While, as I am sure you may have noticed, I usually vehemently defend all things Scottish I have to report that this years Scottish Premier League looks to have fairly bleak prospects of offering any real quality this season.
I don’t know if anyone else has seen any games but what I have seen so far looks very poor fare indeed and we’re in for a long, dull season unless things improve rapidly.<br>
August 15, 2006 at 20:50 #89445I’m not as familiar as I should be with Scottish football, but I was under the impression that with the emergence of Hearts as a serious rival to the big two, there was an extra edge of competition. Having said that, I saw Celtic play Man Utd a couple of weeks back and they were pretty awful.
Is Scottish football worse than it was, say ten years ago and if so, why do you think that is?
August 30, 2006 at 22:32 #89446I am also from Scotland and feel that the start of the new season has set the tone for the most competative spl of recent times… granted the quality is perhaps not what it was ten or even five years ago but the entertainment value hasn’t dwindled imo
September 15, 2006 at 08:43 #89447Just when Celtic had me thinking that perhaps the quality of the SPL wasn’t that bad after all, Hearts get stuffed at home to Sparta Prague and Rangers can’t beat a bunch of no-hopers in the Uefa Cup.
Competitive it may be but quality it most certainly is not.
September 24, 2006 at 21:20 #89448Two games sum up a lot of the problems with the Scottish Premier League.
1. Aberdeen v Celtic – where the home side had 1 shot on target and basically were playing for a 0-0 draw. Celtic won 1-0.
2. Dunfermline v Rangers in the CIS Cup. Dunfermline had an isolated front runner and just seemed to be ‘hoping something might happen’. Result 0-2.
Since moving to Scotland I’ve watched a couple of Div3 and a lot of Scottish Junior games (that’s non-league for the uninitiated) and it’s been infinitely better value entertainment.
Conversely it has been nice to see that Walter Smith has got the Scottish national team playing well by eliminating the fear factor.

Maybe the Scottish Premier League is not as bad as I thought!
