Potential interesting little story to this one on the cards with apprentice Jack Callan pencilled in to ride VTC’s fancy Galeron and his dad Neil down to ride Metal Merchant.
The compressing of the weights is what makes the classier horses come to the fore as much as anything I think. Realistically nothing with a chance gets into the race off less than 10 stone 7 maybe and they have to expose themselves to some degree to get in. This isn’t one of the run of the mill sneak one in at the bottom handicaps. Its basically a limited handicap in effect and the smaller the weight gap from top to bottom, the greater the chance those at the top outclass them. If you run a Grade 2 and Grade 1 horses get penalties, you still back the Grade 1 horses don’t you? This isn’t that dissimilar
Interesting that last years winner Godwinson is entered again, switched yards from Haggas to Channon. The same switch Johan made a few years back and won this race on his first start for the Channons. Same owners.
Checkandchallenge caught my eye in the entries. Hes either never run in a handicap or he hasnt for a long old time. Used to be that the future group class 4 year olds took this but I think the race has changed recently and its been going to older ones.
Almost forgot my favourite bit that didn’t happen in a race with Tom Bellamy’s mum doing her best Cilla Black. Lovely to see the embrace between Tom, his dad and his brother too
I’ve only just got round to watching the final two races from yesterday as I was gutted about Envoi Allen and one of my biggest enjoyments was watching the Foxhunters or whatever they call it now winner given a great ride for connections I’d never heard of before and it was the success of some of the smaller connections I enjoyed a lot this week. Remarkable job done by the Evan Williams yard too in what must have been really difficult circumstances. I’m reluctant to use his name here because hes been convicted of a fairly serious crime but everyone else in the yard deserves all the praise in the world.
Thanks for running again and well done to those on the podium and of course the winner
Thanks for running it. Hopefully next year goes better personally. WD to all in profit and to Grass for that incredible total.
Jesus the person on the BBC live text has had a nightmare.
Jukebox Man, having looked well placed until the penultimate fence, ultimately finished eighth.
A bit Spursy?
This 5 mins after reporting Envoi’s death in the same live text.
I thought it was poor taste even without that context. Harry and the horse shouldn’t be mocked like that.
***** sake. Can’t be arsed with watching the last two races. This game is crap at times. Why couldn’t he have just been allowed to retire prior to Cheltenham. Poor old boy. RIP
FFS Envoi Allen better be okay. That’s ruined the whole week if he’s done that on his last run. Prayers for him right now
Last years winner ran on strongly after the jumping was done and everyone else had cried enough. He looked beat after half a mile when they were all going ok, I thought he might get pulled up. He’s still a shadow of the horse from 12 months ago. Not to detract from the winner too much he was great but I don’t think the 2nd or 3rd would have placed in most renewals of this.
WD winners. WD to his biggest cheerleader in the world Nath. 2nd and 3rd jumped very badly fwiw, suspect he hasn’t had much to beat
The champ is not travelling or jumping in those pieces. New name on the trophy coming
Fascinating race in prospect. No skin in the betting here. Gut feeling at the time of the King George was it might not have been a great race and here we are with them at the front of the betting for the Gold Cup. Couldn’t call this one. Not enough market support behind the defending champ to make me think he’s back to his best.
Apparently the winner was due to run in the Turners but got balloted out. Funny how it works out sometimes
Crap race isnt it. She’d have finished 2nd in the Champion Chase probably
Imperial Cup winner was 4th in that Ascot race too, very hot form. Hot Fuss ran very well in the Fred Winter too last year. Lots to like if he stays the trip ok.
