Most Over Hyped – George Washington’s stud career.

60,000 Euros for a date with Gorgeous George, but he turned out to be Boy George instead.

George’s problem was what he was delivering, not where he was delivering it!

I may be getting the name wrong here so apologies but my choice is Celtic Swing, he won a conditions race at Ascot at their October meeting and Peter Savill thought his horse was a world beater. Oops

I think that you have got the name wrong Phil.
Although his 3 year old career never quite lived up to the expectations, Celtic Swing lost by a head in the 2000 Guineas before winning the French Derby. He then got injured in the Irish Derby which eventually finished his career

Cigar was sold for $25 million to Ashford Stud; his first-year fee was $75,000. There was serious talk of him returning to the track as a 7yo following the news that he was a dud. Even after he was declared infertile and sent to the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park, he was still tested annually to see if his swimmers had somehow improved. They stopped after about 10 years of trying.

This year St Nicholas Abbey was a crushing disapointment.

Steinbeck was another who was supposed to be a world beater, but instead of him being a dreamboat he turned out to be a footnote.

Do you remember the hype about William Hogarth before he ran ? He was supposed to be a real Derby horse. He won yesterday at Bangor on Dee.

Pescatorio was supposedly the big Derby hope in 2006.

He ended up running down the field in a 60-90 Handicap around Ballybrit!

Maybe didnt have the profile as a few of the horses listed in this thread, however, Ouninpohja defintely had a lot of hype regarding how good he could be, yet, never seemingly fulfilled that hype.

Merdeka – better than Kicking King apparently!

Feckin hound fell while running loose at Clonmel one day.

Good shout. Ballytrim another son of Luso that turned out to be a boat having been talked up by plenty in his bumper days.

Mhic Mocroi of Eric McNamara’s was another horse that was talked up as a world-beater (presumably on his point victories) but never came anywhere near showing it on the track.

Raydan of John Oxx’s yet another that was talked up as a potential Classic prospect but never came within an arse’s roar of pattern class.

I could go on all day really!

Stoneville was another from that yard that was the next big thing. Ironically enough he was beaten by Merdeka over hurdles at Naas! Killed in his first chase at Thurles IIRC.

Any amount of Willie Mullins’ bumper horses could be lumped in here – Equus Maximus, Mad Fish, Apt Approach, Lilywhite Dancer etc.

Think that’s a shade unfair on Stoneville. I had him down as a potentially very useful novice chaser.

When it comes to bumper horses, it’s hard to look past Martinstown and Sporting Limerick really.

Maybe Gungadu is one for this thread as well, for all that he turned out to be a useful chaser in his own right.
