Yes, McCoy’s record on Best Mate is atrocious isn’t it? Two rides, runner-up in King George when given instructions to conserve stamina then winning same race following year. I wouldn’t rule out McCoy riding him this year considering Murphy is likely to be unavailable on the big days. Jim Lewis is a fan even if the Hen isn’t.

Are you talking about Andrew Thornton? I don’t rate him one jot. He rarely gives his horse any help at obstacles and his ability to see a stride is almost non existent. Might just be me but I think he leaves a horse to his own devices at an obstacle. Remember he was at his most effective on Kingscliff when he had no reigns to control him.

I suppose McCoy looks like being very hard on horses. Yet they continue to run for him. I often see him getting off a horse thinking the poor animal will never be the same again…and yet it does. Maybe some animals do need quiter riders but then again, maybe its all in our heads.
I think people get too caught up with McCoy giving horses a hard ride.. To use an analogy, some people are great footballers but will only be great because of their manager who gives them a b*llocking each week when they don’t perform, you could say that McCoy is the best motivator of NH horses there is, his style is just more obvious.. McCoy and Carberry are like comparing Stuart Pearce and Erickson…. And who would the public go for?

i know, dad had to give barry a call wed morning and he said he couldnt comit himself fully so tony now riding him for the rest of the season, it won’t be same watching ted run with barry on him he’s a great friend of the family, i suppose i will have to give tony a chance we’ll see how things go tomorrow

i guess this is why people say it’s not easy owning a horse x

    very gracious iris.

i remember backing ad hoc the time he got beat by iris and thinking "damn that man mccoy". a tough jockey on a tough horse will be a hard combo to beat this season!! i wouldn’t be too worried if i was you.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this awesome animal. Let’s hope he turns into a champion over fences as well. He travels as well in his races as any NH horse I have ever seen.
btw Iris Gift1, how old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?
Was it only ever a matter of not looking beyond Windmill Arms if Barry turned out to be unavailable? Are there no other alternative jockeys that;

    – you and your dad rate enough outside of these two (I dunno, Ruby Walsh or Paul Carberry, perhaps?),

    – are likely to be as available as you would have liked?

Not a loaded question, this, I ask merely out of interest.

A below par performance in my view. He’ll learn a fair bit from his mistakes today, but will need to improve an absoloute ton to take a hand in the better races.

I would imagine Jeremy that because of his commitments to Paul Nicholls that Ruby wouldn’t be able to ride either.
Carberry wouldn’t be a bad shout although I don’t think AP did anything wrong today.
No doubt he has to improve significantly on topday but it was only his second run in 18 months so hopefully he’ll wil show marked improvement next time, certainly needs to.

He didn’t jump very well, he looks like a horse that’s been hurdling for too long.

They’ve supposedly been schooling him over fences for 2 years, well, they haven’t made much of a fist of it.

I remember his first appearance over hurdles. He jumped poorly that day, but improved with time. I think he will come on for the run. But beating sweet diversion (8lbs worse off) by four lengths puts it into context.

I suspect the jumping will improve over time and a more galloping course where stamina will benefit him.

I wasn’t impressed by his jumping and like Venusian thought he was hurdling his fences.

However hopefully he can improve on this, first run after a lay off so he’s owed the benefit of the doubt, but at times was a bit slow and careful, if he’s going for the Gold Cup this year it’s a mountain to climb at this point.

Very good to see him winning again though, anda cracking run from the second.

at the end of the day he won his race, he’s been off the track for 217 days you’ve got to give him the credit for that, your only as good as your last run.
the feedback seems to be quite negative.

im baking a huge humble pie ready for every who wants a piece after the festival, you’ve got a choice of custard or cream with it.
