May 9, 2026 at 09:11 #1766349Backed him to win the GN at 88-1. No great insight there, I backed him every time he ran.
I remember one of his owners saying all he was bothered about was the horse not shaming him, which said a lot to me about his owner. I never had doubts about Aurora

RIP Aurora’s Encore.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 9, 2026 at 18:16 #1766420Probably the last Grand National winner that I got from studying the form other than pin sticking so I had a fondness first him. It’s good that he had a long’ish retirement because I think he sustained an injury in his last race. RIP

May 10, 2026 at 10:10 #1766441An under-rated high-priced National winner, like Last Suspect, Mon Mome and Anglo, who had significant chances based on past form, unlike Foinavon, who didn’t. Aurora’s Encore had finished 2nd in the previous year’s Scottish National, so his Aintree win was no fluke. He had a wonderful retirement and was a much-loved horse for Sue and Harvey Smith during an era when English horses won most Nationals. It’s astonishing to realise that the only Irish winner between 1958 and 1999 was L’Escargot in 1975 ! How the race has changed !
May 10, 2026 at 12:23 #1766447The owners got him not long before the National , the Scot Nat produced plenty of winners in the national before the latest changes made it a graded race …
