National hunt horse racing is my favourite sport and I do not think it is cruel because I strongly believe that horses enjoy running and jumping and get well looked after in this country. The Grand National is nothing more than a glorified handicap really and we do not need it as it gives the sport more bad publicity than it does any good.
I think there is a limit regarding what horses can be asked to do and The National exceeds that limit as it is too difficult. It should be finished or changed to about 3 1/2 miles with fairer fences and have a lot less runners.
I was very disappointed to hear Paul Nicholls say that the ‘ anti national ‘ brigade should grow up and that there are risks in all sports including soccer. A very defensive and naive comment from a respected trainer who should know better.
Ladbrokes are still on the Readabet comparison site…..do not know why they have left Oddschecker and would have to think that they will lose business because of it.
A P McCoy
is the most talented and greatest jockey ever as explained in the following quote from the stylish but less gifted Ruby Walsh –
"What he does on horses is immense. I ride completely differently to AP McCoy because you simply couldn’t ride like him. He’s a unique and brilliant talent."
When you calculate your 7/4 winnings do you divide by four then multiply by seven then add one or do you just multiply by 2.75?
Uhm…when I calculate my winnings on a 7/4 chance then I multiply it by 1.75…..why add the one

£10 at 1.75 = £17.50 winnings. £27.50 is my return.
As for the change to decimal odds then I am all for it as we have to move with the times even though I agree that racing has more important things to worry about
Unless the Kempton Park All-Weather Course has altered since outset then details are as follows –
The key features of Kempton Park’s unique floodlit layout are:
~ a right handed track with a bend radius of 137m
~ a 20m wide home straight and bends of 16m width
~ a track designed to accommodate 17 runners in all distances (other than 5f and 6f races)~ the outer track is a ten-furlong (2,000m) oval and will host 6f, 7f, 1m, 1m 3f, 1m 4f and 2m races
~ the inner track is an eight furlong (1,612m) oval which allows for 5f and 1m 2f races
~ 42 floodlights illuminate the track
~ 28 of the poles have the ability to be laid flat so that the view of spectators is not hamperedWhat Henry did was instinctive. He saw the ball late, stuck out his arm, the ball hit his wrist, there was a second touch with the hand and then he crossed for Gallas.
All this happened in a split-second and his actions probably didn’t register until after the incident and euphoria of the moment.
Players concede penalties week in, week out after ‘deliberate’ handball. Are they cheats? No. Sometimes it is an instinctive reaction that is not intended to deceieve.
What would Henry achieve by approaching the referee and telling him the truth? Only a complete moron would expect the referee to change his mind. Good intentions, or not, THE OFFICIALS SHOULD NOT BE INFLUENCED BY A PLAYER ON THE FIELD OF PLAY.

Bosranic – you have not got a clue. Henry deliberately handled the ball and to say that it was instinctive is utter rubbish. He has issued a statement saying he handballed it. He cheated on this occasion ( I am not saying he is a cheat usually ) and if you are so thick that you cannot understand this then that’s your problem and not mine.
Soccer players ( and a lot of the game’s supporters ) have a reputation for being stupid as shown by Neville with his reaction to trying to stop the ball going in the goal ( which is a totally different scenario to the one that Henry experienced ).
It is easier to cheat at soccer than many other sports – how can you cheat at tennis, golf, cricket etc – it is difficult and may explain why the general public respect the professionals in these sports more than they respect football players.
In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the notion that a referee should be able to change his mind in certain circumstances when a soccer player approaches him to explain an unjust decision……snooker players and golfers immediately tell the officials when they have broken the rules even when they have not done it deliberately and they are praised for doing so. Soccer can learn from the sporting attitude shown in other sports – we just need to change the mindset that presently exists in soccer which makes it ridiculed by a lot of the public.
There is this attitude amongst some people in soccer ( as shown on this thread and by the statements from some players ) that it is acceptable to cheat as long as the referee does not notice it and I wish we could get rid of this. Video technology ( including post match punishment for diving ) is needed if we are going to stop the cheating from becoming worse.
