle in early June 2004, constituted just his ninth start of the calendar year – exactly as the corresponding race had done 12 months earlier.
That’s not the most excessive campaigning by Michael Chapman’s standards – compare this with, for example, Feeling Peckish’s 12 outings by the same race-week this year.
gc
True, but it was his 23rd outing since the June of ’03.
I just think there should be rules in place to stop those kind of training methods. It makes a mockery of animal welfare concerns, a horse isallowed
to be excitable when out to paddock. That doesn’t mean the horse cant wait to get back on the track, as was Chapman’s lame excuse post-race.

December 6, 2011 at 16:13 #381358Not going to treat this thread as The Jockey You’d Most Like To Shoot After A Particular Ride. So for thrill seeking:
Jumps: Desert Orchid in any King George. Wow! What a jumper!
Flat: Toss up between Frankel in the 2000 Guineas and Dayjur in the Nunthorpe. Both exceptionally fast.
