On a linked subject, best day I ever had at work was doing some commissioning work by the Grand Union Canal at Stoke Bruerne. We had a telemetry system that controlled the pumping of supply of water along the canal to ensure it was balanced. Beautifully sunny day, strolling back and forth along the canal exchanging greetings with the boat people and lunch in The Navigation pub at Stoke Bruerne.
A couple of days pause as there are no Class 3 or better handicaps until Thursday 4th. Even missed otu watchnig an 18/1 winner this evening as I was too busy watching Canal Boat Diaries* on TV.
*If you want some chilled out TV viewing it’s on U & Yesterday (Freeview 27) at 7pm on Mondays.

First observation is that there used to be significant variations from course to course, but these figures suggest the ‘Industry SP’ has resulted in standardisation of margins.

Similarly the Tote has altered their modus operandi in recent years which has seriously reduced their favourite-longshot bias, generally follow SP now and bigger divdiends only paid in bigger fields and at major meetings (particularly those involving World Pool).
Course market has altered significantly in recent years. There’s much less competition now and on course bookmakers generally following exchange (Betfair) prices.
The communication of such matters on the race course is nil and the racereader even if on course presumbly wouldn’t be told, so if they could they would ask the question. Kihavah perished on Sunday at Kelso and only a few on course surmised the bad news when the tractor hauled wagon was called rather than the horse ambulance.