Unbelievable!!!….It seems that some people on here do not understand the english language. One of the dictionary definitions of the word cheat is –
To violate rules or regulations
Deliberate handball by players ( apart from the goalkeeper ) is against the rules of the game of soccer so Henry cheated
Another dictionary definition of cheat is –
To behave in a dishonest way in order to get what you want.
Henry deliberately handled the ball ( forget this nonsense about it being instinctive – he is not a goalkeeper ) which is against the rules of the game so he was being dishonest and is therefore a cheat.
Henry cheated and just because some other soccer players also cheat does not make it right.
Even if Henry told the officials what he did the result would, and should, not have changed.
Regardless of the honest intent, an official should never be influenced by a player on the field of play.
This was one of those moments where little could have been done to alter the outcome. I remember when Phil Neville was sent off for a blatant handball for Everton – a save that any Goal Keeper would have been proud of. It was an instinctive reaction and no doubt he got back to the changing rooms he thought to himself ‘What the f*** did I just do?’
Henry was in a great position and instinctively controlled it with his arm. From the moment it hit his left arm to the moment he crossed it, there was little time for him to react to what he did. It was all done in one fluid motion and over in a second. Nonsense to suggest he should have stopped playing at that particular moment.
I’m not one to criticize officials, but in normal time, from as many angles as you like, you could see he handled the ball. It’s easy to say the officials get things wrong with the benefit of slow motion replays, but on this occasion they did themselves no favours.
The only thing Henry could have done is come out and apologize, but to my knowledge, he hasn’t and that’s very poor.
Officials get no help from cheating players, but the officials on Wednesday deserve to be criticized for THAT goal and should be punished.
Henry is not a cheat. My team, Bristol City were labelled cheats after the infamous ‘goal that never was’ against Crystal Palace. What utter nonsense!
Of course Henry is a cheat and only a complete idiot would say he is not. He deliberately handled the ball which is against the rules of the game and his team scored a goal because of it – how is this not cheating!!
His reaction to handle the ball was not instinctive – otherwise this type of situation would happen regularly in soccer every week. It was deliberate – look at the replays!!
Also the referee could have changed his mind if Henry had been honest straight away – it is ridiculous to say that a referee cannot be influenced by the good intentions of a footballer.
Let’s stop blaming the officials – I am sick of it. You cannot blame the referee each time a player cheats and he does not see the incident. I am fed up with so called tv pundits taking a few mins to look at replays of an incident at different angles and then blaming the referee for not giving the correct decision. The referee only has a few seconds from a ground view situation to make up his mind.
Catch and punish the cheats by using video technology – it is the only way because the cheats and divers are presently getting unpunished for their actions…..they need to be stopped somehow or they will continue doing it and it is turning me off soccer ( apart from the gambling part of it ).
The only surprising thing about this news is that it has taken so long for the recommendation that the Derby should be ditched from the ‘ crown jewels ‘ and I have never understood why a sport such as horse racing should have two events in it.
The Derby may be important to us because we are enthusiasts of the sport but many members of the public take little interest in flat racing nowadays ( ask a lot of people ‘ what did you think of Sea the Stars ‘ and the majority will think it is a celebrity tv programme which they have missed ).
The Derby was very popular a few decades ago when there were only 3 tv channels and there was no internet or computer games etc to occupy people’s thoughts but now there are so many other things for people to take an interest in and not too many are going to care about a race which only lasts about 3 mins and has competitors that few have heard of ( unlike the Grand National where familiar names take part regularly ).
The Ashes and soccer internationals are of much more national interest in my opinion.
I don’t see how Paul’s post is spot on or relevant to the title of this thread
So what if some brits produced their own little british community in The Dordogne. Why the surprise
Brits have done this in california and India and other areas of the world in the same way that many other immigrants do when they settle in another country. Is there anything really wrong in this?China actually realised that this often happens and built special areas in their large cities which were copies of british and american style city homes etc so that the brits and americans would feel at home when they moved there following the ‘ westernisation of China ‘
The USA is full of city areas which are replicas of other countries and immigrants partly do this due to fears of racist attacks ( safety in numbers etc ). However many brits settle in other countries and respect the culture and laws of their adopted nation and I disagree that Brits are amongst the worse at integrating when in other lands…….the Irish are much worse ( only joking
).Is integration by the immigrants in this country the real issue ? I do not believe it is. I think that a lot of this countries immigrants have mixed well.
