Will be interesting but for the life of me I cannot understand why he covered Annie Power unless they are looking to him to be a NH stallion – he did stay 14F and was a two time Derby winner and in my mind he could eventually end up being like another two time Derby winner in Old Vic who wasn’t fashionable enough for the flat boys but ended up a top NH stallion.

Maybe so , but Camelot also won the Guineas. Remains to be seen what will happen with his 2 year olds at distances under a mile.

As for Annie Power, why not? Quick exposure to the NH market, with probably one of the best mares in NH in a long time. Considering the need and desire to continue with Staying /Cup races and the realisation that they are important, there is a market for good stayers on the flat. St Leger -Ascot Gold Cup horses. Some of them can then try out Melbourne Cup and even the Japan Cup or Hong Kong later. It has not killed Big Orange on his travels, he was a nose from winning the Dubai Gold Cup which was a bout £400,000 worth to the winner. We saw Red Cadeaux win more prize money for just placing (and the odd Group 1 win) abroad

A lot of the Ascot Gold Cup winners now tend to be middle distance horses going up in trip due to them being slightly below G1 level at 12F/14F as opposed to those horses being bred to stay a trip (who tend to go straight to the NH field) – even Rite of Passage the 2010 winner (who started over bumpers and took in hurdling) was by Giant’s Causeway.

One could argue that Coolmore themselves cemented that trend when Yeats (one time Derby favourite and a Coronation Cup winner) moved up into and ruled the staying division.

One would have to wonder whether the offspring of Camelot/Annie Power would be quick enough for the staying races on the flat against speedier bred middle distance types but then again stranger things have happened in the breeding shed, afterall Red Rum was bred to be a miler!

These middle distance horses that went up in trip are still able to bet the so called tried and tested stayers.(your point) Still, I think it was great. At least we got to see them from 2-4 years extra rather than been sent to Australia or Honkers where they either were buried in awful handicaps or Group 3s but running at huge weights in 7 f races , hoping to get their weight for the Melbourne Cup nice and low ( HR Cecil was right , handicaps are a licence to cheat)

When you say middle distance you are referring to 10-14 f? or 12-14 f ?

Sure some of the leading National Hunt Stallions, were Craven/King George and Irish/Epsom Derby 2nds (King Theatre) , Presenting was only 1 3/4 l third in his Derby and we all know that the winner turned out to be very special.Oscar was a runner up in the French Derby and that winner turned out to be special. Milan was a St Leger winner and came 2nd to Fantastic Light in the Breeders Cup. Old Vic won both the Irish and French Derbies and was a nose from winning a King George.

Westerner, a Cadran/French Leger/Ascot Gold Cup winner, has sired a few Cheltenham winners like Cole Harden. Western was by DANEHILL! He was also , as you know, only 2 lengths behind Hurricane Run in the Arc, giving him weight. He made more one that one could have expected on the track running predominately in stayers flat races after showing that he wasn’t good enough for mile races.

Jeremy was a 7f – miler and produced interesting hurdlers like Our Conor. Then the dearly missed Montjeu, a beast! Sired none other than Hurricane Fly not to mention STS old foe and Ascot Gold Cup winner, Fame & Glory. (Saddler’s Well, some stallion, eh)

Would a Camelot/Annie Power be quick enough?

Trip To Paris was by Champs Elysee who excelled at 10f in Canada and did alright in the US for Bobby Frankel (didn’t do a lot in France for Fabre). He hasn’t really done a lot as a stallion in Europe but he was not getting the support Harleem and Jack Naylor might have been his best lot , but, he has produced some interesting fillies like Suffused who is good enough to clean up in the US in “Marathon” races (14 furlongs) she was unlucky not to win the EP Taylor last year. Not sure why they would want to keep her at 10 furlongs in the US (Beverely Dee, I would put her in against the boys for the 12 furlongs races, as most of them are rubbish) He has now gone to Coolmore as a NH stallion for his troubles. The dam of Trip to Paris was a middle distance runner and by Fantastic Light….. Trip to Paris had enough speed around Chester in the Chester Cup…..

These flashy middle distance horses with speed still have to stay.

