    Pacquiao-Hatton fight on May 2, 2009, a done deal – Arum
    spacer

    By NICK GIONGCO

It isn’t signed, sealed and delivered yet, but all signs point to a May 2 clash in Las Vegas between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton of England.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s done,” Top Rank head Bob Arum told the Manila Bulletin yesterday, moments after the Hall of Fame promoter met with Pacquiao, lawyer Franklin Gacal and chief trainer Freddie Roach over dinner in Los Angeles.

Arum said either the Thomas and Mack Center, which seats 19,000, or the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which can accommodate more than 15,000, will play host to the 12-round bout at super lightweight/junior welterweight (140 lbs).

Arum personally went to Tinseltown to discuss the matter with the 30year-old Filipino poundfor-pound king to ensure that he knows where Team Pacquiao stands.

“I have been talking with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) about this fight and it’s just about done,” said Arum, who has come back from a weeklong vacation in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.

GBP, which is owned by Oscar De La Hoya and whose operations is handled by Richard Schaefer, has promotional rights over the rugged Hatton, whose devil-may-care attitude on top of the ring is said to be custom-made for Pacquiao.

“Ninety percent (done),” Gacal said, stressing that everyone on the team wants the fight to happen.

Gacal said a deal should be finalized as soon as he has been given the authority by Pacquiao to work out some of the minor concerns.

It could not be determined yet what will be the revenue-sharing scheme for the Hatton fight although it is safe to say that Pacquiao will get the bigger piece of the pie since he currently dominates the world of boxing.

Pacquiao settled for the smaller piece of the pie when he agreed to battle De La Hoya early this month since it was the Golden Boy – and not himself – who was the main attraction then.

But things are a whole lot different now and Team Pacquiao is very much aware of Pacquiao’s full earning potentials.

Pacquiao should be back in the country on Jan. 10 after his wife, Jinkee, gives birth to their fourth child on New Year’s Day.

But it will not take long before Pacquiao heads back to Los Angeles to begin training camp as he will have to be there by the last week of February for a three-city press tour to promote the Hatton fight.

“New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles (will be the stops),” said Gacal.

After the whirlwind promotional tour, Pacquiao will show up at the Wild Card Boxing Club for training camp proper.

Looks like it’s going to happen :D

Australia is coming to get you guys.

Maybe they should have concentrated on South Africa :D anyway after the way England preformed in India, a series they should have drawn at least, hopefully they have a good tour of the windies, then bring it on

Not blowing my own trumpet, but on the Lays and Plays thread I did warn against backing odds-on shots on Mondays. Including Alfasoun (fell). I hope I saved someone a few bob. Statistically, more odds-on losers occur on Mondays when the wind is blowing from an Easterly direction. There’s an old Chinese saying, ‘The horse that gallops into the breeze will often be the first to sneeze.’

Is that a wind up or straight Ken? I’ve got a feeling I’m going to look a right doughnut for asking that

Dave Nevison has got a new book coming out called ‘No Easy Money: A Gamblers Diary’. I’m always wary of people bringing out a book so soon after there last one, but I did enjoy that, so I’ll probably give it a go along with Mick Fitzs.

Charles Sale in his column in the Daily Mail yesterday. Made the point that the amateur jockey that Matt made his comments about is a solicitor, hence the quick legal action.

Great post Bosranic, for me you have hit the nail on the head, there was an article by Charles Sale in the Daily Mail today

"It is not a good time for TV betting experts who add color to bland horse-racing coverage. Channel 4 have marginalised John McCririck, the BBC haven’t renewed Angus Loughrans contract and ATR have suspended Matt Chapman following a row over his comments about a beaten jockey."

Imo there should be space for all types of commentators.

Jesse Owens for me too, for him to achieve what he did in Germany in 1936(four gold medals) and coming from the background he did in the states, just to get on the US Olympic team was an amazing feat.

Another very high head carriage for US Ranger – he just could not settle again and was exposed very quickly this time. I’m convinced he is a sprinter and being trained into one, but his effort is being absorbed by his attitude to racing. It’s disappointing.

You hit the nail on the head MDeering, I’ve backed US Ranger since it’s run at York in May, hoping every time that O’Brien could get the horse sorted out, after yesterday that’s it for me, saying that I see he’s got an entry at Newbury on the 16/8 in the group 2 Cga Hungerford stakes, if he runs maybe one last chance

No ,but the Swedish threshold is lower than that in UK.
Swedes very puritanical over alcohol and drink driving etc which is why their youngsters go on the lash to Denmark at weekends.
    Doubt Sir Mark is impressed!

If I remember correctly Darryll Holland failed an alcohol test in Sweden in the late nineties, I don’t think it takes a lot to fail one in Sweden.

With Colly going at the same time as Vaughan, its all lined up for Pietersen, big mistake imo, the man’s a great player but you get the feeling that they are taking a chance on him getting the responsibility of captain, as being a reason to curb his own excesses in his game. If he wanted it Cook would be my idea of captain, head screwed on and in the team on his own merits.

At least Steve Mellish on RUK told it like it was following the race.

Your right Black Sam, and it wasn’t just Manning he criticized, he also said that Moore and Durcan rode shockers, hard to disagree.
