To make Friday’s Gold Cup sound like some sort of prize fight between Kauto Star and Denman suggests to me that racing seems to have been dumbed down nearly as much as television !

I accept that Kauto Star has proved himself to be an animal of the highest class (despite my not being a fan), but Denman has won just once in his last five starts and has failed to complete in two of his last three races. Surely, the safe jumping Imperial Commander and Cooldine have every bit as good a chance of unseating Kauto Star than Denman has – and quite possibly a better one.

Friday’s race is a horse race – not a prize fight or a two horse race – and the sooner this ridiculous hype is dispensed with, the better.

    Hmm, some interesting points.

What I’d argue is that any competition between two very highly-rated competitors will generate a lot of hype (I’ve tried to compare it to the Ali-Frazier duel to non-racing fan mates  ), so I’d say there wasn’t anything you could really do about it.

After the last two days, I’ll be hoping that what you said in the second par doesn’t come true, though!

I’ve gone for BB – obviously(!) – but the other horse I think could do well is War Of Attrition. Certainly e/w, without BB and/or place bet.

That said, what little profit I made (from places and e/ws!) on Tuesday was annihilated today. Grr.

    Ouch!

My wallet took a bit of a hit with MM and TM being Not Very Good today. The only small ray of sunshine was the place bet I had on Forpadydeplasterer (does anyone else think his string of seconds is somewhat remarkable?).

I’d always had Big Zeb down as a Beef Or Salmon type – great in Ireland, rubbish over here. Oops.

I like Poquelin, but I do think VPU has a decent EW chance. It seems like connections aren’t entirely sure what trip suits him these days.

For stats fans, his Cheltenham record reads 11222.

    Certainly worth a look, IMHO.

I have to say, I do like the look of Plum Pudding (going for a hattrick) and C&D winner Ibberton in this race. Fingers crossed, everyone!

Out of my ap bets, I’m pleased to have seen Eric’s Charm (who’s only six withdrawals away from being there) and Big Fella Thanks win yesterday.

Not so happy about Possol, though!

I got into racing – as in PROPERLY into racing – last year, when I scooped the Tricast in the Gold Cup.

Watching the Racing Post highlights reel, seeing Exotic Dancer’s last race made my eyes well up – and I can be a pretty cold person.

Thank you, Exotic Dancer. Thank you.

I like the look of Ballyfoy at 8/1 and – just because I love the flimmin’ horse – Eric’s Charm looks extremely tempting at 14/1 (and, yes, both of those are e/w!)

I still like Zaynar, and the other pick (albeit for a BF place) is Khyber Kim.

A bad race does not mean a bad horse, IMHO (and, yes, as a Kauto fan, I apply that to Denman, too!)

Siegemaster and War Of Attrition both owned by Michael O’Leary, eh?

Don’t be surprised if they both declare for the National in the end, but race around Haydock…

    …I’ll get me coat.

For what it’s worth, here’s my shortlist. Bear in mind I might well change my mind before the race!

    Big Fella Thanks
    Possol
    Comply or Die
    Can’t Buy Time

    If he runs, there’s also
    Eric’s Charm

If the trainer changes his mind, there’s also

    War of Attrition.

The King will hold onto his throne.

    Denman will be second.

Only question is – who do I put in my tricast?
