Why, on Friday, is a no-mark conditional jockeys handicap on terrestrial television whilst a novice chase (with a very impressive roll call) on the same card isn’t? This seems to happen at every single meeting.
Is it done to appease Racing UK or is it done to appease the bookies?
December 5, 2011 at 22:08 #381263Think its done to appease Countdown to be honest. And rather have something than nothing!
December 6, 2011 at 10:34 #381312I agree that Countdown is a fundamental staple of British daytime television and long may it remain.
I’m just wondering if the producers of Channel 4 racing actually feel that fans would be more interested in a conditional handicap than a top novice chase or if their hands are tied.
December 6, 2011 at 11:11 #381320It’s betting. Seventeen runners in the Conditional last year, six in the Novices.

December 6, 2011 at 22:41 #381409Changing the subject, sorry, but does anyone know if the bus’s that run from the train station when the festival is on are doing the same this Saturday?

December 6, 2011 at 22:56 #381412Nathan, the buses are only laid on for the festival and the open meetings. Looks like you’ll have to splash out on a taxi.
December 7, 2011 at 15:05 #381490The TV coverage timing is restricted by countdown that follows it. So why don’t cheltenham be a bit more intelligent with their race scheduling?

As Betlarge suggested it, sadly, is down to betting turnover – with a big field handicap being more attractive than the novice.
Sell your soul to the bookmakers and you pay the price

Buses run from the station to the course every day on route "D" (final destination Bishop’s Cleeve), and at £3:20 for a day rider are better than a taxi.

Never use it myself, but would have thought they would be mobbed-out.December 7, 2011 at 22:25 #381549Nathan, the buses are only laid on for the festival and the open meetings. Looks like you’ll have to splash out on a taxi.

Never use it myself, but would have thought they would be mobbed-out.It’s good enough for me Mr Pilsen! I live 5 mins walk from the station, and catch the bus to the track a couple of time a week. It even stops in the town centre for 5 minutes so you can sprint round to MacDonalds for a quadruple by-pass on your way in.
December 7, 2011 at 22:34 #381550Ah yes Rory, but you’re using it on non racing days- presumably for your work on Timeform Radio.
I wouldn’t want to be getting shoehorned into one of the buses this Saturday.
December 7, 2011 at 22:42 #381551True, but with buses every 10 minutes, it’s not as horrible as it seems.

I bow to your superior knowledge of public transport

Still think that Nathan will be better off getting a taxi. Though he’ll be disappointed that there’s no special bus for him…. he’ll laugh at that
… probably.December 7, 2011 at 23:20 #381556Just seen the price of the train……

Maybe you could drive Mr. P and give us a lift?

December 7, 2011 at 23:30 #381559You would be very welcome to a lift Nathan, if I was going.
But these days I prefer the quieter weekday fixtures. Give me a shout next April
