He didn’t take any of the three Irish Guineas weekend G1s last year, he will have the hot favourite (Churchill, Winter, Minding) for all three this year.
He had a hit rate of 33% last year, winning one in three contested. It’s likely he will contest more this year, having more top older horses, so he just needs to achieve that hit rate again.
May 22, 2017 at 08:07 #1301798Aiden didn’t have the likes of acapulco and carravagio last year and of course didn’t win any of the derby’s. A lot will depend on the main horses staying injury free. All the signs are that the top ballydoyle horses look like they mean business.
May 22, 2017 at 09:20 #1301803Are any bookies still offering odds on this?

I checked WH last night but get a pop – up saying i am not allowed to partake in Specials in the future, so i dont know if they are or not. Last price i saw was 7’s available
PP were next best if i recall at 6’s, which i can’t see available on the site. Lost Soldier’s firm were going 3’s and have not checked that or any others.
If anyone finds a price could they post it on here please ?
May 22, 2017 at 12:09 #1301814We’ll be going back up at 7/2 today.

I will put a hypothetical 2/9 against him doing it until a price comes out
May 22, 2017 at 14:32 #1301822Minding & Seventh Heaven aside, I am not sure he has enough firepower in the 10F/12F races to make a realistic attempt this season

Looking at it without my Rose Tinted Spectacles on for a moment. Last year i can recall Oaks, Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks, King George, Arc and BC Turf where they won between 10 – 12 F. Probably more, i’m not sure. Possibly it could be a struggle to match that, but i could see Minding winning 2 at least this year.
Interesting you left Highland Reel off the list, for some reason he seems to never of received any recognition for his victories last year. If you excuse his run on very soft ground in Dubai i think he is a top class performer who could still improve further.

Yes, but, he did say “Minding & Seventh Heaven aside,”
Some training feat to get Highland Reel producing the form that he did at 12 furlongs again this season. I would not be backing him in a hurry.
I wish they left him at 12f distance. Granted he ran well at York, I would prefer if he is raced lighter and compete at the 12 furlong races only, no more 10f races , so long as the ground is good. Grand Prix St Cloud might be worth a shot, might not be worth as much dosh but…………winning another Group 1 in another country sounds good for the horse.
I really wish he never ran in Australia at 10f , because it is the ONLY reason for justifying Winx’s lofty position in the world rankings. Her hardcore fans never shut up about it
May 24, 2017 at 08:46 #1301952Not sure if you guys have seen but I read that Seventh Heaven is out injured ubtil Autumn….

Good luck – hope he does it, as watching AOB as a kid is one of the reasons I got into racing.

Hopefully she will make it back for the big Autumn races nice and fresh. Not too many G1 races for these older horses in the first part of the season. Not many stables could have the FAV ruled out and bring in the King George and Breeders Cup winner in as a substitute.
Big weekend coming up

Devastating news. I fear that could be one loss too many regarding Aidan’s record-breaking hopes. Hopefully they can nurse her back for a tilt at the Champion Stakes/Arc, or even save her for a full 5yo season.

He needs a very certain set of conditions (fast ground and an easy lead) to be effective, everybody knows that yet the jockeys in his KG and BC Turf wins still just left him alone to do his own thing. The Turf was the worst of all but what I found incredible was that the US jockey on Flintshire was heavily lambasted for letting him have an easy lead whereas not one word was said against Moore (who knows exactly how HR should be ridden because he did it in the KG) who gave him a 10L-15L headstart.
The Hong Kong Vase last season shows that if he does get pressured for the lead he is vunerable and liable to get picked off and whilst he is a very good horse and will get G1 wins (more likely on his travels) for me he falls short of being top class because he is a bit one dimensional tactically.
May 26, 2017 at 14:31 #1302133Mindings injury is a blow not only to Aiden but to racing in general. With her and seventh heaven out I’m sure we will be saying a few times that they would have won the big races. Minding will probably win a group 1 or 2 in the autumn as the ground will be fine for her but seventh heaven I can only see her winning in the breeders cup.

I think he will always be one of those horses that’s under rated myself. Already people have wrote him off for his run in Dubai this year, which was run on unsuitable conditions. He was on the go in top class races since Dubai last Spring till Hong Kong in December. A very hardy horse he is.
I totally understand your point about how he has won his races, but he can do no more than run faster than his opponents. If it was not for Found he would of won the Arc also.
May 26, 2017 at 16:43 #1302143Nothing against the horse it is just that jockeys should know by now how to ride against him yet they still seem to leave him alone in front in his races, says more about the jockeys than the horse really – you are right about the Dubai run, ironic that you go there because there is pretty much zero chance of the ground being anything else but fast and then they have a torrential rainstorm befoehand turning the ground good to soft.
I don’t know if international horses still get invites but to me the Japan Cup could be an ideal race to target him at as more often than not it is run on very firm ground and travelling is no issue to him and it must be one of the few G1s O’Brien has not won plus the prize money is massive (I think there are also bonuses if you have won certain races in the lead up as well).
