Absolutely, DL. It will at least solve C4’s headaches where the clashes of cricket and racing are concerned on a Saturday afternoon, but with interest in the sport probably at a 20-year high following this series, letting coverage go looks an even worse decision now than at the start of the summer.

Hiya,
Went dog racing for the first time last night and found it more fun – and with more generous odds – than I expected. Hall Green’s not a bad little track, although with the circuit raised so far above the ground level of the outside viewing areas (is this normal for dog tracks?) I was glad of my seat in the restaurant. Some nice A1 races to finish the card, with Transform Ted landing his fourth race from his last five attempts at this level – comfortably the most impressive performance of the night.
Note to allcomers – avoid the tomato and basil sauce offered with the salmon in the Hall Green restaurant. It IS just a dollop of Dolmio straight out of the jar. Bandits.
Was it only ever a matter of not looking beyond Windmill Arms if Barry turned out to be unavailable? Are there no other alternative jockeys that;
– you and your dad rate enough outside of these two (I dunno, Ruby Walsh or Paul Carberry, perhaps?),
– are likely to be as available as you would have liked?
Not a loaded question, this, I ask merely out of interest.

Any strong opinions either way on David Tennant’s appointment as the next Doctor, NV? I read that some of the jokes / catchphrases which worked the best from this series will be carried over into the next, although I’m not sure whether "You sound Scottish!", "All planets have a Scotland, you know" will work quite as well….

This week I am mostly listening to "Hot Piece of Grass" by HAYSEED DIXIE, a riot of bluegrass interpretations of popular (mostly rock /metal) tunes. The band’s current single is their interpretation of Green Day’s "Holiday", rendered, as is usually the case, in the style of the breakneck banjo-heavy incidental music which used to accompany all the chase scenes in The Dukes of Hazzard.
It’s not all rawk covers, though. You may have seen them re-interpreting "Roses" by Outkast on Top of the Pops a few weeks ago. This is also present here, along with a disappointingly obvious selection in "Duelling Banjos".
They were superb live when I saw them in Wolverhampton last week, and I heartily recommend you catch them in the last few days of their tour before heading back home. Yee-haw!

I would nominate my first place of work as a pub on the hills above Saddleworth, run by a squat, dreadful tyrant with his fingers in both the local hunt and the BNP. His favourite wheeze was to banish bar staff to the shed to chop wood for hours at a time, whilst he propped up the bar with the equally estimable regulars and grizzled about how conciliatory and namby-pamby the Telegraph had become.
We all got fired when the minimum wage came in, him prefering to hire "underage kids who didn’t look it" in our stead. Nice man.
….which, if he wins them both, will presumably mean just the two runs in novices’ chases at the smaller tracks, before the strictures of the newish novices’ chase rules mean that he can ONLY take in similar races if Class C or higher thereafter.
Before he steps up, then, Bangor plus A N Other small racetrack are hopefully going to be treated to a potential top-class chaser passing his apprenticeship doing handstands.

Quote: from Prufrock on 7:23 am on April 2, 2005[br]I’d be interested in your views on A+TJ, graysons. To tell the truth, at the tenth time of listening I begun to think that it wasn’t so special after all. But it says something that I felt compelled to play it 10 times in 48 hours in the first place!

Having heard the album now, I’ll declare myself as being not especially keen; although that voice is certainly very, very different, and Antony’s life story is hardly workaday either.
You’ll already be aware The Montgolfier Brothers are playing at the Cornerhouse in October, Pruf? I suspect I’ll be making a trip up for that. From the sublime to the ridiculous first, though – I’m seeing Hayseed Dixie in Wolverhampton tomorrow night. Yee-haw, the rockgrass revolution continues!

So, assumably you wouldn’t have a problem with petrol at £1.10 per litre? Maybe even £1.30?

Absolutely no problem whatsoever. I would be in favour of even more widespread taxation (on fuel or otherwise), were it all to be channelled into sustaining the health, welfare and educational (academic and vocational) systems, and a fully integrated public transport system – oh yes, and the mandatory 5p in the pound payment to charity as discussed in another thread earlier this summer.

Quote: from Prufrock on 7:16 pm on Aug. 24, 2005[br] and am puzzled if pleased by graysoncolumn’s citing of the wind farm above Halifax as a contender.
Hebden Bridge (border of Yorkshire/Lancashire, great pubs, full of liberals and intellectuals) deserves a mention, IMO.

Puzzled? The wind farm is lovely, Pruf, as are all wind farms generally. Cue alternative power resources thread.
Hebden Bridge is indeed a wonderful place for all the reasons mentioned. Possibly because of these it is also, trivia fans, the place in Britain with the biggest head count of lesbians per thousand population.
If you’re still sticking to the convictions of your thread about wanting to a learn new thing every day, Lolly’s Mate, will that do you for today? :)

Hiya,
Provisionally I’ll say I’d be up for Towcester and Cottenham (diary permitting), and most other places with jumps in them. My next definite trip to the races will be to Cartmel a week on Saturday – drop me a line if you feel like meeting up. I’ll be in the Grandstand area – pity they’ve had to whack the price up to £17 there nowadays, but this was apparently done to ensure the racecourse executive had enough of a "fighting fund" with which to bid for meetings from next year onwards.
As regards the original question of this thread, I have met the following chaps and found them all to be splendid company;
Happy Jack (Thorpe Lodge PTP)
Prufrock (Montgolfier Brothers gig)
Ian Davies (beautiful Basingstoke (…))
APRacing (Perth races)
Alchemist (Chaddesley Corbett PTP)
Always happy to add to that tally in these relatively safe, post-Haywood days….

Hiya,
If one were to regard The Young Ones as a sitcom, it and Fawlty Towers would pee all over everything else mentioned on this thread to date.
Bread was not only dreary, it practically ostracised Carla Lane from her home city for its wilfull portraying of (all?) Scousers as cheating, dole-twiddling rogues – a portrayal Lane herself has admitted in interviews subsequently she had (and still has) no problem with putting forward. Maybe some of the Liverpudlians on the Forum have a thing or two to say about her.

Fave female author? Probably Poppy Z Brite, with her seductive, atmospheric gay vampire horror novels such as Lost Souls. Wonderful stuff.
