I have never heard of the phrase, and in this day of PC gone mad I certainly would have more sense to say it in public (let alone on the airwaves) had I heard of it.
I can’t see any excuse for it. Even a savant would know and recognise the offensiveness of the comment. I can’t believe that it just ‘slipped out’. I’d have to say that someone who uses/has used the phrase enough that it would just accidentally slip out simply chooses to use it. Nobody would accidentally use such a phrase IMO. Most would know better. None would feel comfortable with it by default. No excuses from me. If he cannot choose his words more competantly than that, then he has no right to be airing his views in the public domain. Sometimes one cockup is all it takes, if that cockup is big enough.

I wouldn’t say it’s a waste of time following Tom. But it is a waste of time expecting the bookies to have the quoted price up for anyone other than their most intrepid early morning customers. Joe Bloggs has to drink the dregs. I wouldn’t even bother personally, there has to be more play in finding something to beat the selection.

I’ve been critical of his ability in the past, but I can’t use that today. The horse didn’t run his race, and the jocks sympathetic last 110 yds seemed to reflect that. I’m sure that Cockney Rebel will have another win in the tank later in the year. I’d like to see him in the Eclipse personally. I think the 10f will be up his alley.

The horse pulled like a train. GW has so much talent, but has a wild head to go with it. I still dunno how the books managed to get him in at odds on?? Now THAT is buying money 😉

Let me use an example to clarify my point.

Joe Bloggs trawls through the formbook, seven days a week, and earns £2000 a year on average. He has had a couple of losing years but does OK overall. He considers himself a pro-punter and puts his long term success down to pure skill. He one day hopes to increase his winnings to equal a viable wage.

Bob Soap, on the other hand, spends just as much time studying the formbook and does pretty much the same as Joe. His Betfair account is currently in the neg to the amount of £4000. He just cannot figure out why he is losing as he is doing all the right things. He never seems to win. He considers himself "just one of those unlucky guys".

Edna Bucket puts on her £1 scoop 6 bet every week religously. She places 50p e/w on every Grand National and Derby. She has no clue what the Cheltenham Gold Cup is, merely that it is run at Cheltenham. One week, her scoop 6 bet comes up and she wins £112,782.51 for her £1 bet. Her bonus bet also wins the following week at 11/1. She picked it because she liked the name and the jockey had nice colours. She picks up another £42,765.19. She continues to do her scoop 6 bet every week, but never aspires to be that lucky again. Her £150k win is enough to retire on, and by far outweighs her lifetime losses on the horses, which is probably no more than £1000 in all.

Did luck or skill win the day in these examples?
Joe did it systematically and barely earns enough for his annual holiday in Malaga for his sweat and tears. Bob is on the verge of giving up the game as he simply cannot make it pay. Edna doesn’t really care, as it is just a bit of fun to her. I think luck has a part to play and skill can pay rewards also. The luck path to gambling is probably the most satisfying IMO.

ps. i’m sure that my Lucky 15 will come up one week, you just wait and see

Would any comment on such matters not merely be considered ‘hearsay’ and ‘opinion’? I don’t see how it could be construed as factual in any way, no matter what was said on here. As such it would be irrelevant to any preceedings IMO.
A lot of garbage is posted on the net regarding lots of subjects. GWB, as an example, is supposedly a direct decendant of neolithic man and the illigitimate love child of Seabiscuit and a little known hack from Tacoma. That is just a wild opinion though, surely, no matter how bizarre the accusation. In a court of law, such an opinion should have no bearing on the case. That’s my opinion for what it’s worth, but I understand Cormack’s wish to swerve anything potentially damaging to the forum.

I don’t think anyone could write off Red Evie neither. It ain’t no walk over, and i’d take on GW everytime. Who knows how tempramental the horse will be as a FTO 4yo?

He was being held up, waiting for his run. Jock kicked on and bang … gone. Looked to hit a bad patch of ground to me, although I may be wrong.
Things can change so quickly in racing can’t they?
RIP

Thanks Richard. I’d always wondered that myself as I hate that tiny inset picture. I’d have paid for that info. You should have put it on eBay LOL

Interesting that they rate Authorized as 3lbs superior to Sinndar. Wonders never cease.

On what we know right now, Authorized would be the only choice to win such a theoretical contest. That is my logical brain talking. That’s only based on the fact that we don’t know nothing about the 3yo Teofilo and whether he will stay 12f. We will also never know whether he would have handled Epsom on the first Sat in June.
I try to evaluate using what I know, and I know that Authorized won the Derby convincingly. Whether Teofilo would have given him a race is a moot point really. It would have been nice to see Teofilo in the race though.

Given enough incentive oddswise on any matchup, i’d go for Teofilo speculatively. Only as a value punt though. The reason I say that is that you will now be lucky to get better than 4/6 about Authorized now, in any race other than the Arc. Teofilo would be worth a punt at the right price.

To also put my opinion to bed on this subject, I have no doubt that whatever rating you give to yesterday’s perfomance it has to have a ‘+’ after it.
I wouldn’t rate yesterday’s performance on it’s own as a 130 performance. That’s garbage.
I’d rate it as a 124+ (+ representing it’s possible future figure). High Chaparral beat some top class opposition in his Derby. We also know in hindsight that HC was well worth that 130 rating. I say that Authorized beat nothing of note, but beat them very well. If HC was worth 130 in hindsight, then Authorized cannot possibly equal that, in foresight, by beating what he beat yesterday.

Quote: from aphardy on 10:15 pm on June 2, 2007[br]Just so that I can get this in before he takes on his elders – what has he actually beat? By all accounts beforehand, Aqaleem was a poor horse who’d won a poor trial, none of O’Brien’s 8 were any good – Archipenko was 2nd favourite and he was beaten by the rag Leander!

No, this form is useless. As Derby form always is.

(By the way I have hit the sarcasm font for this post)
I never said that the form was useless. I merely said that cutting thru a bog standard Derby field like butter doesn’t make the horse a superstar … yet. It could be claimed that Eagle Mountain is the better horse as he was catching the winner in the final furlong, but merely left it too late. Anyone remember Oratorio? Finished last in the Derby and proved to be the best of his year at 10 – 12f.
The Derby doesn’t mean jack in the grand scheme of things, as it isn’t half the race it used to be. Motivator, that ‘superstar’ that stuffed Oratorio in the Derby, and never won another race, springs to mind.
Beating your own generation is easy if the competition is weak, and you like Epsom. Lots of horses don’t like Epsom. Let’s see him do that to any decent 4yo on a flat track, and i’ll change my opinion. I think the 127 quoted earlier is probably a few lbs too high. 124 is about right at the moment.
