Really pleased for Kevin Ryan.does this mean a rod has a squeak on sat. Well soon find out and looking forward to see how the horse gets on in group ones over 10 to 12 f. Great start for master craftsman a much underrated horse Imho.
War envoy to me wasn’t liking the ground hence the reason aob will run him in the Coventry where hopefully he will get better ground. The horse had only won a maiden so no reason to be so odds on. Joseph gave due diligence and table rock super rides later on but as usual that’s not mentioned. Do you really think cool more, with their billion dollar operation wouldn’t hesitate to ease Joseph out of the no 1 position if they felt they had to. Remember the horses weren’t right at the start of the season so expect a flood of winners late June where we will get horses like marvellous improve greatly from their previous run.
Matt chapman is far and away the best racing presenter. He is always interesting and engaging. Boyce’s the next best IMHO . Unfortunately we have a plethora of frankly awful presenters. Can’t have it that nick luck is any good and of the rest of them only graham Cunningham is any good for his knowledge although he only appeals to racing nuts. Gary obrien is fab in his coverage of Irish racing as well.
No pressure on young Joseph on Australia then.
..And three runner races for the supposed championship events. With all our top non-firm/hard ground horses racing abroad instead.
It’s a miracle that racing existed for centuries before watering.
Exactly my thoughts. I can understand trainers taking out horses when the going is brick hard but unless,as Richard Hughes says, we have horses running on good to firm going then gradually we will be left with horses who only go on good or good to soft going. As for stats just from the last few years it seems to me that far more horses are pulled out due to heavy going than firm. You only have to look at the huge number of withdrawals at the guineas meeting in Ireland and the Irish derby meeting when Camelot obviously hated the ground.
I’m no breeding expert but know enough about it to realise that Hughes is talking a lot of sense and coming from a family steeped in racing is making very valid points. The trend for good going know will obviously affect stallions as the likes of war front progeny are much better on good to firm and stallions whose progeny like good or good to soft are likely to be used much more which would be a shame. The international at York last year was one of the races of the season and as declaration of war showed at the breeders cup he was a top class colt on good to firm going. There is no right answer but all the likes of Hughes is saying is that we are damaging the breed and the racecourses so be wary when it comes to watering too much. Simples.Magician is obviously a very good horse but can’t help thinking that like the late st nic wants 12f on good going. I’ve no doubt he will go for the prince of Wales and wouldn’t be surprised to see him just failing running on well at the end. Be brave aiden and go coronation cup, king George ,arc then breeders cup. Probably end up at York and win the international when the going is better. His win in the breeders cup was electric to say the least.
I always think it’s unfair that we just don’t let nature decide what the going is. Watching dayjur blitz the field at york on pretty firm going was fabulous. Last year declaration of war was obviously a much better horse on good to firm ground as he showed at York in the international. Or mr frisks superb performance in the whit bread on firm going. Each horse is different and I agree wholeheartedly with Hughes that it is weakening the breed and depriving us the sight of horses who thrive on good to firm going. All about opinions of course.
I wonder if it is very soft how the front two will cope. Australia looks like he will act on it but not so sure about g Chaucer. Hopefully weather improves nearer the day.
It’s still the most exciting race.when you think of generous, shergar, nashwan,Galileo, high chaparral etc it brings a tingle to my spine. Remember high chaparral beating hawk wing and the rest so far back the camera had to pan backwards. Been at Epsom a few times and teenosos win was my favourite. Maybe the best horse doesn’t always win the race but is definitely the most eagerly awaited race of the year. Maybe history will repeat itself with Australia and g Chaucer one and two. Let’s hope whoever wins goes on to be a top class 3 yo.
Far too many Joseph bashers on here. To me he is riding to instruction most of the time. There could be an issue with his weight but don’t think cool more would keep him on if they thought he wasn’t up to it. Just remember he is still a very young man and many jockeys weren’t able to cope with the demands of being ballydoyle no1. Just ask Jamie spencer.
Coolmore is pretty ruthless when a horse doesn’t do the track or at stud. They usually get it right and the likes of master craftsman, war front and fastnet rock are doing fantastic at stud at the moment. Dom was one of my fav horses and could have been even better but for an injury plagued 3yo career.
Can’t see why people are doubting Australia as his guineas run is far and away the best form. I suppose you could say stamina was a doubt but being out of the parents he has all breeding experts will tell you 12f is his trip. Of the rest Geoffrey Chaucer looks to me to be next best with savers on orchestra and Kingston hill. If the only reason you are opposing Australia is because of what aob said d then remember who knows best in the how to win the derby. I suppose something could improve like workforce did after the Dante but to me Australia is a very worthy fav even if his price is due to a lack of genuine opposition. No doubt we will know better after the race if it is a good derby. Remember grundy and generous finished 4th in the guineas.
The problem with the French form is that both intello and declaration of war were running at shorter distances than they were best at and dawn approach had tailed off by then. Og disappointed a few times but on his day was very good. Verrazano ran a blinder for his first run on grass which makes the Queen Anne looking like a hot race at royal ascot. Tornado must have had training problems to have run so few times so it hard to judge how he will run if he turns up at all.. We won’t find out how good last years 3 yos are till they take on this seasons best later on in the season. The 2000 guineas could turn out to have been a very good one in time so let’s wait and see.
Just shows how difficult it is for trainers to place horses. Mind you as he is by master craftsman whose best run was a course record second to sea the stars over an extended 10 f it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the horse performed well. Certainly looks like a sprinter but it looks like the French derby next where he wouldn’t be without a chance.
All those with 25 and 33sof Geoffrey Chaucer can almost count their money. Can’t see it not being an Irish trained horse winning the derby with fascinating rock and orchestra in the mix. Of the rest only Kingston hill make any appeal ew.
I think with war front offspring it probably depends on the mares bloodline. Declaration of war best two runs were his last two and that was when he was 4. Guerre has come out and won a good race in his first run at 3 and the Great War looks an exceptional 2 yo. It’s too early to tell if war fronts will be just speedy 2yo but I do agree that they need fast ground as we saw with declaration of war he was much better horse on firm ground although he ran a great race in the breeders cup. War front doesn’t fetch 160,000 per foal for nothing. I suspect on this one mr magnier will be a more shrewd just of horse that all the keyboard experts we all are.
I see mustajeeb won easily at the weekend having been trounced by war command last term. Just thought I’d mention it.
