Nonsense!

It was a horrendous tackle and Binya was well out of order but the ref dealt with it with a straight red card, to speak of taking action against the player is ridiculous given that there was no harm done to Brown (who incidentally has been known to throw the odd wild tackle in himself) .
Had Brown’s leg been broken then that would be a different matter.
You see wild tackles in almost every game of football these days so why should this tackle be any different as to be investigated?

I’ve seen plenty of worse tackles with far more serious consequences.
From Glasgow are you? Just out of interest are you a Rangers fan? I’m not a Celtic fan (in derbies I favour Rangers).
As the YouTube uploader implies, the tackle was like Roy Keane’s assault on Haaland a few years ago. That tackle finished Haaland as a player and it was only sheer good luck that prevented a similar outcome last night. The intent was certainly there!
I remember some time in the late 80’s an Arsenal player getting a 9 match ban for punching an opposing player. I think it was Paul Davis, who broke Glenn Cockerill’s jaw in an incident that wasn’t seen by the officials on the day. I think it was one of the first cases of video evidence used to punish a player.
Anyway, my question is, if that was worth a 9 match ban, what should the Benfica player get for the ugliest tackle I have ever seen in my life on Scott Brown last night.
Does it, or should it matter that his leg didn’t break?
I’m reading now on Sky Sports News that UEFA will investigate and punish accordingly.
Of course, you can’t compare last night’s incident with what happened to Paul Davis as last night’s incident was punished there and then by the ref.
But surely, a tackle like that needs severely clamping down on so that UEFA can send a message out that such tackles have no place in the game. It was pre-meditated and the guy clearly tried to break Brown’s leg. Like I say, it was horrendous and I don’t think I have ever seen a worse tackle in my life. How Brown’s leg didn’t snap is beyond me, and I am just so glad the lad is ok.
Personally I would give the Benfica player (who’s name I can’t remember and don’t care to remember) at least a 6 match ban. Hopefully UEFA throw the book at him.
Any opinions?
Mike
Absolutely vile, wasn’t it?
For those with a strong stomach the tackle is here on YouTube

The offender is called Augustin Binya.
My view is that he should be banned for 12 months without pay or endorsements with a suspended life ban for any repetition.
crazy idea, after such a long season
From memory, Michael Tabor was wondering if DT had had enough after the Irish Champion Stakes and worried about going to the well too often.
Having since won the Arc and run with some credit in the BC Turf I wouldn’t blame them for having one last hurrah in the Tokyo race as it’s set up for him to bow out on a high if he’s still in good shape.
Fav jockeys outside of the obvious ones;
Flat:Rab Havlin
NH: Wayne HutchinsonCan’t remember the exact races concerned (Fighting Fifth may have been one) but Gypsy Dave Goulding’s handling of Ekbalco was something to behold.
He got some stick when he got it wrong, though!
Advance congratulations to Xavier Aizpuru who leads the American Steeplechase jockeys championship by 5 wins(he has 20) from Paddy Young (ex Henrietta Knight) who is one in front of Carl Rafter and Chris McCarron’s nephew Matt with only 1 days racing remaining when the Colonial Cup is contested.
It’s great to see that these 3 riders plus James Slater who has 9 wins for the year have done so well in the US
Nice to hear he’s doing well for himself. Wondered what had happened to him.
My apologies to Mahler for suggesting last week that he may not be man enough for the race.

