I think Joncol speaks more to my viewpoint that others do.

If I put myself in the position of being responsible for racing at Newbury, and I received reports that three horses had collapsed, two fatally, in the parade ring before the first race, I can’t see why I would permit racing to go ahead.

I understand their may be communication issues, I understand there is a limited window of time, I understand that vets can only do a brief analysis of the horses, but the very fact that multiple competitors in a contest collapsed and died, with no clear reason forthcoming, in an area surrounded by customers of the racecourse – I just can’t see how anyone could proceed in such circumstances.

It smacks of indifference to the health of horses, an inability to assess the severity of a situation, and an absence of responsible leadership.

I also believe that this incident will hurt horse racing in the general public’s eyes more than any event that I can remember.

A horrendous death by electrocution is something everyone can shudder at the thought of, and the response of proceeding with the first race only exacerbates that horror.

Are there not copyright issues here ?

It’s YouTube hosted content. If an uploader wishes their videos not to be embedded, they can choose not to (as RUK often do – the videos are still linked to and viewable at youtube.com).

If a content owner believes their copyright has been infringed, they can have the offending content removed from YouTube by using the appropriate Google channels.

There was a H. Joseph Allen who, with the billionaire Peter Grant, owned Just A Game (1980 American Champion Female Turf Horse). She started her career in Ireland.

JQ also improved massively today. She was Francome’s pick of the paddock and now has shown Group 1 form. I’ve seen many scenarios where a filly that has improved so rapidly, with good looks to match, perform brilliantly the rest of the season. Mr Martin has an excellent filly for this year IMHO and I hope he gets great enjoyment out of her in 2010. He most certainly deserves it.

Personally I agreed with the stewards’ decision and had such an opinion as soon as I saw the head on.

Mr Martin’s story is quite incredible as described in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No%C3%ABl_Martin

Paralyzed after an attack by neo-Nazis in Germany, sought euthanasia after his wife died, won at Royal Ascot, participated in a film about his life but went to court to block Channel 4 showing two scenes in particular, and now experienced a disqualification in a Classic.

I wish him good luck with his life and 2nd in a Guineas is a blessing many would wish for.

Okay people, heavy rain this morning.

I asked this question before, I think even putting it in bold, but I don’t think I got any replies:-

Other than last year, which other Derbies were run on an off-track?

    . . .

    SLOPPY TRACK CONDITIONS:
    May 16, 1925 Flying Ebony
    May 1, 1948 Citation
May 7, 1994 Go for Gin
    May 1, 2004 Smarty Jones

    MUDDY TRACK CONDITIONS:
    May 14, 1890 Riley
    May 11, 1912 Worth
    May 11, 1918 Exterminator
May 18, 1929 Clyde van Dusen
    June 9, 1945 Hoop Jr.
    May 3, 1958 Tim Tam
    May 6, 1989 Sunday Silence

plus last year of course – some superstars in those lists

    On the topic yesterday,

    Robert99

made an excellent observation that annotations could be used to further improve the experience for hearing-impaired fans as the subtitles make it difficult to focus both on the race and the commentary.

This led to the idea of using YouTube’s "collaborative annotations" feature to allow multiple people annotate a YouTube racing video with a type of "comments-in-running".

If anyone is interested in exploring this idea with me, please send a PM.

Very, very interesting. I remember being introduced to these same topics almost 9 years ago by someone with a very similar bio – different name though. In fact, that bio is pretty much on the mark; makes me think I was being given the run-around :)

Anyway, order has been placed and looking forward to reading about it. If it is who it think it is, this should be a very high quality book.
