I have argued for years that when i bet a horse, its the horse i"m betting not the jockey, not once has a jockey booking put me off my selection! As far as i"m concerned if he"s a paid Professional with several years experience then he should know whats required. Both Noel Feihly and Daryl Jacob have proved that recently. However give me Richard Dunwoody on Remittance Man, Adrian Maguire on Viking flagship, AP McCoy on Edredon Bleu,Norman Williamson on Direct Route, Ruby on Master Minded, and Declan Murphy on Deep Sensation jumping the last in the Champion chase anyday! Paul Townend on Golden Silver oneday soon!

The comparison bewteen Ruby and AP is similar to Francome and Jonjo. One a better horseman, great at setting a horse to a fence, the other more driven, and stronger in a finish. All greats in their own way. Add Dunwoody in there.

Overall id say AP is certainly the best ive seen. He is better on hurdlers than chasers though IMHO. Francome was great on novice chasers too

A.P. McCoy, Ruby Walsh, Johnny Francome, Richard Dunwoody, Terry Biddlecombe, Adrian Maguire, Stan Mellor, J. (was it Jeff or Johnny?) King – used to ride for Bob Turnell), Barry Brogan, Johnjo O’Neill, etc.
It’s been a privilege to watch so many great horesemen. If I had to name just one, I’d go for Dunwoody.

As thehorsesmouth picked up on. There is a huge differemce between talent and achievement and application, and the opening poster rather moves the goalposts with the question in the title different to what the question in the OP is. Mc Coy has undoubtedly achieved the most, and that probably makes him the greatest. Most driven and most successful yes, but most talented, probably not, and something he’s well aware of judging by an intersted interview he gave to Paul Haywood in the Observer at the weekend.

    A P McCoy

is the most talented and greatest jockey ever as explained in the following quote from the stylish but less gifted Ruby Walsh –

"What he does on horses is immense. I ride completely differently to AP McCoy because you simply couldn’t ride like him. He’s a unique and brilliant talent."

Fair point, if Ruby says it, it must be true.

The quote was edited what Ruby actually said was

What he does on horses is immense. I ride completely differently to AP McCoy because you simply couldn’t ride like him. He’s a unique and brilliant talent but so am I and the TRF says I’m better

That would be AP McCoy 15 times to answer your Question exactly and before that unless they have moved Belfast it would be Richard Dunwoody.

I know you are on the other side of the world Fist, but Belfast is in Northern Ireland, not "Ireland".

Northern Ireland is part of the U.K.

I’d hazard a guess if AP was asked if he’s Irish or British he’d answer Irish.

Northern Ireland and the Republic are together when it comes to Rugby, Hurling, Football and Horse-racing + Point-to-points

    Who cares?

An English jockey would only go over to Ireland if not good enough in Britain. Unless in wartime.

    That may be so.
But it was not the question I asked THM.