Sure Two Time Stayers Triple Crown Winner, Le Moss, was sired by Le Levanstall, a Jersey Stakes and QEII and Sussex Champion Miler! The the Dam Sire was none other than Ballymoss , the Irish Derby . King George, Arc and St Leger winner. His old foe, and himself a Stayers Triple Crown winner, Ardross was fired by an American 10-12 furlong Group 1 winner, where speed is king. We all know that Ardross was the closest Cecil got to winning the Arc (and he was giving weight too. Ardross was of course, a head away from doing something that few unlike his own dam sire did (Levoss) win the Ascot Gold Cup, Cadran and Arc (in the same year)

AS you know, Annie Power was by Shirocco, a Breeders Cup Turf Winner (Sired Brown Panther and Wild Coco who was a staying Filly with Cecil who was less than 2 lengths away from Treve in the Vermeille and would have competed in the Arc but for injury, and had won the “Fillies St Leger” previously) , who in turn was by Monsun who sired classy horses like Novelists (King George and would have given Treve a scare if he ran in the 2013 Arc) and Protectionist who won all around him in Germany and won the Melbourne Cup , as did Fiorente . Monsun also sired Stacelita

I would definitely give a Camelot x Annie Power a fighting chance in flat long distance and even the odd middle distance races with the right owner and trainer

I put a lump on Society Rock to be top 2yo sire at the start of the season, so I hope Camelot doesn’t come to anything as
    a sire!

I fear my lad will hoover up quite a few maidens but old Camelot will steal a couple of tinpot Group or Listed races in Ireland. It could all come down the those valuable sales races.

Soviet Rock can do what he likes at as a 2yo sire, Camelot , like his father, will be expected to sire DERBY winners and other classics in the future. (not to say that SR could not produce fine sprinter milers and 10 f horses)

Fighting Irish in the 1.50 at Leicester trained by Harry Dunlop and ridden by Adam Kirby is Camelot’s very first runner.

Camelot is a sire lots of people seem to be very excited about and his progeny have been very well received in the sales ring, however, this colt can’t be doing much at home as he is priced up at 66/1!

Whilst Camelot clearly is no Frankel I’ll be interested to follow his progress throughout the season, and hopefully we’ll see some smart Ballydoyle horses come out later on.

Even though he won the Guineas, and might have won the Leger but for a poor enough ride, you think any Camelot would be precious ? Or would be a kind of horse that gets 6 furlongs? Fact he is trained by Harry Dunlop , despite the pretty decent Robin of Navan, would hardly encourage anyone betting?

Favourite : Leoparstown on Irish Champion Stakes Day and Irish Gold Cup Day. Not mad about the Christmas Festival , attendance wise, huge crowds but great cards

Sandown for Flat racing, fantastic looking course,

Ascot, there twice; once for King George Day and once for the Clarence House Day . Great course for flat race. Love to go to Royal Ascot but sounds expensive

Kilbeggan for Jumps. Okay, never going to win any major prizes or attract major races, but one knows its summer when the summer jumping comes to Kilbeggan

Least Favourite: The Curragh. Don’t get me wrong, the Curragh has one of the best race tracks in Europe. Just, the facilities and the stand are outdated. The stand looks like it is ready to cave in. Derby Day was hell sometimes. Alas we are now getting a flashy new . Considering that The Curragh is the home of Irish Classics, (and superior horses, trainers, owners and jockies……..) what was dished out to the public for all these years was not acceptable.

Galway: The stand is great, the festival , which clashes with Glorious Goodwood , actually has improved with regard to quality of horses going (still note premier of course). Quiet a few horses would later go onto bigger and better things after their visit to the Galway Festival eg Carlingford Lough, Missunited – but the race track itself is horrendous. Ye thought Epsom was bad. LOL. Takes some horse to go around that tight track, large hill and short run in. Hard enough to get a winner and it is stall biased too.

Do you think Hugo has lost the plot a bit, Steve? A few strange decisions from him lately and seems to be messing Josie Gordon around with the riding arrangements. I’m sure the owners have a say too, but Hugo Agogo seems to jock his supposed ‘stable jockey’ on and off all the time. He was tetchy when RUK popped him that question the other day too.

Bit of a strange move to go up in trip with Majoris tomorrow too, looks like the last thing that horse needs based on his run last time out.

