RIP Dessie
I was only 6 when Dessie won the Gold Cup so have no memories of him running but heard his name plenty of times. His lasting legacy for me will be appearing on the front pages of several national papers in my local newsagent this morning. Just watched his Gold Cup win now, fantastic, never looks like getting up after the 2nd last!
I just wonder whether Detroit City will be the Desert Orchid of my era…..
Didn’t read said article but…
Paul, is your ‘Greatest Racecourses’ book worth £99? I’m considering buying it, but it’s a bit steep (well, pretty much vertical). I could blag entry to most of them for that!
I hope your signature dosen’t cost £98….
Minimum Tote dividends:
Win £1.02
Place £1.02
In theory the dividend can be less than £1, e.g. if all money in the pool is on one horse, after the Tote takes its cut (13% on win bets??) the money left in the pool (i.e. on one horse) is less than it was to begin with.
Rarely see the minimum win payout but the minimum place dividend is more common although the only race that stands out is a maiden won by Safsoof (1/10f) at Southwell in 2004!
In one of Deep Impact’s races the Japanese Tote paid out a 1 yen dividend, such was the support for the horse.
He’s in semi-retirement already, ‘riding no-hopers around Listowel.’
In order to gauge fallers due to class of horse, could stats be compiled of the fate of the favourite in chases at all courses?
Of course such labour is beneath me…
Prefer The RyanAir Fondmort Chase myself.
More likely to rename a race at another meeting if it were to happen, chances of renaming a Festival race for him are precisely 0.01%.
I only like Argentinian horses.
Top performance.
There have been 7 dual winners at the Breeders’ Cup.
Oh my God!
I’ve read 10 pages of a thread on ‘The Racing Forum’ and I can’t remember a discussion about any horse!
I don’t buy the RP for a 200 word article, I doubt many of us do, so why the fuss?
Surely we come on here for what we believe to be weighty debates? I don’t read the RP for them, I for one learn more about the sport’s current affairs here than the RP can ever tell me.
Jackane, as upset as you are the milk has been split, and you probably had a far better day at the Arc than anyone here. Get over the article.
Zorro can call me a b*stard in the RP everyday of the week if perchance I meet D. Wayne Lukas at the Breeders Cup!
Oh my God! What a superb weekend, just got back from gaye Paris. All paid for courtesy of Fabre, Pasquier and FSL.
Pleased to say I got a fair wedge on at 23.6/1 on the pmu, but FSL it was here that I first heard of Rail Link.
Thnak you.
Cheers for the information everyone, no excuse for not being equipped with the Post now.
I wonder whether the Sportsman will be as widely available….
The Opera is shaping up to be a classic and the Abbaye is always a fine race to watch  Bit disappointed that Teofilo won’t be taking his chance in old Jean-Luc’s race but you can’t have everything.
Flying out tomorrow night, can’t wait.
This debate puzzles me somewhat.
It seems that people are not endeared to the saturation of poor quality racing around now, but people on here seem (in the majority at least) to favour high-grade racing as a betting medium.
If you didn’t like poor quality racing 5 years ago chances are you would not have bothered watching it. If there is more of it around now and if it’s not impacting on the top grade stuff (and the big days are not diminishing) why should you be less interested in the game? After all the likes of George Washington, Ouija Board, etc. are not getting fewer opportunities to race are they?
I never used to look at the mediocre midweek cards anyway so it doesn’t concern me that there are more of them as they are not the basis of my interest in the sport.
The plethora of poor quality racing makes me look forward to weeks like the one we’ve just had all the more.
Well the treble goes down at the first hurdle!
Thought Heart had it 2f out but Hurricane proved, to me at least, that he is the best turf horse in the world.
Still, Araafa and Dandy Man should save face.
Will probably go for Shirocco in the Arc now, I think Fabre aimed Hurricane at the KG knowing that he has another horse to win the Arc with and I for one will follow his judgement.
Had 2nd, 3rd and 4th favs in first race, out already!
Quadpot!
Just come back from Hoylake having taken 2.16 on Woods at 11am, fantastic day.
My views regarding the treble have been reinforced by news of Heart’s Cry’s and Araafa’s gallops. Really looking forward to this saturday, one of the 3 best races in the flat calendar imo.
Not just the draw Reet, Dandy Man has been improving all season whereas Takeover Target has little improvement left at his age (I know sprinters can improve as they get older but if you look at the Group 1 sprints here over the last 10 years there have been few 6yo+ winners, but Les Arcs isn’t helping!). This allied to the draw would make Dandy v. difficult to oppose in my opinion.
At 5f the best horses in UK & Ireland are Dandy Man, followed by Benbaun. Opposed Benbaun at Sandown because it is all uphill there and doesn’t favour true 5f horses.
I wouldn’t mind having a bit of that forecast.
As for the King George, I would lay Electrocutionist all day as don’t think he’s a 12f Group 1 horse. He won an Italian Group 3 over the trip but didn’t look to have stayed at Woodbine over 12f in a Group 1. Looks like a match between Hurricane and Heart’s Cry (assuming Dylan doesn’t run + he’d have a better chance in the Irish Champion imo) and the difference in price is not a true reflection of their chances.
Araafa has ticks in all the right boxes, I don’t know where to start opposing this one. If someone could let me know why they think he’ll get beaten I’d appreciate it (providing he runs to form), always good to hear things from a different angle.
I have settled on the treble as I can’t have anything in Arc until I know who the best French 3yo is and at this stage I don’t know.
Sincerest condolences.
This thread is a fine tribute to the man, never met him but he clearly enriched the lives of many.
