Buick to replace Fortune as Gosden’s stable jockey
Jimmy Fortune and John Gosden
Fortune began to regularly team up with Gosden in 2005Jockey Jimmy Fortune has lost his job as stable jockey to Derby-winning trainer John Gosden.
Fortune, 37, rode several high-profile winners for the Newmarket handler, including Lucarno in the 2007 St Leger.
“Mr Gosden phoned me, we had a little chat and it’s been decided that I won’t be riding for him this year,” Fortune told the Guardian newspaper.
Former champion apprentice William Buick, 21, is set to take over from Fortune as Gosden’s first jockey.
Since joining as Gosden’s number one rider, Fortune enjoyed plenty of success.
But after riding Raven’s Pass to victory in the 2008 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, he was replaced by Frankie Dettori at the Breeders’ Cup meeting.
Dettori also rode Gosden’s horses at last year’s Breeders’ Cup meeting, including Juvenile Turf winner Pounced.
“I didn’t have a retainer and there has been no falling out, but John felt that since the situation with the jockeys at the Breeders’ Cup had arisen, there had been a bit of a wedge driven between us,” said Fortune.
“Of course I am extremely disappointed. It has been a good job and we have had five or six very successful years together but I feel as I am leaving on a high.
“Greater jockeys than me have lost their jobs before – Kieren Fallon and Mick Kinane have both experienced the same sort of thing and both of them didn’t look back afterwards.
“I’m only 37 years old, I feel good physically and, as they say, as one door closes another opens.”
Buick and has been based with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere.
He is currently in Dubai but his father Walter, a former multiple champion jockey in Norway, said his son would take the top job.
“I’ve always thought a big job was coming his way but I never thought it would be this year,” said Buick senior.
“It’s fantastic, a huge thing for him. When I was riding abroad he was always with me from early on. He knew the racing game before he was 12 years of age.
“He’s such an ambassador that he made sure Andrew Balding was the first person to know.
“He didn’t want Andrew to read it in any newspaper article because he owes the Baldings an awful lot.
“He’s put that right and Andrew was very pleased on his behalf.
And the run of Gladiatorus again has us wondering what goes on in Dubai
And also what’s going on in Ajtebi’s head

The ‘Budapest Bullet,’ Overdose, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after connections finally had to admit defeat in their bid to get him fit for the backend of the year.
Fans of Hungary’s greatest racehorse will have to wait until 2010 after plans to launch another assault on the Prix de l’Abbaye were aborted,
Owner Zoltan Mikoczy has also admitted that he was less than impressed with the treatment his horse received when in a rehabilitation centre in Nantes: "He returned from France in a worse condition than when he arrived," claimed the owner.
"We sent him there for a rest and rehabilitation, but they wanted to work him.
"It was a case of one step forward, three steps back. I think they thought we were simple eastern Europeans, the way they tried to deal with us.
"Overdose will not be ready to run in the Prix de l’Abbaye but in any case even if he were fully recovered I don’t think we would want to take him to France again after the bad experiences we have had there."
Overdose ‘won’ last year’s original running of the Prix de l’Abbaye, but the race was declared void due to a non-opening stall and the re-run of the race, in which Overdose did not compete. The race was eventually won by the wayward Marchand D’Or.
Mikoczy said that Overdose was recovering well in Britain, at the stables of Amanda Perrett in Pulborough, Sussex, where he is likely to stay until the end of October.
"He will soon be having an orthopaedic shoe fitted to his front leg," said the owner. "The main thing he needs is rest and he is being very well looked after in England.
"When he is fully recovered, I hope that in 2010 we can follow the same programme that we would have followed this year, including trips to race in England."
May 3, 2009 at 22:50 in reply to: How much has everyone won/lost on Rainbow View today please? #225426Did anyone apart from trendsman actually back or think Rainbow View would win today?
Or has everyone gone for a ly down.