Gordon IS NOT Palmers’ “stable jockey”. Media as usual ignore what the man actually said

He said that he would have her ridding out, BUT, the big named jocks (he specifically referred to Pat Smullen) would be getting his horses when available on the big days .

This is what Palmer actually said at the start of January 2017

” “I’m going to pay her to work for me.

Josephine will be riding out at Kremlin Cottage Stables every morning, in a similar way to how Pat Cosgrave does for William Haggas and Robert Havlin does for John Gosden.

Skilled people make good horses. She will get lots of opportunities, and lots of my owners want to use her.

She’s not going to be my stable jockey or what I would describe as number one, but she will be a major part of the team.

Now she’s ridden out her claim this will make things more official.

She’s fully aware that on big days someone like Pat Smullen could take over on a horse she has won on previously, but that might not always be the case.

This gives her a chance to take her career to the next level.”

Now, Pat , who helped Palmer to win an Irish Oaks and French Group 1 and a huge prize money 2 year old race in 2015, has not been to England much this year, and, with the way Weld is going (slower than usual at this point of the year, looks like some of his better horses might be going to Galway after all this year, unlike last year, he might be wanted in Ireland

Minding & Seventh Heaven aside, I am not sure he has enough firepower in the 10F/12F races to make a realistic attempt this season

Looking at it without my Rose Tinted Spectacles on for a moment. Last year i can recall Oaks, Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks, King George, Arc and BC Turf where they won between 10 – 12 F. Probably more, i’m not sure. Possibly it could be a struggle to match that, but i could see Minding winning 2 at least this year.

Interesting you left Highland Reel off the list, for some reason he seems to never of received any recognition for his victories last year. If you excuse his run on very soft ground in Dubai i think he is a top class performer who could still improve further.

Yes, but, he did say “Minding & Seventh Heaven aside,”

Some training feat to get Highland Reel producing the form that he did at 12 furlongs again this season. I would not be backing him in a hurry.

I wish they left him at 12f distance. Granted he ran well at York, I would prefer if he is raced lighter and compete at the 12 furlong races only, no more 10f races , so long as the ground is good. Grand Prix St Cloud might be worth a shot, might not be worth as much dosh but…………winning another Group 1 in another country sounds good for the horse.

I really wish he never ran in Australia at 10f , because it is the ONLY reason for justifying Winx’s lofty position in the world rankings. Her hardcore fans never shut up about it

Soul Stirring is more like Stacelita in attitude than Frankel, she’s not a flashy ball of temperament like Swiss Storm or Seven Heavens. The grinding untypical Frankels are the ones that’ll excel.

That’s what makes the unexciting Cracksman such a genuine threat for the Derby.Atty Persse was not a horse that impressed in the last race but he was already prepared to get the head down and fight. Eminent might do well in some Derby like the Irish ,just not Epsom and then onto the St Leger where his kick of pace will really ask questions of the other horses

What a mess the Derby picture is. The way it’s looking we could have three or four ledger types battling it out in the last furlong. My tip has been for a while cliffs of moher but can’t guarantee he’ll stay the 12f. Venice beach will stay but will he find one or two quicker. Permian is a handicapper and wins the Dante. Cracksman going there after only two runs. Good luck in finding the winner. The way Aiden was speaking they really fancy cliffs of moher so I’ll stick to him.

Why all the hate (I use that word loosely) for the St Leger?

Endless Time , for me, but, this is York, and if she goes off favourite, I’m doomed

She can get the distances, she seems to be able for the soft ground, she will carry less weight than Simple Verse, he has ran in top company for most of last season.

TO, of course it is a tall order without a doubt, but certainly possible especially especially with 160+ 2 year olds this year. To be fair they don’t really get going till after Royal Ascot.

I would say if they have over 6 on the board by the end of June it could get quite close, and they will certainly be knocking up a few air miles this year. The Weld filly showed at the weekend that the US G1 races are certainly within reach.

Aidan has been proving that for over a decade. Surprised the likes of Gosden did not often send over a horse during Belmont or Arlington. Likewise Godolpin . American turf racing at 10-12 furlongs is poor, and most of the jockeys are clueless on turf

I can see why you are infuriated Steve, in a sense you are unlucky, if they didn’t have Enable they would run her of course and I think they are making a mistake anyway because I think Shutter Speed is the better horse. Although maybe this is also a tip for Enable if Shutter speed is this good and they’re still not sending her there.

