Well I’ve backed Exotic Dancer and I wouldn’t swap bets with anyone else.

The horse has had a good season improving all the way through it and probably just as importantly his best two performances have been when stepped up in trip to three miles and slightly in excess of three miles. He wasn’t stopping at Cheltenham last time and jumped the last in the style of a horse with petrol in the tank. An extra furlong should suit rather than hinder him and he’s already run to a mark high enough to give him a winning chance. He won’t mind the ground whatever it is and he’ll be switched off early and when others are crying enough late on he’ll be getting stronger. I think he can run to a mark of mid to high 170’s and I think he has a hell of a chance.

Kauto Star if he stays and jumps error free he’ll win but I don’t think he will if he does jump round I think he’ll be running on almost empty up the hill.

War Of Attrition needs good ground he probably won’t get it and in any case his win last season was in a poor affair and only earned him a rating of around 172/173. He will need a better performance to win this time year.

In Compliance has had problems and won’t stay anyway, neither will The Listener or Racing Demon.

Our Vic won’t jump round clearly in a competitive race like this and probably won’t get home either.

State Of Play needs to improve but he’s a bit of a dark horse, lightly raced and he can run a good race.

One at a big price – Beef Or Salmon maybe? I know he doesn’t travel well but he ran well enough at Haydock earlier in the season and if the ground is really soft and he jumps OK he may surprise a few he’ll stay every yard and could reach a place if he can find enough early pace to stay in touch.

Gotta be Exotic Dancer for me though.

    Jim, no problem.

I can tolerate all weather through the winter months keep the sport going not too much of a problem with that. I just wish thats how it would stay.

The very same ones NH trainers use to get their horses fit :o

No not at all I applaud all weather gallops.

Cormack has put across pretty much everything I’d want to say.

You are quite right Flatseasonlover I can’t stand the all weather, I’m a traditionalist like that.

I’m entitled to that view as much as you are to yours.

Quote: from Sal on 5:58 pm on Feb. 23, 2007[br]I think some people are getting their knickers in a knot for no reason. He’s not terribly likely to run, and it’s quite an interesting back-up plan.

If they are planning an overseas assault with him at some point later in the season it makes sense to give him a try on a surface other than turf. Is it much different from Aidan O’Brien’s plans to bring some of his Breeders’ Cup challengers over for a spin round Wolverhampton? It isn’t exactly a seller either – enough of the Derby winners returning as 4yos have started out in theoretically uncompetitive races.

    It all sets a precedent.

All weather racing was created to keep horse racing going through bad weather stop it having blank days.

Once a group race was added ……….. guess what others follow. Once one Derby winner runs at Lingfield …………. guess what? More will follow.

We will soon be having Championship races on the all weather like they do in the states.

The day that happens is the day I will give up following the sport.

To expand on my previous post a bit. The race was altered in distance at the start of the 1980’s, it’s a few hundred yards shorter than it was previously.

Persian War would’ve found it too sharp against the best.

The likes of Lanzarote, Comedy Of Errors, Dawn Run wouldn’t have been good enough. Istabraq and See You Then were champions but in poor eras.

The race would’ve been between the others. The 1970’s was a golden era, Monskfield, Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon.

My money would be on Sea Pigeon on the "new track" his tank didn’t empty like it did over the extended trip.

Once the race was moved back to 2 miles in 1980 (81?) – Sea Pigeon.

I think contemplating running a Derby winner on the all weather is demeaning to the stature of the Derby. What on earth are Sir Percy’s connections thinking of?

Keep the horse to turf FFS. Can’t stand all weather racing as it is it is not traditional proper horse racing.

The thought of Nijinsky or Dancing Brave running on the dirt at Lingfield ……….. my god, somebody have a word.

I got Ashley Brook running to a mark of 161 which is eight pounds below his optimum rating.

I suppose it depends on your viewpoint and how much you value handicap / speed ratings.

Wasn’t a disasterous run by any means just don’t think it was near his best.

Interestingly the RPR for that run is only 152.

If Well Chief is as good as he was a couple of years back he wins baring accidents.

However, the Game Spirit didn’t tell us that much really his biggest rival fell early on and Ashley Brook for me disappointed. On that evidence we know Well Chief retains plenty of ability but we can’t be certain just how much.

I can’t see Exotic Dancer going for the GC, I’d say he’ll be running the Ryanair….

Quote: from davidjohnson on 3:03 pm on Feb. 11, 2007[br]Why was Generous a good Derby winner? Because he beat Marju 5 lengths in that contest. or because he’d been beaten nearly 10 lengths by Mystiko at Newmarket.
Generous was a good horse followed up with wins in the Irish Derby beating Suave Dancer then winning the King George by seven lengths.

I don’t think he was an exceptional horse like a Nijinsky or a Mill Reef but he weren’t bad.

Whether those that you mention would have been placed in the Guineas or not has no relevance at all to the level of form they were capable of at a mile and a half. Would you really expect a son of a Prix du Cadaran winner to be able to make an impact at a mile?
Maybe not not that breeding is always transparent. Who would’ve thought for example that Red Rum would’ve been a National hero? Wasn’t he bred to be a sprinter?

If a Derby winner is good enough to be placed in a Guineas they’re usually a very good horse. Generous was forth in the Guineas, good Derby winner. Nashwan, Dancing Brave both won Guineas were exceptional over a mile and a half.

If George Washington hadn’t run in the 2000 Sir Percy would’ve been a Guineas / Derby winner. He was by no means a bad horse he just had niggle, after niggle and Tregonning could never really get him suitably right to run him. When he did finally run in the Champion Stakes he went out like a light.

Sir Percy had problem after problem last season was never fully fit, very harsh to judge his as a possible worst.

Shaamit was useless, Quest For Fame, Kris Kin, North Light all of whom were far worse than Sir Percy. Neither would’ve been placed in a Guineas if they’d started the day before.

Quote: from Salselon on 9:29 pm on Feb. 10, 2007[br]Would anyone argue that that was the best performance by a chaser this season?

Should be interesting to read the RP tomorrow…

Yes me. Either Kauto Star’s at Haydock or his King George run on the book you could easily pick as better performances.

Don’t forget Well Chief was getting weight today. On todays run theres about a pound or two between him and Voy Por Ustedes on my ratings.

Well Chief is clearly back retaining plenty of ability but whether he is quite as good as he was a couple of years ago I wouldn’t be certain yet not on the back of this one run alone.
