While I think that a seven-year-old who’s never won over three miles being allowed in the National, let alone winning it, takes the proverbial, respect is due to the much unfairly criticised Sam Waley-Cohen. Truly the Britt Baker of the Jumps.

Ian, I don’t think that anyone is debating that Arkle and Flyingbolt were the best chasers of their era, its just the idea that the two of them were so far ahead of everything that has come since.

I suspect Arkle was probably about Kauto/Denman/Dessie in terms of how good he actually was. I also suspect the problem might actually have been that Timeform’s psychedelic sixties tea boy might have significantly overvalued Mill House!

Ah heck, I shoulda mentioned that I was talking about 21st century Champion Vhase records. Nuff respect to Flyingbolt (I do question the accuracy of Timeform’s rating, but he was clearly a legit great) and, while we’re at it, Remittance Man, Viking Flagship and Badsworth Boy.

The MEGABEAST would have annihilatified them beneath his hooves in a bout of prolonged destructification that would leave us in tears, honoured to bask in his glory, but they were top, top horses nevertheless.

(TTC – I’ve heard that Arkle and Flyingbolt were rated by someone who wasn’t that far off being the work experience kid – they weren’t really taking the jumps seriously at the time)

Basically, when all is said and done, she was a horse who did me a favour a couple of years on the bounce at Cheltenham (sorry for the aftertiming) at big prices and I’m glad to see her retire in one piece.

I’m looking forward, if I’m spared, to seeing the likes of Boilover and Mister Tea do their thing around Cheltenham in a few years time.

Precisely, Marlingford. She may not be a “great” but, as a winner of the Champion Chase – A race that hasn’t really had any Rock On Ruby/Lord Windemere “how did that horse win that race?” moments over the past 20 odd years – she is clearly a “very good”.

And, as someone who has recently become Middle-Aged & Crazy, it’s LOVELY to be referred to as young.

    Get in!

I wonder what price she is for Aintree next year?

If there are three tiers of Champion Chase Winners (The MEGABEAST tier, the awesome tier – Master Minded, Sizing Europe, Moscow Flyer, Altior, Azertyuiop, probably Big Zep, Voy Por Ustedes and Energ…this year’s winner – and the rest), then she is in the top half of the third tier. But she is still in that list and she beat some good horses to win her CC.

Ah, Western Warhorse. Currently residing in the “where are they now file?” (and the “where were they then?” file for that matter).

Well Chief didn’t win the Champion Chase. Shishkin didn’t win the Champion Chase. Douvan didn’t win the Champion Chase.
Twist Magic didn’t win the Champion Chase.
Un De Sceaux didn’t win the Champion Chase. Kauto Star didn’t win the Champion Chase.

Put The Kettle On won the Champion Chase.

Put some respect on her name.

My three against the field (ew) are Win My Wings, Major Dundee and El Paso Wood.

I have never backed the winner of the Scottish National.

The Young Master was a little bit of a cliff horse for me – he won that race at Wincanton that he wasn’t eligible to enter and from then I always had him down as one to win a biggie. Turns out his biggie was what used to be the Whitbread but was still always good to watch.

Duc De Genievres is, I fear, an Arkle winner we can file under “Future Pointless Answers”, but he still won the damn thing!

If Wednesday has taught us anything, it’s to have a soft ground specialist in your pocket, just in case.

Lord Du Mesnil stays all day and, should the ground go soft or heavy, he will be worth a shout. If it isn’t, he won’t run.

And, at 100s with NRNB, then I’m happy to take that chance.

Fully backed on Galvin for the National. Had him for the GN last year and will go for him again next year. Stays all day and is a solid, if not spectacular, jumper.

I’ve gone with Constitution Hill in the Arkle. Just a hunch and one which is probably hilariously wrong.

I have a very strong feeling that Constitution Hill is going to go chasing next year. He FEELS like a chaser.

    2023 Arkle/King George combo?

Mighty Potter hasn’t done a lot wrong and, at 12s, looks like the value in a superstacked Supreme.

I suspect I’ll be playing more than one in this!