I backed her last year at 5/1, coming out of my comfort zone, I had a fiver on her(I don’t muck about) a couple of days before the off, I start thinking what would a top class punter do? so I had a pound E/W on Ghanaati, Heart Shaped, Lahaleeb and Cuis Ghaire, so I ended up with a profit of £18(best odds) unfortunately I lost a few quid on Hatton last night(should have backed the horse) Oh well

Rainbow View 1000 WinRainbow shines despite drift
1 hour ago
Ante-post 1000 Guineas favourite Rainbow View is reported to have come through a workout this morning in fine form despite taking a walk in the market on the betting exchanges.
John Gosden’s charge has been all the rage for the fillies’ Classic since her unbeaten juvenile campaign but drifted markedly on Betfair this morning while sponsors Stan James have suspended betting.
However, Gosden’s racing secretary Peter Shoemark is surprised by the drift considering her pleasing workout on the Al Bahathri gallop and said: "She is fine and worked very well this morning so we don’t know where it has come from."

Gun scare as Lewes horse racing rivals fall out
6:00pm Saturday 18th April 2009
By Ben Parsons, Crime Reporter »A row between horse racing stables led to a gun scare.
Sussex trainers Jim and Tom Best were among five people arrested when police raided Grandstand Stables in Lewes yesterday morning.
It is understood the arrests followed a row between the Bests and a man from the neighbouring training yard run by Suzy Smith.
Police were told threats had been made and a firearm had been seen.
About 15 police officers in seven cars visited Grandstand Stables yesterday at 7.10am. They spent six hours searching the yard for a gun but did not find one.
Jim Best, his brothers Tom and Leon, their father, also called Leon, and another man were arrested on suspicion of making threats.
They were still being questioned last night.
Grandstand Stables are next to Miss Smith’s County Stables at the old Lewes Racecourse site, off Nevill Road.
The Bests have 32 horses in training and despite being a young training partnership have come to some national attention, employing illustrious jockeys Tony McCoy and Frankie Dettori for some bigrace rides.
Miss Smith has 21 horses stabled in converted Tote betting booths in one of the old course buildings.
Insiders at the Old Racecourse said the relationship between the two operations has been strained for some time but boiled over this week.
Jim Best is said to have been involved in a row with a man from the Smith team at Cheltenham racecourse on Thursday, where both yards had runners. The incident was reported to course security.
The British Horseracing Authority said yesterday: “We are monitoring the situation and awaiting the outcome of the police inquiry.”
Jim Best’s wife, Suzy, said yesterday: “It is a bit of a fiasco really. It was a waste of police time. We have never had a gun.”
Miss Smith’s partner, Sergio Gordon-Watson, said: “We have been told by police not to say anything.
“We are just trying to carry on with our work, do the job and train racehorses.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “We received a call at 7.10am from a member of the public asking for officers to attend a neighbour dispute at a property in Lewes.
“Officers subsequently arrested five men. Four of the men were arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and one man was arrested on suspicion of making racially aggravated threats.
“Following information that there was possibly a firearm involved, a thorough search of the area was undertaken, with nothing of any significance being found.”
US Ranger, I get the shakes just typing the name, so near on many occasions but yet so far

US Ranger can be summed up in one word.
Squiggle.
Mark
Your quite right Mark, unfortunately for me and I’m sure many others, the squiggle was preceded by a few quid going down the drain
but that’s the name of the game, and as my old dad said "if you have a bet and lose, take it on the chin"
Bet365 do them all, I should know they’ve taken enough money off me
and before anyone says it I know they are mugs bet’s, but I just can’t help myself
I backed it as well
the bit I liked, was were he looked to his right but not to his left in the home straight
Sean Boyce was very critical of the SP on ATR, said he couldn’t see how it could go off so short in a race like that, maybe Lord Donoughue will look into the matter

Well done cleandries, I didn’t back it, but anyone who gets a 66/1 shot deserves a pat on the back

Gayanula drifted like a barge but ran well, I think it bodes well for Benedict Spirit in the 3.10 Great Leighs.
For those that don’t know(or remember), Carv gave us the winner last year in this race, Barker

Went in at a nice 7/1 at Southwell today, stopped me from pulling my hair out over not backing Pawan

Wish I listened to you sberry, backed Pawan many times last year, decided with the start of the new year I’d give up on it, look what happens, it was out of the handicap and Anne was overweight(in jockey terms
) and it runs a cracker
