My main three bets for the meeting ( following extensive study :mail: ) are Drefong , Gun Runner , and my nap of the entire meeting – Bolt Doro , the proverbial flying machine .

Good luck to everyone with their bets .

Gun Runner for me . He will have to step up in order to lower Arrogate’s colours , but he is improving with every run and has looked mightily impressive in his last two races , albeit against lesser talented opposition .

With Arrogate struggling to recapture his form , I fancy Gun Runner to steal a march on the rest and outstay them up the stretch . :good:

I’ll eat my head ( not hat ! ) if Big Orange manages to finish in front of Order Of St. George this time round

I promised myself that if John Gosden and Oppenheimer took the decision to forego the Arc with Cracksman in favour of The Champion Stakes , that unless the ground turned into a bog , I would definitely back the horse at Ascot .

Fresh as a daisy and ready to win : Cracksman :good:

Not the best racecourses in the British Isles but these two are my favourites . Ayr and Hamilton ( beautiful scenery and atmosphere , especially on a warm summer’s evening ) .

My least favourite : Yes , it’ll take a lot to knock Chester off this particular perch . Just don’t like the course full stop .

Sea Bird’s contemptuous disdain for the opposition in the ’65 Derby . Arkle’s electrifying brilliance in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown when conceding 16Ibs to his great rival , Mill House . Foinavon’s Grand National , Nijinsky’s triple crown , Humble Duty’s 1000 Gns win ( still the easiest winner of this race I’ve seen ) Crisp’s brave and heroic effort in ’73 National . Secretariat’s Belmont . Little Owl’s Gold Cup . Burrough Hill Lad’s Gold Cup Arazi’s breeder’cup win ,EL Gran Senor’s Guineas . Frankel’s Queen Anne .

All very memorable and close to my heart , but my overall favourite moment has to be DENMAN beating Kauto Star in the 2008 Gold Cup . Id been talking up the horse’s chance on this very forum for months prior to race , in the face of much derision from the K auto fan club members , like ” Fist ” , former forum member . I even predicted how the race would be run and won by Denman . Having backed the horse with hard cash in numerous bets , with bookies and friends , I was naturally thrilled to bits watching Denman run Kauto Star and the rest of the field ragged in the manner I foretold . The tanks victory paid for the summer holiday and more . A racing memory that will live with me forever . B-)

For Expert Eye , read Gorytus .

Lesson : Ignore Aidan O’Brien at your peril when a Group One race is up for grabs .

She looks very good indeed . Will be very interesting ( and exciting ) should she travel to England next year , and maybe take on Enable , who looks to be staying in training .

Ladbrokes have already priced up a potential match-up for either horse to finish ahead of the other if they race before 2019 .

    They go : Enable 8/13 , Winx 6/5

I backed Roly Poly to win @ 9/2 , in the belief that when push came to shove , Ryan Moore’s strength and determination in the saddle would see his filly prevail .

In the event , I thought Moore rode like the champion he is : but for his brilliant assistance , I’m less convinced that Roly Poly would have got her head in front . For me , one of his best rides of the season thus far .

Well done to those who backed the winner , whose jockey took full advantage of the conditions and Will Buick’s eccentric handling of the favourite .

Johnny Murtagh more or less said that Buick made a complete a*se of it . Hard to disagree with that assertion .

Wise decision to pull Churchill out of the race ; he would have floundered in the mud anyway .

This will be the first time that I bet against Churchill . Usually , I favour the good 3 year old in the Sussex .

However , in the belief that Ribchester is the best miler in Europe and appears to be improving with every race , I have confidently wagered a few shillings on Fahey’s favourite .

As I was the person who started the Sir Peter O’Sullevan sometimes made mistakes debate , it is therefore only right that I should tip the scales a little in his favour .

If you watch and listen to his commentary of the 1975 King George & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes , you will soon appreciate why he was so lauded by fellow professionals and pundits . His whole delivery from start to finish was flawless , as it was exciting .

For what it’s worth , my favourite racing commentator was radio stalwart , Peter Bromley . I loved listening to his commentaries.

And now Chapman getting Royal Gait confused with Bold Gait. These people are meant to be professionals… how do they make such elementary mistakes?

To be fair to Chapman , on this occasion ; even much greater men than him have become tongue-tied at times , and have been prone to getting the names of horses mixed-up . A man who has probably been more guilty of this than most – quite astonishingly – was the peerless grand master of commentating himself , the late , great Sir Peter O’Sullevan .

Having watched and reviewed this year’s Derby quite a few times since its running , I am now totally convinced that the best horse won the race and will take all the beating in this Saturday’s Irish Derby .

Wings Of Eagles came from a long way behind after being bumped and forced to weave his way into a position where he could unleash his challenge . He finished very strongly in a true run race and looked every inch a class mile and a half Group 1 horse .

If anything , he appeared not to have handled the Epsom undulations and camber; yet in the end , he won with authority in spite of that .

Hopefully , there is a good gallop set from the off , and thereby I can only envisage another victory for Wings Of Eagles .

Whilst I don’t particularly like the mob handed approach and sometimes dubious tactics of Aidan O’Brien’s runners in certain big races , I am not against the use of pacemakers . They are often a good thing , especially if a fancied runner requires a true run race and test of stamina .

The use of pacemakers is not new by any means ; Dick Hern used two of them ( Highest and Kinglet ) in the 1975 KG & QE Diamond Stakes as a means of utilising Bustino’s stamina , while trying to negate Grundy’s speed . The plan nearly succeeded in the so called ” race of the century ” In fact , Hern had planned to use three pacemakers in the race , but an injury to Riboson scuppered that plan .

So , do I think they should change the rules for pacemakers . Yes , I do , but limit their use to one pacemaker only .

That would eradicate any nefarious and hindering tactics from the likes of O’Brien’s less fancied , mob handed bully boys .

Low point(s) : 1) poor showing of Churchill
    2) Ryan Moore’s defeat on Order Of St. George

High Point (s) Caravaggio showing why all the hype surrounding him was fully justified . Monster of a sprinter

Personal high point : Having two good bets in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes – backing The Tin Man to win and Tasleet each way . B-)
