The best Aintree horse never to win a National in my lifetime. He will go down as one of my National favourites, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Although I think it was the right timing by connections, he just didn’t look himself this season.
Well, in that case, surely the right time to retire him was last year… ;)
Hope you got on Viva at 33s empty!
What a superb ride from big Mick.
Call me naive if you will but could this gamble have ocurred due to the horse’s ownership (Patrick Veitch and co.)?
Rather like Tony Bloom in football markets, if a gamble is thought to concern one of the big players then chalk moves often occur. In horse racing the market moves on certain trainers’ horses (Stewart Williams for instance) do not reflect the actual money traded on them.
Could this be an instance where a gamble was being orchestrated by well known pro punters, the price was cut excessively (due to connections) and then totally unexpectedly the horse wasn’t fit to run for reasons already highlighted?
The gamble could well continue even after the horse’s pre-race antics as those people off-course who are in on the gamble have no knowledge of the horse’s behaviour, they are lumping on expectantly…
Just trying to balance the argument, and no I’m not Mr. Done/Hill/Chandler etc!
Doesn’t make it right to cut it past the 20p Rule 4 mark but if the gamble takes it in the region of 4/1 then surely as a business you’d think let’s push it over the threshold.

Cheers for the info.
Reckon Saint-Cloud is the better bet, May 1st is my birthday – surely the racing Gods will smile on me for one day  Apparently it has a 4.5f sprint track, interesting…
The Gr.2 looks pretty strong, Manduro, Stormy River, etc. (possible Lockinge entries??). I knew the Gr.3 was a trial for something, who are the main protagonists for the Diane?
As an aside why are the French/German Oaks named after this Diane?
As for the handicaps does anyone have a system for them? Such as throwing out top weights at certain distances, etc? I’m not looking for in-depth analyses, just any trends that can be applied to French racing!
I’ll remember not to back the short-price favs on the PMU, last time I did that I seem to recall opposing a 1.40 shot and backing a 23.60 rag, quite a big race I seem to recall…

Call me cynical if you will, but he’s out.
Richard Hoiles commentated on one of the races yesterday I think, decent commentator indeed. The Cat continues to improve too.
Is Simon Holt contracted to only commentate for Ch. 4?
Lamentably no, however in 2008….
Didn’t see any replays but did Well Chief bounce after he fell?
Will this thread make Channel 4s top 100 comedy moments this saturday?
I hope so.
Can’t wait for the 3yo races, just think we’ll see next year’s Triumph winner at some point over the next 7 months!
Snowy Morning:cool:
6 year olds don’t win the Champion Chase.
Rules out VPU.
Three runner race, Well Chief would beat Newmill on any ground, but Nickname?
What has he achieved in winning all these heavy ground, small field races?
The major difference between festival races and races pretty much anywhere else is that on the whole they run at a very fast pace. This is why the heavy ground plodders get taken off their feet early and never really land a blow.
Only Well Chief in this race. If he doesn’t bounce he wins.
How about:
Aran Concerto
Denman
Black Jack Ketchum
Kauto Star
Couldn’t have any of them winning and have laid multiples on betfair accordingly!
The Chelts & Aintree guides are very good. The NH season is pretty good but the Summer Festivals less so.
One reason is that I do not think that there as many strong trends in flat races as jumps races on average.
Wouldn’t bother with the emailed tips though, once armed with the information you should be able to select yourself….
Haydock is the course I have frequented the most for some reason even though it’s not a particular favourite of mine.
I’d get the train to Newton-le-Willows too, leave via the main exit and walk down the hill passing the Leigh Arms to your left. There is a bus stop directly opposite you, the racecourse shuttle does stop here, you shouldn’t have to wait long (can I be anymore specific  )
I recommend you walk into the town though, the Pied Bull is a decent pub, food’s alright too, so worth slipping in there and then catching the bus at the stop over the road. (Incidentally, opposite the pub is a tanning salon called Newtan-le-Willows, which let’s be honest is a cracking name.)
Once at the course would definitely recommend Club. Haydock has gone out of it’s way to attract ‘coach trip parties’, especially during evening fixtures, and Tatts is made up of insalubrious types.
Facilites around the course are good, easy access to parade ring, betting ring and the viewing in general is pretty good.
The Bay Horse that has been mentioned is usually not open around race times, i.e. 1 hour before first race until 2 hours after the last race. This is because a few years ago they had problems with inebriated racegoers making a nuisance of themselves and wrecking the place.
The pub is still open to residents (it’s a b&b too) and people the owners know. If you phone them and ask to be allowed in they will let you in round the back!!
Haven’t been for over a year though so maybe this has changed.
If you’re going out afterwards, get on a train to Liverpool or Manchester, Newton isn’t great.

Adrian, I’m only doing it to test your knowledge! You’ve passed this test, but what if I changed my mind to say Papua New Guinea
Calder is the favourite then, as planning on going for a few weeks in Oct/Nov, hopefully to coincide with the Cincinatti Bengals (my chosen NFL team) v Dolphins game.
Gulfstream would be the preferred choice, do you know when they start racing again? That simultaneous dirt/turf race is one to watch, have to catch it on ATR. Reckon Tampa would be a bit too far to go so by default Calder is the selection.
Never been to an American course, or indeed America, do they have different enclosures, pre-parade, parade rings, etc.?