Or, Gosden is certain that SS will not stay 12 furlongs

Dansili, despite being a sprinter, has produced mostly middle distance horses, classy Arc winning horses.

But the mother, she did not stay, SS’ sibling did not stay, and the only decent middle distance progeny of Oasis Dream, the dam sire , was Midday, and her best trip was 9-10 furlongs

Think the record could be under threat. With Churchill Caravaggio order of the garter plus a few very promising 3 yr olds plus minding, seventh heaven, order of stgeorge somehow plus Idaho and highland reel.

It is going to be a tall order. Not too sure that he has an Epsom Derby winner. Might get the Irish Derby and Grand Prix De Paris if he was to go looking for it. Normally goes looking for the French Derby. Bound to win at least 2 Group 1s from the Belmont and Arlington mid summer meetings. Churchill , if he stays at a mile might clean up with the Irish and St James Stakes, and maybe try something like a Eclipse (or just continue with mile races like QEII) Minding may well win one or two Group 1s but ought to try against the boys where she will get some weight allowance as oppose to running against her own sex, not to mention more money in the lads races (Lockinge, Queen Anne, Sussex) His record in the Irish Champion Stakes in recent years and being a bit hit and miss and brutal , win wise, in the British CS. While OSG was only out for a prep run last time, he may have a tougher Gold Cup this year, a few nice stayers there.Would be extremely surprised if Highland Reel still has the legs and tank to keep going.

If he was to break Frankel’s record it would be a much better achievement because in doing so he would have to win Group 1s in at least 3-4 (even 5) different countries to do so.Frankel won at least 9 of his at Belmont Track and 5 at Santa Anita and 1 at the track almost next door to it.Despite the domination…….no Breeders Cup that year.

    Mirage Dancer was drawn wide

    As was Cliffs of Moher

and immediately taken to the inner. He seemed to get a little outpaced towards the end of the back straight and then had nowhere to go for half a furlong or so until the tuck-away.

If he had taken a similar wide route as Cliffs of Moher , would he have stayed the trip , given a clearer path, but made to run prominently? Was he looking for the rail to save ground?

Once clear he picked up well. With a clear run he might have been in the first 3 but he wouldn’t have won.

Third at best. I would not have been hard on Murphy for the ride. This was the horse’s first time out this season, is he a stayer? Granted, he is a Frankel so he may well be, but his mother’s side and what she has produced (really don’t think much of US Group 1s with no European trains horses in them) calls that into question.

I’d call him a work in progress, one who might be interesting in a King Edward and one that SMS will no doubt improve as he gets older.

Hope so, SMS already has trained two of Heat Haze’s other horses with not too much luck (Jersey last year was unfortunate with Forge on soft ground and Moore’s love for being boxed in during that meeting)

As for Cracksman; it’s all about what he might do rather than what he has actually done and the value has long since disappeared.

Owner is already making sounds about not going to the Derby. People have pointed out that Gosden can’t be trusted too much with what he says at the moment. But, at least Cracksman is not “a typical Frankel”, neither, it seems Charlton’s Frankel that is now owned by Godolpin

But Thursday is a big day for him and hopefully he will go well. I’d be wary of the Crystal Ocean gamble – didn’t something similar happen with Ulysses a year or two ago? We all like a Stoute Gamble don’t we? He has a lot of improvement to make ( the horse I mean – not Stoute….he is fully exposed)

Beginning to think that if allowed,by daddy, Rekindling for Joseph O’Brien could win the Dante, but, the horses that ran in the Ballysax behind him and subsequently the Derringstown is not encouraging

At this stage the Derby definitely needs a star performer especially if Churchill doesn’t run. The trials so far have been uninspiring but perhaps there is one lurking in the wings ready to jump out on Thursday…..

