Cannot for the life of me work that one out … you’d have expected it in France but very, very unusual for British stewards to reverse on such evidence.
Have to say I disagreed with Francome’s opinion that JQ would still have won had they kept a straight line … and I think Jim McGrath disagreed as well except of course he wouldn’t contradict JF live on air !! … Can only assume the stewards considered the fav to have been intimidated by the distance he got carried across to the centre because actual contact was minimal.
Have to feel for the owner after that interview … bet they don’t ask him for his reaction !!
May 2, 2010 at 14:56 #293566JQ barely brushed the fav. Can’t believe that was over-turned. SD’s momentum wasn’t hindered in my opinion.
Was one of the most surreal 20 minutes in racing, with the interview with the owner of JQ and then the announcing of the result. Very weird television.
The way they filles on the far side had absolutely no chance left a very sour taste in the mouth too
May 2, 2010 at 15:02 #293573I don’t think the result should’ve been reversed either the second lost just as much ground as the eventual winner who’s jockey didn’t have to stop riding at all.
Complete farce of a race anyway unless you raced in the group near the rail you had absolutely no chance.
May 2, 2010 at 15:06 #293577Didn’t hav a bet and wouldn’t have been on either of the first two home if I had, but wow, I felt for Henry Cecil and the owner of the original winner, and her poor lass who was so clearly delighted. Horrible moment for them.
Watching the head on I could not understand why the jockey pulled his whip through to the wrong hand AT ALL. The JQ filly was going straight until he switched it, when he hit her on that side she ran away from it and towards her rival Special Duty. Then he continued to ride with it in the wrong hand- making himself vulnerable to just this decision. I am sure he must be kicking himself now, but why oh why did he do it!!!

Yes the 2nd did loose as much ground but that was her own fault for drifting across the course, the argument for the French horse is she lost ground through no fault of her own, there is a diferrence.
The facts of this race are as follows;
When TQ swiched his whip to his left hand his horse began to drift right into Special Duty, the most important point to note is at this very stage Special Duty was slightly in front, only slightly but all the same in front, when she was intefered with it did affect her momentum and TQ’s filly regained the lead.
Im not laying blame on jockey here whatsoever but in my view the interference although not intentional did cost Special Duty the win and therefore places were rightly reversed.
May 2, 2010 at 15:14 #293589Agreed Arabesque … fatal error by an otherwise excellent jockey … I still think that had he switched his whip and kept JQ straighter the fav would not have been intimidated and "probably" gone past him … none of us can say for certain though ……
Have to say I felt for Mike Cattermole on the interview with Noel Martin … very difficult to be thrust into that sort of an interview without knowing the extraordinary circumstances of how he became a paraplegic … the death of his wife … his attempts at assisted suicide etc ., TV interviewers nightmare !!!
May 2, 2010 at 15:21 #293599Totally agree BHL. Poor old Cat. Not had much luck so far this season.
His luck doesn’t get much better as he’s agreed to do a Q&A qith us…

Im not usually one to praise Channel four but I thought they handled the situation rather well, im sure they would of been tempted to "pull the plug" and move on.
Never an easy situation to handle but well done Catt
May 2, 2010 at 15:33 #293613You’ve got to ask him about that interview, albrookes … I have a feeling he’ll remember that one for a long time … Even allowing for the emotion of it all, I’m willing to bet the other crew members were secretly chuckling at his predicament … would have been a hard enough interview even armed with the knowledge of Noel Martin’s past … going into it unarmed was the TV interviewers equivalent of the bomb disposal guy in "The Hurt Locker" approaching the booby trapped vehicle without protective clothing !!
Well done Catt, I think you just about pulled it off !!
May 2, 2010 at 15:39 #293618I’m far from convinced that Queally’s actions were unintentional. I think he realised he was being done and decided that a drift might stop the winner’s momentum. I don’t blame him for that, it was his only option and he had to take his chance that he wouldn’t be demoted. We see professional fouls all the time in football and some are penalised and some not. On this occasion he tried to block the winner and paid the price. C’est la vie.

You could hear a bit of chuckling going on behind when poor Noel critiscised Channel 4!

That would certainly explain why he made what appeared to be an almost suicidal move, not that I like to think that of the jockey.
May 2, 2010 at 15:49 #293634Yes, I heard that too, TAPK … the criticism that he managed to crowbar into the interview stemmed from a court case against Channel 4 where Martin tried unsuccessfully to take out an injunction to stop them from screening a documentary about his life.
May 2, 2010 at 15:57 #293638What didn"t help was Catt asking Noel wether his Missus was here to see the filly, who was named after her "win" the Guineas! Then came the Neo Nazi bit! Geez it was getting painful unfortunately! Another Sad day for Noel! Catt will get over his a lot quicker!

I think its very harsh to blame Catt about his wife question.
Is Catt supposed to know the marrital status of every single owner at Newmarket???
I think thats being a bit over critical.
Personally speaking I had never heard of this owner or his story until today, the argument is since Catt is employed in racing he maybe should of known, my own view however is that is being slightly over critical.
May 2, 2010 at 16:26 #293662I think the thing that most concerned me today was Henry Cecil’s interview. I know he’s renowned for being a man of few words but I detected something about him today in terms of his mental agility which is slightly concerning for his well-being.
May 2, 2010 at 16:32 #293666Joncol, I don’t think TAPK was actually being critical of Catt’s handling of the interview … just unfortunate that he unwittingly asked the "wife" question which then precipitated a pretty uncomfortable 2 or 3 minutes of interview on the back of it … I think Catt handled it better than some I could think of ……
By the way, did anyone pick up Michael Hills’ throwaway line after Equiano’s win yesterday … when interviewed by Emma Spencer on the way back to the unsaddling enclosure he remarked on Equiano’s skittishness by commenting to Emma, "he must be the first man who’s ever tried to run away from you" … brave comment given her marital status at the moment I thought !!