It’s the growing population partly caused by the immigration policy of this Govt and the problems that it is causing which has caused a lot of resentment. Unfortunately some of this resentment has been targeted at the immigrants which is very unfair.A decade ago, I knew nobody who was against immigration and recognised the benefits it produced and thought that it made this country a more interesting place to live in.
Now I know many people who are very concerned about immigration and the blame lies totally with our useless Govt who have caused this problem which is making the country a worse place to live in.
The fact that the New Labour immigration policy was kept from the public only makes things worse and will cause more resentment. New labour have made racism a big problem in the UK when it previously was not one before they came into power.
The BBC were right to allow the BNP leader on to Question time but I agree with Wallace and Friggo that it turned out to be nothing more than a witch hunt.
There was no debate and the BNP haters got their way but in the long term it may backfire and be of benefit to the BNP.QT should be a prog which discusses recent relevant issues but it was nothing like it last night and just turned out to be all about having a go at the BNP. Also Dimbleby is useless and should remain neutral in these discussions but always shows bias.
Let’s get one thing straight – the increase in racist problems in the UK over the last few years is due solely to the shambolic immigration actions of our Govt and this is the only reason that the BNP have gained in popularity and managed to obtain over 1 million votes in the Euro elections
……this would have been unthinkable a decade ago.Our awful govt has got blood on it’s hands over Iraq and also over the racist issues it has created in this country.
I will never vote for the BNP and hate it’s racist stance but the Govt have helped it grow due to their useless uncontrolled immigration actions.
October 14, 2009 at 14:27 in reply to: Anton du Berk (sic),Bruce Forsyth & the troublemaking Press #253306The BBC sacked Carol Thatcher for refering to somebody as a gollywog so it seems hypocritical of them not to dismiss this person who has called somebody a Paki…..presumably because they think it will effect this show and their ratings.
My own view is neither be considered for dismissal and this country is becoming even more racist due to the problems and publicity it causes.
Obviously a reasonable amount of UK punters win on Betfair or is this headline just a play on words regarding the premium charge and the recent changes to it.
Hopefully this article will appear on the internet sometime in the future.
Many thanks to
Matron
and
Zarkava
for their advices about using Firefox and if I get problems again then I may try it.
However this site is now running to speed for my PC as I type this message ( same speed as the old forum was ).
I still think the ‘ most active members ‘ part is not needed ( does anybody care ? ) but if it is to be included then maybe the stats for the last 6 months should be used instead of from outset as it looks a bit daft with guys like JIM JTS inlcluded as he rarely posts on here anymore.
It’s not as slow as when I first logged on here after the change over but it’s still a lot slower than all the other sites I go on and even facebook is fast compared to this site

Somebody mentions using firefox instead of IE but my friend has it and it is not user friendly on some web sites so if I switched then I may go on this site faster but have problems elsewhere – can’t win.
I agree that all the subjects such as hot forum topics, recent forum topics and most active members are a waste especialy the latter.
PS – It’s taken me 15 mins to log on and post this message and I do not have this time to spare each day.
The bad news for everybody is that I can log in without any problems so you will still have to put up with me

I’ll get used to the larger space than normal on the right hand side but
1. The site is running very slow compared to the old one – the old one was about 5 times faster.
2. When posting a reply as I am doing now, I have noticed that the previous comments by other users are all mixed up when I look at them.
Hopefully these problems will be solved in time.
I have onlly ever read Palmer in relation to golf which I bet on seriously every week and Palmer is well known on golf forums to be lazy and he will regularly get his facts wrong when writing his articles in the RP when he gives his tips.
He will come up with the occasional decent winner on the golf but he is not that good over the long term with his golf betting ( same comment applies to his RP colleague Chapman ) and there are a lot better judges around.
I do not like his style of journalism but he did win a writer’s award earlier this year so some people rate him.
I think his article is self indulgent, irresponsible and rubbish.
