Indeed!

Alas, my companions have decided that the trip was more in my interest than theirs and felt it more prudent to visit a location more amenable to the groups’ collective interest! De Niro’s just has to wait.

However, I will, in the interests of the forum, make it my job to analyse thoroughbred fillies on South Beach… and report back in due course!

After much deliberation my proposed trip to Newmarket has been replaced by a trip to Miami (although Newcastle and Goodwood were considered)!

If anyone has been to a racetrack in the south Florida area your opinions would be welcomed.

They are/were all good race callers otherwise they wouldn’t be in the job for long. Their own particular styles are not going to be everyone’s taste but hey, as long as they are accurate (this really is crucial) then its fine by me.

Lee Mac – many people have been criticising commentators for using their own phrases, cliches, etc. How much of this is a bit of fun for the commentator, say when calling a 16f handicap on the AW in the middle of December?

I’d need to amuse myself somehow having to call that dross, especially at Kempton… if a racecourse commentator is calling a race but no-one’s there to hear it does he/she make a sound?

In fact this is my commentary on said race.

    ‘They’re off….

…the first time Sir Mark Prescott handicapper ‘Needs Further’ wins under a patient Seb Sanders ride, number 7 ‘Belgian Breakfast’ is second, the third horse home will finish long after I’ve left for the evening so I suggest you check tomorrow’s Post.

    Good night.’

Do you think the powers that be at Newmarket would do something similar Adrian?

Well we’re unlikely to spend more than 6 hours a night in the hotel to be honest so the idea is to keep costs down on the accommodation front.

Especially since there’s no guarantee we’ll leave the track with wallets intact

Well I’ve checked a fair few of the places mentioned on here and only ‘The White Hart’ can accommodate the days we plan to visit.

I notice it is conspicuous by it’s absence from Adrian’s list… Anyone stayed here and recommend it?

This thread beats David Ashforth’s ‘Racecourse Tour’ and The Times’ ‘Course Inspector’ !

Amazing how the same place evokes such contrasting opinion! I suppose it’s what you want from a course.

I have to say that viewing is not something that bothered me at the Rowley Mile. At most courses I’ll watch the screen while the field are down the back straight so I only tend to watch the ‘live’ action when they swing into the straight so seeing just the final 2f at Newmarket isn’t a problem, in fact anything in the world is better than Longchamp’s sprint track :o

I think CliveX sums up the RM well, it does feel like the centre of the racing world.

I’ve been reliably informed by my mate in Cambridge that I have actually been to De Niros. He lived in Cambridge for 4 years and went out in Newmarket once, with me apparently, and didn’t go back! My mind does not recollect this experience.

To be honest I think familiarity may breed contempt. I live near Chester/Aintree/Haydock and don’t think too much of any of them. When you go on a weekend away to a distant racecourse it always seems to be better becasue it’s something new and you’re effectively on holiday !
I’ve whittled the list down to York Ebor, Galway Festival (thurs-sat), Northumberland Plate or the July Meeting. Goodwood is a bit of a mission from the Wirral and maybe one to take the Mrs to in due course.

Underscore, I’ve never been to Scotland and imagine you don’t work for their tourist board

Thanks for the information everyone, not sure if I’m going to go now!! Positivity reigns!

    Interesting points:

The lack of excitement in the town is a problem! I’ve been to the Rowley Mile (2005 1000 Guineas) but didn’t spend any time time in the town as we stayed in Cambridge. Thought the facilities in the Millennium Stand were as good as anywhere I’ve visited (excluding York), does the July Course have such a structure?

I was advised that the July Course was a must! Is the July Course patronised by a similar crowd to Chester? (i.e. socialites, racing takes a back seat) Crowds wouldn’t be too much of an issue, I prefer racecourses to be busy and have atmosphere as I’m not really a paddock watcher and will bet on the phone most of the time, does the course have a busy betting ring?

Off topic slightly but the way UK courses restrict access for the average racegoer is shameful. The tracks here should take a leaf out of Longchamp’s (or indeed Chantilly’s) book, free access to most of the course and even though they have restricted areas you don’t feel like you’re missing out at all.
Ideally I’m looking for a few days at a racecourse (not necessarily UK) to mix in racing with a few good nights out. The bigger courses I’ve not visited are Goodwood, redeveloped Ascot and anywhere in Scotland and would ideally like to go somewhere new.

However, York is my favourite course so the Ebor is always an option.
