This debate puzzles me somewhat.
It seems that people are not endeared to the saturation of poor quality racing around now, but people on here seem (in the majority at least) to favour high-grade racing as a betting medium.
If you didn’t like poor quality racing 5 years ago chances are you would not have bothered watching it. If there is more of it around now and if it’s not impacting on the top grade stuff (and the big days are not diminishing) why should you be less interested in the game? After all the likes of George Washington, Ouija Board, etc. are not getting fewer opportunities to race are they?
I never used to look at the mediocre midweek cards anyway so it doesn’t concern me that there are more of them as they are not the basis of my interest in the sport.
The plethora of poor quality racing makes me look forward to weeks like the one we’ve just had all the more.
You dont have to watch Championship football if you like the Premiership
i think its the fear of missing something that bothers people, but simply by specialising a bit, thats easy enough to get round?
If the horses are there to run and the courses can justify their meetings, then whats the problem?
at the top level my one gripe is that the season seems to be increasingly geared to the BC and like cheltenham, i think thats a mixed blessing
August 26, 2006 at 12:15 #75867On The BC front our horses are so slow away in shorter races they cant compete!
You mean one race, the Breeders Cup sprint.
August 27, 2006 at 14:17 #75868It’s the endless surfeit of instantly forgettable low grade dross that is so wearing. This will of course be getting worse with the evening AW fixtures to come.
7 meetings yesterday including at Sandown and Windsor which are about 30 minutes apart. Both courses had Group races and although I went to Sandown I couldn’t get too worked up about either card.
I actually used to like Sandown amongst the London "park" courses but found the cranes on the Metropolitan skyline and airport terminal type stand depressing yesterday. The place could also do with a lick of paint and the constant blab on the PA gave me a headache.
I agree with the poster (DB) who feels that trying to keep up with all the form and news is too time consuming and that I should be doing other things.
There is certain to be self selection in national newspapers with one or more cards per day likely to be dropped due to pressure of space and consigned to the specialist press or internet like dog cards.
It can’t live without it and is getting squeezed by bets on other sports, but to my mind racing has sold its soul to please the betting industry.