This all very underwhelming at the moment . Last year, after the Ballsax, I had my money on Harzand after Weld publicly disagreed with Smullen about his chances in the Derby – Smullen thought that he was more a Leger horse (he was, but Derby was always worth a crack)

Right now, Venice Beach has being the most promising ……….for Coolmore. They won’t be dominating everything just yet! Doubt Churchill will run,but yeah, he is the only one out of Coolmore’s worth backing right now

    Sir John Lavery sluiced

Liked Mirage Dancer, Murphy gave him a shocker of a ride tactically but he fairly flew up the straight once he got daylight and was in front of the others 100 yards past the post

100 yards past the post means little. US Army Ranger was passed out Harzand in the Derby after the post and look where he is at now after subsequent races . MD had enough daylight to nab 3rd. Moore had stopped riding once he got on the line.

The performance of MD does remind me of the complete and utter cock up of De Sousa on Across The Stars in the Lingfield trial of 2016 where that horse had the race at his mercy only for the jockey to inexplicably get impeded .

Stoute must have told Oisin to get the near rail (despite other races suggesting that was not a great idea) and the horse was not quick enough to be in the top 4 and was thus held up. MD’s dam did nothing in Europe beyond a mile and that Group 1 in the US who did she beat? Her other two progeny never saw over a mile either and they were not great (and neither have done or are doing much in the US) Radiator and Forge

The facts are that the first crop has already produced 8 individual group winners by the May of their 3yo season.

Mostly achieved at 2, bar Cunco, and NONE of them have looked like they have progressed since. Still a little early to comment on Fair Eva

Brave? Coolmore will clean up until this side of Royal Ascot. (I doubt they have a Derby winner though)

For for future group winners from the first crop? This year? In the UK, Monarch’s Glen has a shot if he calms down or is gelded. Cracksman? There definitely won’t be the Derby! Group race this year? Wouldn’t bank on that in the UK, in France sure. The French scene seems to be ripe for Irish and British horses to raid France this year with the viruses still rampant so perhaps the few unexposed 3 year old Frankels might pick something up at Group 2-3 level . Anyone them with Godolpin will often be allowed to train on at 4 and even 5 if they are showing some form, so they may find some soft group race somewhere around the world.

His two year olds this year will be interesting .

People can make their own opinions as to whether in the next 6 months he has horses capable of adding to that tally – but it would probably be a brave person who said no. A

Good performances at Group 1 level is what we are looking for now.

few people on this thread appear to like research – maybe look at how many group winners other stallions produced in their first crop.

    We already touched on this!

Dubawi produced 9 Individual Group 1 winners from his first Crop, with a total of over 16 Group 1’s between them.4 of them won their Group 1s at 3 years of age (2 in South Africa and ) Granted, some of these horse did not win their Group 1s at 2 or 3 years (irrelevant in the long run), but, still from the First Crop. His First Crop were born in 2007, so ran as 3 year olds in 2010.

The following horses come from Dubawi’s first crop, there might be others that started or went to other countries like Germany, Oz etc, but this this a breakdown to the best of my knowledge as to what these best of the first crop won and when. I know it is the usual puff piece, but according to Darley, the horse is

“The fastest ever to sire 50 Group winners and has more Group winners than any other stallion at the same stage in their careers. Sire of 28 G1 winners so far. 16% Stakes winners and 10% Group winners makes him one of the world’s greatest stallions.”

Darley have a great page for Dubai, it actually lists some of their horses that ran at 2 (2009) and 3 (2010) etc

Dubawi Heights (Half sister to San Remo & Make Believe) won 2 US Group 1s at 4 years (interrupted 3 year old season) Lucky Nine won about 7 Group 1s (5 of them “local” HK Group 1s)

Makfi won the Guineas and Maorios at 3.

Monterosso who won the Dubai World Cup at 5, won the King Edward at 3 years.

Prince Bishop, who also won a Dubai World Cup, had won a Group 2 (beating Cirrus Des Aigles) and 3 in France during his 3 year old campaign

Poet’s Voice won a UK Group 2 at 2 years, and a Group 2 and Group 1 (Queen Elizabeth II) at 3 years

Sand Vixen (Dream Castle’s dam) won a Group 2 at 2 years

Astrophysical Jet Would eventually win two Group 3s when the horse was 4 or 5 years old

Worthadd won two Italian Group 2’s (including the Italian Derby) and an Italian Group 3 at 3 years of age. Placed in the Lockinge the season later, he won another Italian Group 2 and later a German Group 3

Asfare won a listed race at 3 and 4 and finally won a Group 3 and a Group 2 at 6 years of age

Fox Hunt started his 3 year old campaign late. Won the German St Leger at 4 (Group 3) and some Group 3 in Meydan the year later.

