To be honest, I was very nearly persuaded to have a large bet (small by most standards perhaps) by a racing presenter (un-named, to protect his modesty) who was super-confident about Rainbow, so much so that he gave a blow by blow account as to how she would cruise into the lead and win going away with Jimmy Fortune waving goodbye to his colleagues.
Fortunately, the fact that he said that he, himself, had not had a bet in the race tended to err me on the side of caution. I just wonder how many people were taken in by his exuberance and lost heavily?
On reflection, in order to cover their backs, I think presenters, no matter how sure they are in their belief, should always throw in just a slight hesitation in case any naieve viewers throw caution to the wind and lose heavily. Not everyone is as astute as we imagine and presenters have, to a small degree, a duty of care in their broadcasting roles.

The problem I find with them Ken is theyare there to sell racing/their programme. I was listening to Racing Uk after the 2000 Guineas and you would have thought they were talking about Sea Bird II. Seems like everything that wins is a superstar. Today they were talking about that filly who won the maiden and saying she would be going straight to the Queen Mary……probably end up in a Hamilton seller  She might well and up winning a decent race but to talk QueenMary’s after winning a race against what turned out to be a 2 horse race against a very green challenger is nonsense. I would say most of the time it’s just them trying to keep the programme exciting.

Yes Bulwark. When I was toying with the idea of "Correcting" Dosage, Giant’s Causeway was one of the new Chefs de Race that I created, so I’m aware of how good he is as a stallion.

Thanks for the useful tip about the upping in class of his mares. That angle could in different years be applied to some other sires as well I suspect.

I was as confident Rainbow view wouldn"t win the 1000gns, as i was confident Mastercraftsman would win the 2000gns. I laid her at Evs, so am
happy with the result! Rainbows 2yo form was always good enough to put her in the Group 1 league at 3 but i think Fantasia and Proportional will prove the better fillies!

Ghanaati’s Granddam is Height Of Fashion, who is the most successful British broodmare of the past 20-30 years.

Many wonderfully bred turn out to be absolutely useless. It is very easy to suggest that we should have taken notice of her breeding but according to the Racing Post this was her seventh foal and none of the previous offspring had shown anything like this level of ability.

It is always worth remember though just how good Giants Causeway is as a sire though. His 2005 crop were awesome, you could almost set your watch by them putting in good runs, but his crops have gradually dwindled away in class over the years since then (through the popularity of Rock Of Gibraltar, Montjeu, Galileo etc). Shamardal was out of what was regarded to be a low class mare in helsinki and think he was bought for about 30,000 gns or so into the Mark Johnson yard, where he turned out to be a complete a monster. Any mare who is on the Mr Prospector line can potentially be a decent dam.

Since 2005 Galileo and Montjeu have seemed to take the spotlight off Giants Causeway a great deal, but in 2005 I was making more off Giants Causeway bankers than anything (in all sorts of grade), and had my best ever year of betting from doing so.

I have been shouting about his comeback for some time now, and he has struck back with a dewhurst winner and a 1,000 guineas winner from this crop, next years will be better, and he will re-adjust the balance with Galileo and Montjeu… watch this space…

Nothing, I’m confining myself to betting in handicaps.

Okay Bulwark, I’ve had a quick look at Giant’s Causeway progeny on Pedigree Query, and sorted them by year. There are loads of the buggers for 2007, which I found surprising, because I thought quite a lot would still be unnamed.

I couldn’t capture the list to post it here, but here are some of the highlights. Unfortunately, I don’t know who is training them.

    Colts

    Eightfold Path, Divine Proportions, Kingmambo
    Emperor Claudius, Virginia Waters, Kingmambo
Global Force, Debit Account, Mr Prospector
    HMS Victory, Imagine, Sadler’s Wells
Impest, North Of Neptune, Mr Prospector
    Polyphemus, Aqaarid, Nashwan

    Fillies

    Jean Jeannie, Moon Dazzle, Kingmambo
    Nehalennia, Airwave, Air Express
    Toll, Yell, AP Indy

    http://www.pedigreequery.com/index.php? … Horses&cf=

I picked some out because of the Dam, and some because of the Damsire.

I might be wrong about Toll. The name Yell sounded familiar to me, but maybe I’m mixing her up with another Yell, as she is Yell3

aThe divine proportions one will almost certainly stay with the Niarchos Family and think they use a few trainers.

Emperor Claudius is pretty certain to be an AOB runner as is HMS Victory.

Think Coolmore bought Airwave too, so that could be in the AOB or Wachman stable.

Intersting that 2 of the best fillies of 2005 were sent to him aswell.

Did anyone apart from trendsman actually back or think Rainbow View would win today?

Or has everyone gone for a ly down.

I backed her last year at 5/1, coming out of my comfort zone, I had a fiver on her(I don’t muck about) a couple of days before the off, I start thinking what would a top class punter do? so I had a pound E/W on Ghanaati, Heart Shaped, Lahaleeb and Cuis Ghaire, so I ended up with a profit of £18(best odds) unfortunately I lost a few quid on Hatton last night(should have backed the horse) Oh well

Not really being a flat fan, I watched the coverage today on Channel 4.

I watched with interest the interview with John Gosden about Rainbow View and IMO he was intimating that the horse was not fully wound up for todays race, which I found quite increible as it was the 1000 Guineas

Having watched the race I think I was right. He did say it was a long season for the horse if all went well. It will be interesting what he sayes now.

I think it will bounce back and prove herself a lot better than the ones taht finished in front of her today.

A post mortem has been carried out along the same lines on the 1,000 Guneas thread in the Big Races area.

It’s a pitty Gosden didn’t tell people this when she drifted to 8s, and he said there was nothing wrong with her and couldn’t understand the drift.

Had the winner @16/1 last leg of an ill fated lucky 15 Nr 1st leg, So just double odds. doubled my outlay, so no complaints. Very impressed with the winner, only backed it because i couldn’t work out why it was in the race. Seen too many "wonder" horses to back short ones.
