They did both have injury problems, but they were hardly stellar Gold Cup winners.
Kicking King was in the right place at the right time if you look at the horses he faced in his King Georges (beat non-staying Azertyuiop + Kingscliff, then fortunate to nose out Monkerhostin). With Take The Stand, Royal Auclair and co up close in his Gold Cup (devalued even further by Grey Abbey’s late scare), there have probably been better runnings of the William Hill Chase than that race.
War Of Attrition ran to a similar level. Both admirable horses who did their simple tasks well, but they fall some way short of the modern greats.
Kicking king was off the track for over 2 years and achieved a rating of 172(bobs worth is rated 180) and had he not been injured would at least have matched bob worthy rating. He lost the best two years of his career. War of attrition was off the track for 658 days and was on a mark of 174. He too lost the best two years of his career. They were must better than just admirable and as with last instalment weren’t able to show their true potential. I thought war of attrition was a super horse.
I see magician is entered in the Sheema Classic over 12f and ruler of the world in the World Cup over an extended 9 furlongs. I know they are different surfaces but interesting where they are running. Magician is second fav behind gentildonna who of course was well beaten by st Nicholas abbey last year. Fields at Dubai look stronger every year. Looks like being a super Saturday next weekend. Live on art. Can’t wait.
I think ruby is merely showing that jump jockeys know that every time they ride the huge risks to horse and rider and maybe the way he deals with it was shown in his reaction . Britain has a love affair with horses not replicated anywhere else and I can understand this. Our Conor was a gorgeous horse irrelevant of his talent. Btw I wonder if Aiden and Joseph obrien felt the same as ruby when st Nicholas abbey died. Joseph adored the horse as did a huge amount of the racing public. I wouldn’t criticise ruby or any jockey as they, and the horses they ride, put everything on the line for us racing fans. R I P our Conor and all those horses who perish in racing. They are such fragile animals.
We had to endure War Of Attrition and Kicking King as admirable yet mediocre winners, .
Tad Harsh on Kicking King I would suggest. His CV was pretty up to scratch.
Indeed a tad harsh on both horses. Iirc both had injury problems and may have won more big prizes if not for that. Loved war of attrition.
Ruler of the world likely to run in the big race at Medan a week on Saturday so should be a pointer to how obriens horses are doing.
On any normal lines of form that result shouldn’t have happened. As was said before the run of the giant bolster shows it wasn’t as strange as at first glance. It could well be simply that the change in the going transformed a few horses and didn’t suit others. Last instalment was struggling a long way out which suggests that even with the watering it was good ground. Only the jockeys of lw and tgb seemed to realise the way the race was going and ohos jockey realised maybe a little too late that he had a great chance of winning. I’m sure we can’t rely on this form come aintree or punchestown but should it be good at either venue the front three will be there or thereabouts. Connections of cue card must be wandering what if their horse hadn’t been injured. Possibly one of the most exciting races I’ve ever seen and so pleased for Davy Russell. Hopefully gigginstown will now see the error they made and reinstate him at least until Bryan cooper is back.
With many of the favourite horses getting nasty draws it could easily end up being a ballydoyle battle up front with leading light setting sail for home early and ruler of the world behind him.The race looks set up for a so called outsider to win.Its not always the best horse who wins the arc so my two are leading light and ocavango. The soft going will find a lot out and coolmore know this hence the reason they are confident in being in the first five and getting their supplement fee back.