There are a few who have more – but only after their first crop had run at 3 and 4.

That is slightly irrelevant in the long term, because the second crop and third crop were already covered and foaled by then the time that the first crop run at 3 years. Dubawi as shown above did pretty well getting 4 individual horses to win Group 1s at 3 years of age from his first crop. (Well, for argument sake, let us just say the two that won in the UK)

Frankel went to stud in 2013. He has already had 3 seasons worth of work before the Spring of 2017 , while charging £125,000. Juddmonte won’t be silly enough to reduce the price for Spring 2018 on account of whatever the first crop does for the rest of the season, after all, he has produced a Group 1 winner. God knows what this year’s 2 year olds will be like, touch wood a bit better, temperamentally. Even the brats that have gone bonkers still look like decent horses if given time (and maybe gelded, maybe) Spring of 2018 might be the test with regard to the quality of mares (preferably proven producers of group horses) and 2019 will be THE year when questions get asked (if he has not produced another Group 1 winner or two – preferably classics)

When it comes to any stallion – be it Frankel or a horse who stands for £5,000 – surely it takes a full two seasons before anyone can claim to judge their progeny.

I would say even 3 crops! But, not everyone is charging £125,000 straight away!

Also – the research fans might like to look into Sea The Stars first book. Would be interested to know how it compared in terms of Gr1 winners/producers – and how Frankel is doing at this point compared to STS in the May of the first crops 3yo season.

Sea The Stars went to stud in 2010. In total, a Sire of 59 Stakes performers (20 Group winners, 14 Listed winners) -First horses born in 2011, first 2 year olds in 2013, and first 3 year olds ran in 2014. Very very very few 2 year olds ran a full campaign. STS was a MASSIVE horse in size and I recall some experts thought that he would be more a National Hunt horse . Has not got the support of the Aga Khan until recently. May now start to get some quality mares. Many three year olds from the first crop and subsequent crops were gelded before they started racing! Anyway, first Crop

Taghrooda – dam was a favourite of mine, Ezima, ran for Jim Bolger. Ezima herself was by Sadler’s Well and Ezima’s dam sire was none other that Darshaan, himself an excellent producer of Group 1 winners. Anyway, Taghrood won the Oaks, and a King George Stakes and should have won the Yorkshire Oaks but for the Jockey, 3rd in Arc

Sea The Moon – Group 2 and 3 German winner and huge margin win in the Germany Derby Group 1. A lot of hype about the Arc by June but got injured in his last race coming 2nd – Jockey on the day got a lot of stick for the ride

Vazira won the French Group 1 that acts as a trial for the French Oaks – nothing flash about the damn!

So by 2-3 that is 4 Group 1s, two of them Classics!

    The others

Mutakayyef – a frustrating horse, still running at 6, a miler horse to 10 f. Gelded in 2015 . His 3 & 4 year campaign consisted of a lot of placings in listed and Group 3’s with Paul Hannigan on board. Finally won a Group 2 in his 5th year and was only 3/4 l 3rd in the Woodbine Mile G1 to Tepin

Astronereus – Amanda Perrett trained :negative: The dam has done nothing on or off the track. Mostly handicap stayers races, the odd listed win. Won a Group 3 at 5 years last year

Stars Over The Sea – Dam did produce a Group 1 winner in the US. Alas, this poor horse never had a chance, trained by Mark Johnson  and later sent over hurdles with David Pipe. Now with Henry De Bromhead. :yahoo:

My Titania – Oxx. Dam, who was a listed winner, did produce a decent sprinter called Muthmir. My Titania was a Group 3 winner at 2 years of age. First race at 2014 was the Coronation Stakes , rather odd.

Afternoon Sunlight Won the Irish 1000 Guineas Trial, Group 3 at 3 . Weld made a right balls of her season thereafter

Casual Smile- Group 3 in the US at 4 years

Zarshana – Group 3 winner in France at 3

An increase in his price, the current price , only occurred after 5 crops !