Sorry to hear about the Brian Ellison horse. He seems to be one unlucky trainer at big meetings. I’m thinking of Latalomne in particular.
Anyone know if he’s OK. According to RP has not raced since PU at M. Rasen in 05.
He had his own ideas about the game but as you say, he has a great pedigree. Not to sure how much of a success he will be though I suppose his fee will help him out.
Quirkiness not necessarily a bad thing.
Montjeu springs to mind and apparently Nasrullah was a raving nutcase!
Not for one second suggesting that EOL will climb to those heights but I’d be prepared to take a chance on him even with a choicely bred mare.Is there a chance that Kauto Star could be getting a little ‘fed up’ with racing?
It would be a great shame but for last season which already cemented his place in legend-dom.
At his age, Kauto should theoretically still be improving as even French breds can race beyond seven. But it is a little unnerving to see a horse who travels as well as any before him slack off after a mile on the undemanding Mildmay course.
I must say that this crossed my mind as well.
Hope we’re wrong, but it bears watching and certainly wouldn’t be taking a short price next time even though he will be fitter. At the prices it has to be Ollie Magern whose profile is obvious to all: best caught fresh, CD winner, 5lb pull from AF and SOP, has a terrific trainer of staying chasers in equally terrific form, and the new jockey should suit his style of running. I’ve taken 5.9
Agreed that we probably will see the best of OM today. Whether that will be good enough, I’m not sure but whoever wins it will be very fit as the last mile will find out the rest.
I have a sneaking fancy that Monkerhostin may be back to something like his best so he would be my pick with OM the danger.Oh no they’re not!!!!!!!

There was a Celestial Storm that day and we didn’t get our copies of the Racing Ghost
Any road up, glad he’s now safely at stud!
Hurdling
Can you imagine? God forbid he fell and hurt himself. You’d have people decrying this awful jumping game, wondering why horses were being put at risk every day as they’re made to jump over obstacles whilst running at speed on ground ranging from bottomless to bone-breakingly fast.
Or maybe not.
Glad to see that Walkinthepark (2005 Derby runner-up) has been found a job at stud in France and the reports that he may be going hurdling are wide of the mark.
Very sorry to see him go. A tough and talented horse.
Maybe the best son of Ardross who was one of my favourite flat horses.
You cannot know what is going to happen in the future, this applies to HR situation, GW situation etc,etc etc
You can only form an opinion, an estimation of probability , call it what you will
This is what connections do, they form an opinion that their horse is capable and fit to run.
when the race starts it enters the unknown, you do not know the result until the event has run it’s course
All the opinions on these threads are forming after the event , where were they before the event?
.I’ve not seen one person state, GW is gonna finish dead if he runs in the Classic
I now give up on trying to tell you this and wish all the best with your fortune telling
You don’t need to waste your time or mine telling me the obvious but you have chosen to do so anyway.
What I said in the beginning was that I was uncomfortable with the chance that HR’s connections took with his wellbeing. I would imagine that others who saw the race would agree. As that was before the race no fortune telling was required.
My view is that they played Russian Roulette with HR and lost because they thought that the reward was worth the risk. Shame on them for that.
If you want to have the last word, feel free. I’m done.
There’s a nice slideshow on Sporting Life of George in happier times.

RIP George.
They (KF and AOB) took a gamble with the horse’s wellbeing and lost.
Yes , they did, just like every other owner takes a gamble when they send a horse to race
It’s an unknown if their horse is going to return unscathed and why you lot can’t see this is beyond me
Talk of banging head against wall
Why are you equating the HR situation with that of any owner sending their horse to run in any race?
Fallon thought that there may have been something wrong with the horse when he arrived at the start of one of the most physically demanding flat races run anywhere but after consulting with the connections it was decided to give it a go.
Surely that makes this an extraordinary case and it cannot just be dismissed as being the same risk everybody takes when they send a horse to the races?Peter
Yes Peter i’m serious, because if they’d seen it coming he wouldn’t have run
Do you really think they would intentionally run a horse they knew was hurt with the world watching
KF thought there was summat wrong, it was inspected and passed fit to race , it raced for about 9f and the broke down
KF probably regrets not withdrawing him, but he decided to race, he took a decision, it ended up the wrong one
Decision are made everyday, most of em will be right, but ultimately some will be wrong, some with fatal consequences
They (KF and AOB) took a gamble with the horse’s wellbeing and lost. Would they have run the horse in a 6f Maiden at Naas under the same circs?
Where a horse’s welfare is concerned the size of purse and stallion value should be immaterial.- AuthorPosts
