Took a bit of time to pick back up after the Covid break but judging by the response of those on the trip we will all be on going the next trip.
We paid £900 a head which included flights from Edinburgh to Prague, transport to and from our hotel , 3 nights B & B in the 4 Star Hotel Jozef, guided tour of Prague on the Saturday, transport to and from the races on Sunday. Hospitality at the races with a numbered seat in the stand after the last jump and pretty well as much food and drink as you could consume (I think that hospitality package alone sells for £200 a head although we may well have got a deal). For those not a package there’s about a 200 yard stretch of food stalls behind the stands, pretty much everything you can imagine and a prices you couldn’t find at UK courses.
Those were the basics but…, also included in the cost, though I suspect either Kelso Racecourse or their Managing Director Jonathan Garratt stood part of these, was a meal at a very good Czech Restaurant on the Saturday, a selectinos of starters to share and a main course each with wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks thrown in. Then on Sunday Jonathan took 17 of our party for a 3 course meal to the Michelin Guide listed Italian Restaurant Divinis, once again wine and beer included. Not sure how much white wine I drank because it was a ‘magical glass’ that kept filling itself… Jonathan paid on the credit card but we have offered to pay a bit extra in retrospect.
Clubbed together to get Jonathan a decent bottle of whisky which we presented on the plane on the way back this morning.
Judging by this I’ll be first on the list for the Kelso Members trip. My wife tolerates my horse racing hobby, normally sits reading her Kindle if she comes to the races, but enjoyed the weekend and the company immensely.
Racing Post made a pig’s ear of listing the non-finishers in their Results page. Three horses that unseated rider were listed as pulled up, I suspect because someone has picked up the Czech Jockey Club results page and misinterpreted the abbreviations. The race was streamed live on the Czech JC Youtube page so no excuse for not checking what happened.

Godfrey got close enough to Final Orders that I hope connections have a dig a Cheltenham Cross-Country event somewhere along the line.
Cracking ride by Keith Donoghue on Final Orders. Always well placed, jumped well and stayed on determinedly to see off a gallant former winner Godfrey.
Our group had a pre-meeting chat to James who had a decent spin round in 5th place on Greek Dessert. He’s back on an evening flight and off to more mundane matters at Worcester tomorrow! He swotted up in the route of the race, but “if in doubt follow Jan Faltesjek”. James travels regularly to ride in Europe and finds the Czech jockeys a fruednly bunch.
James told us that Keith Donoghue dud a lap ofthe track in a sweat suit and then went into the sauna (still allowed in Czechia). He was still 1kg over the 70kg weight and was fined a few Koruna from his prize money.
First race saw 4 of the 6 finishers disqualified for going wrong side of a marker. One of our party was pleased when I let them know that their 5th place was a winning place bet as the horse was promoted to 2nd.
10 runners stand their ground for Sunday’s race. The following is the local form expert’s view on the race:

Tipster’s verdict: Last year’s winning team has another ace up its sleeve. Final Orders may
not be quite as good as Stumptown, but he’s had an excellent season, culminating in a cross
country triumph at the Cheltenham Festival. GODFREY, however, can capitalise on his
knowledge of the local conditions. He has already won the Velká Pardubická and made a
great impression on his return from injury. On paper, it looks as though the race will be
decided between these two. However, High In The Sky showed last year that he can be
superbly prepared for the Velká Pardubická. Sacamiro has also won the Velká Pardubická,
and with his second place in June’s ‘million’ qualifier, he proved that even at the age of
thirteen, he cannot be written off. More was expected of Angkor Wat this year, but we still
remember how impressive his victory in the Cena Labe was.

Without checking I would venture that Final Orders is the first horse to have had a Pardubice prep race at Bellewstown!
Away to Czechia on Friday morning but will endeavour to get Saturday ratings up here tomorrow evening. Could be a task as this weekend normally has a stack of handicaps.
