Just been a most distressing fatality at Ludlow’s water jump in the Hunter Chase – why don’t ALL racecourses remove them???
March 20, 2008 at 17:31 #152869Just been a man knocked down on the road near here. Why don’t we do away with cars?
March 20, 2008 at 17:31 #152870flippant and nasty – well done
March 20, 2008 at 17:39 #152876The horse was East Tycoon in the 500 Hunter Chase. Left his hind legs in the water and broke his back by the look of it, the horse just went down like his back had snapped.
Horrible injury, I liked East Tycoon too. I was always interested in watching the horse fulfill all that promise he showed earlier in his career. Somehow, he never really did.
Commiserations to connections.March 20, 2008 at 17:40 #152878Water jumps should be removed. If anyone needs to be convinced the accident today was an example of what can happen.
Are there any water jumps in Ireland?
March 20, 2008 at 17:46 #152882No. We’ve got more sense.
March 20, 2008 at 17:56 #152888We should remove fences also and hurdles, horses are known to die over these also, oh and who could forget the whip, that has to go too.

March 20, 2008 at 18:02 #152893Did either of the above 2 posters actually see what happened today??
March 20, 2008 at 18:04 #152894No. But you did explain it to us, did you not? Many horse fatalities occur over a number of different obstacles, do you think we should remove these?

March 20, 2008 at 18:05 #152896I think the issue is that water jumps are not fair.
Horses are not aware of what they are being asked to jump until they are virtually at the fence, and relatively minor mistakes or ‘short’ jumps can result in serious/fatal injuries.
As I recall, there have been studies of the safety of water jumps which showed that they are more dangerous than other types of fence, and as a result most have been removed.
I think their removal can be considered in the interest of the sport (let’s face it, they don’t even make good spectacles) without being opposed simply out of principal or fear of kow-towing to the so-called ‘cotton-wool brigade’…
March 20, 2008 at 18:07 #152898NV,
Not trying to difficult here, but do you have any statistics that back up your assertions?

March 20, 2008 at 18:09 #152899Water jumps are different – they were modified because of horses dragging their legs and suffering badly – some racecourses removed them.
March 20, 2008 at 18:09 #152901JjD,
Not here – as I say this was my recollection of what made courses remove their jumps in the first place. I may be wrong, of course…
I’m sure that someone here might know and/or have access to the earlier report(s)/rationale, however?

Do agree with the modification, however it really annoy me to hear people give out about horse safety when there are so many dangers to horses when running in NH. Its the sport we follow, and we should have to accept these dangers come with the sport.

March 20, 2008 at 18:15 #152909That was horrible.

RIP East Tycoon.
March 20, 2008 at 18:18 #152914Horrible incident. Nearly all fatalities at such obstacles seem to me to come about in similar fashion to todays. I can’t see what a water jump offers as a spectacle to racegoers either so I’d have no objection to them being banned.
