The horse was East Tycoon in the 500 Hunter Chase. Left his hind legs in the water and broke his back by the look of it, the horse just went down like his back had snapped.
Horrible injury, I liked East Tycoon too. I was always interested in watching the horse fulfill all that promise he showed earlier in his career. Somehow, he never really did.
    Commiserations to connections.

This is the exact reason I put the word ‘better’ in inverted commas. It was a rhetorical question.
I just think it undervalues the Gold Cup form, where Denman beat a two time KG winner and Gold Cup winner by 7 lengths, in fact one of the best horses we have seen, by saying the beating of an ordinary CC winner (however easily) is the superior form. Just my opinion.
However, I know that the two horses can’t really be compared. MM has beat nothing really, Denman won a Hennessy running away off of top weight, and a Gold Cup. How can you compare them? Denman has obviously achieved the far superior black type.

    A shocker wasn’t it! lol
No excuse at all for that. Ridiculous.

My opinion is that MM showed the potential to be a 186 horse in a couple of years. But to rate the horse so highly on the basis of just this one run is way past daft.
Winning distance doesn’t equate to rating. A hard held Harchibald would achieve a higher rating than horses routing opposition that plainly didn’t get home. They were strung out like washing this year, on ground that was no less than tacky. MM went in the ground. That doesn’t make him better than Moscow Flyer who came back time and time again and easily beat class acts on level terms. MM hasn’t beaten the likes of Azerty or Well Chief turning handstands. He’s beaten distinctly average horses. VPU isn’t great by any stretch of the imagination.
Either we are over-rating the 2milers, or under-rating the 3milers.

I’m gonna hypothesise here. Would we say that NC is a better/worse horse than Monet’s Garden? I rate them about the same, Monet’s maybe a couple of lbs superior. On that line thru Monet’s, NC is overated by about 8lbs in my opinion. NC has run a cracker, but would never manage to win elsewhere off of 178. Denman taking it from the front clouds the form somewhat.

If Kauto ran to form Neptunes improved 2 stones. Hardly likely.

Had Denman not been in the race, Kauto would have beaten NC by considerably more than a sh hd. I agree that NC is well and truely flattered by the form, in that he would be at least 12lbs inferior to KS in my book.
Jumping errors cost Kauto many lengths.

Denman won well, but in a race that ran like a 28f+ event rather than the 26f it is supposed to be and with the ‘dual KG winner’ running below form. Nothing close to a 190 performance on that basis, and I’d fancy a distinct reversal on better ground.

I’m surprised you say that KS didn’t run his race. I think he ran his race but never jumped fluently as he was always stretched to pull Denman back. He was not allowed to run his race. Who’s to say that wouldn’t always be the case when they meet? Denman is a grinder, KS is the proverbial hold up horse.

Plenty more big money handicaps coming up next year. After a few dissapointing runs during the ‘summer break’, (he might even get turned over at tens on again!) and everyone writing the horse off as having "gone downhill", he’ll pop in at decent odds next winter when the prize money is right.
If he had won this, he’d have never got in another handicap again on a right mark. I’m just surprised that i’m the only person who sees it.
Nothing wrong with it of course, Pipe is just ‘playing the game’. Just like lots of other stables. But make no mistake, it is (IMHO of course) a game that is being played.
If i’m wrong, then i’m wrong. But at least I have the gaul to hold my position on it, not to mention forecast the defeat, in no uncertain terms, back in January. Why do you think the horse was entered in the unwinnable race of the two, as opposed to the Ryanair? TB couldn’t have beaten Master Minded in the most optimistic of dreams.

Is that the only word you know dj? Care to tell me what excuse you have that would explain Tamerinbleu being tailed off behind those horses that he gave a right royal stuffing to at Cheltenham and Ascot previously? Remember? Those tasty little big money handicaps?
I take it that you didn’t lay Tamerinbleu? I personally layed the ass off the horse, as I knew it would still be running after nightfall. 7/2 was a lot lower than I expected him to be, well chuffed :)

What makes me laugh is that Thommo gets more votes than Cattermole. What are these voters like heh? Thommo is repulsive as a commentator, to the point that I won’t watch races where he commentates. Cattermole is actually not too bad.

I use a gmail account because they give 3gb storage. My paid for one only gives 50mb
Nothing wrong with gmail in my books, and it’s great as a deposit bank for the spammers.

I’m with the aussie POV also. My needlecraft is coming on quite well nowadays, and I have recently finished a rather nice woolie jumper with a big rabbit on the front. Trouble is that the arms are twice the length they should be
I ‘gave up’ gambling when I realised that racing has nothing to do with picking the best horse and everything to do with who the triers are on the day.
I only ever punt on races with a value of £50k or more nowadays, which is usually the day that 95% of the field are trying. The playing surface, I find, is slightly less in need of a spirit level on those days.
I wouldn’t say that racing is crooked. I would say that it does have elements of crookedness, as does any sport where the insider can make lots of money for no effort. Money talks louder than form.

I stopped buying it when it highlighted Nicky Henderson’s poor record, right before Trabolgan duely slooshing in.
But I agree that it is an interesting read if you don’t take it too literally.
