A note to add to the meeting summary.

Regal Setting, pulled up in 3.05 was noted as suffering ‘an irregular heartbeat’ after an outing earlier this year. I wonder if the ailment might have occurred again?

Have to admit that I missed the paddock for the handicap chase as my wife and I had paused for a coffee.

In theory Another Promise has a year or two to his prime as a chaser so will be interesting to watch his progress.

I agree with you  about Hugo De Grez. He’s not the fastest animal, but he does put it all in, and with sound health and a real stamina test I get the feeling he’ll be staying on when most have said "enough!".

Thankfully I was able drive to the course. We now live in Dunfermline, about 90 minutes drive from Kelso. nice drive in good weather, but my wife says it can be tough in bad weather.  My locals are Perth and Musselburgh with Hamilton an hour’s drive away. My ‘previous life’ in southern England meant that I’ve ticked off most courses in that area. Hope to visit the likes of Hexham, Carlisle and Newcastle before too long.

Two games sum up a lot of the problems with the Scottish Premier League.

    1. Aberdeen v Celtic – where the home side had 1 shot on target and basically were playing for a 0-0 draw. Celtic won 1-0.

    2. Dunfermline v Rangers in the CIS Cup. Dunfermline had an isolated front runner and just seemed to be ‘hoping something might happen’. Result 0-2.

Since moving to Scotland I’ve watched a couple of Div3 and a lot of Scottish Junior games (that’s non-league for the uninitiated) and it’s been infinitely better value entertainment.

Conversely it has been nice to see that Walter Smith has got the Scottish national team playing well by eliminating the fear factor.

My wife recounts a story from her schooldays of a teacher who used the racing form, presumably from the Sporting Life or Sporting Chronicle, to teach his class. Somehow I can’t see that this would happen today!

Watching Haydock on the TV today there was wind, rain and mud. All that was missing was a few jump races!

I particularly remember a quote about David Nicholson from Kate Fox’s book ‘The Racing Tribe’.

    Talking with Nicholson’s travelling head lad she writes;

‘When I admitted that I had initially found his boss quite intimidating, but was now revising my opinion, he said "Oh yes," and then, looking around as though making sure he could not be overheard, added almost in a whisper, "he’s much nicer than he lets on".’

Sadly other commitments prevent me from getting to Perth on Tuesday, but I hope you have a profitable visit!

Yes, Mr.Morshead was ‘in his element’ at the presentation following the pony races (I  was waiting for the car park to clear OK?).

"Where’s the clerk of the course?", he asked.

    "She’s behind you", we said!

    Oh the pantomime season!

In answer to the original question, after yesterday’s game against Paraguay, no, the Scots are not jealous. At least they’ve all got fingernails left!

Sven’s sparkling tactics again. Score a goal….. then line up on the edge of your own penalty area. Smack it 30 yards to Peter Crouch’s head…and tell him to hold it! Even more irritating is that his successor is sat next to him exchanging notes. It might work against Paraguay, who really don’t look a good side, but it won’t against better teams. Don’t give me any tosh about the weather being too hot. Wake up here, the World Cup is normally at hot times or in hot places!

I watched Argentina v Ivory Coast later on, an absolute delight, and the sad thing is that one of those sides may not make it to the next round.

I moved from England to Scotland in April, married to a Scot and seeing it a little from both sides of the fence.

I take it the title of this thread was intended to wind up the Scots.

Lunchtime at work yesterday I picked up the Daily Record and read page after page of England-bashing…then I had thought…..it’s ALMOST as nauseating as the pro-English crap eminating  from the tabloids south of the border.

The Sunday Mail, the Daily Record’s sabbath brother, put the St George’s cross on cars in various Scottish locations in Scotland and, surprise, surprise found locals who put the thing in the bin, ripped it up, burnt it, etc. Which all goes to prove that if you wave a red rag long enough you’ll find a bull who will charge!

Can’t say I’ve encountered much hostility over the World Cup. Maybe it’s just the people I mix with?

Having watched the replay I got the impression that the horse may have hurt himself as he came round the bend into the straight. No criticism of the jockey intended.

I saw Horatio Nelson win in fine fashion on a visit to The Curragh last year, and it’s very sad to see him bow out in such distressing style.

One thing about Peter Crouch is that other sides c**p themselves when he comes on the field. Both Argentina and Uruguay paid so much attention to him that it freed up the other forwards to score. No, I think he’s especially talented, though there are plenty worse in the Premier league, but it’s often what’s perceived rather than what is.

Incidentally I think England will get through the group stage and then, as usual, go out to a side ‘we could have beaten if Sven had the tactics right’.

Meanwhile having moved to Fife a month ago, there’s the much more important matter of the East Region Juniors kicking the s**te out of each other for the next month or so! Will Bathgate overhaul Tayport? Will Oakley hold on in Fife? Exciting stuff!

Quote: from Lingfield on 7:01 pm on Mar. 19, 2006[br]Thursday’s card in particular and the h’caps and amateur stuff in general didn’t interest me. What’s laying a horse out for a h’cap hurdle got to do with championship jump racing?<br>

I have to agree with Lingfield on this point. I just get the feeling that Thursday’s card has the feeling of a ‘filler’ to pad the meeting out to 4 days. More does not necessarily meet better.
