Hello,
Very strange that there is no thread covering The Melbourne Cup yet..

Well, I might as well air my views…
I believe the ground has gone against PURPLE MOON and TUNGSTEN STRIKE, and I have a tendancy to think MAHLER just isn’t good enough.
I am going for ZIPPING after an eye catching latest run, and he has ran well in this race before, trading around 7/1.
The prize money for the race: Winner, £1.25 million is astounding. However I now tend to agree with UK owners about the level of prize money on offer within the UK. I carried a quick exercise by simply looking at each horse’s profile on RP, and I was amazed by the prize money acquired by seemingly ordinary horses’ from such few races’. The sums were amassed not only by winning races, but place money as well.
First thoughts is that there are comparatively few, but well financed races run throughout their season. The total prize money seems to be distributed between fewer races, unlike the UK where a similar amount of cash is distributed between a mass of races’.

Yep, horse ownership seems a tad more lucrative over there than over ‘ere!

regards,
doyley
November 5, 2007 at 19:08 #123077Had forgotten – what time is the race? Looks like I’ll be listening to it on a crackly radio in the early hours as usual….[if it’s on the radio, that is…]
November 5, 2007 at 19:13 #123081The thing that struck me when I looked at the card in the Post was that the 22 locally trained all, without exception, had their last race either 3, 10 or 17 days ago.
Now I know that this is the standard modus operandi in Aussie racing, but it’s still surprising that not one single trainer is prepared to try something different.
It’s as if the Ebor field consisted entirely of horses that ran at least once after the King George meeting at Ascot.
Hard to believe there isn’t a single horse in training over there that wouldnt benefit from being fresh for such a severe test of stamina and speed.

November 5, 2007 at 20:24 #123099My pick is the 8yo veteran Gallic. He has won the G1 Sydney Cup over 2 miles in April. After a break and 2 weaker performances over too short distances he came back in form in time and has won the G2 Cathay Pacific Airways Cup on the 27th October. He has won at tomorrows distance, course and going and is around 20-1.
Good luck!November 5, 2007 at 21:25 #123106I can’t believe that Blue Monday is 40/1. Good enough last year to run 3rd in the Eclipse and Juddmonte and is sure to appreciate the going unlike at least half the field. It can’t be underestimated the importance of a good run in the Caulfield Cup, either – by my reckoning only Media Puzzle and Makybe Diva (once) in recent years have not run (and finished in the first six) at Caulfield prior to winning the Cup.
November 6, 2007 at 01:24 #123132I agree regarding Blue Monday.
Most of the main fancies either won’t act on the ground or have a big question mark on it, whereas Blue Monday will have no problems with it. He’s better off at the weights with those from the Caulfield Cup, were he kept on well enough to suggest he may have a chance at the trip. The distance is still the big question mark for him though, but he is by Darshaan, and there is some stamina on the dam’s side.
So at the odds available I reckon he’s worth a small e/w fun bet.
November 6, 2007 at 02:12 #123134Zipping is now the most likely winner for me. My six year old nephew picked it along with the caulfield cup winner, so its a formality folks!!
November 6, 2007 at 05:34 #123136Brilliant run by Graeme Rogerson’s Efficient to come from well off the pace at the 500m to win going away from Purple Moon and Mahler.
Super effort by the Europeans in particular Mahler who sat outside the leader Tungsten Strike all the way and with that horse wanting to be one off the fence Mahler was a little wide.
No excuses though he will be the one to beat next year when he’s a more dveleoped 4Y0 if AOB brings him back.
Very clean, incident free race and won by jockey Michael Rodd who I’ve known since he was a tiny apprentice nine years ago.

November 6, 2007 at 11:21 #123170Sympathies must lie with Brian Ellison today who lost Bay Story in one of the earlier races on the Flemmington card. The horse was running a massive race when it broke a hind leg about a furlong out. The jockey was taken to hospital for xrays but I believe he is ok.
November 6, 2007 at 11:59 #123180I like that bit in commentary –
"Efficient is feeling the pinch".

The horse picked up really well though.
Well done to Mahler and Purple Moon, great efforts.
November 6, 2007 at 12:02 #123182Yes it was a horrible incident. Mark Zahra has suspected ligament damage to the ankle and Greg Childs was stood down later and couldn’t ride in the MC. The second horse was winded but was OK after she got up.

He’s certainly come a long way since hosting Screen Test.

November 6, 2007 at 12:26 #123189brilliant listening to it on my radio in the early houres [feel like I’m back in the 1930’s]…can anyone tell me anything about this horse On a Jeune? any chance that he might come back next year and do better?? [the name stuck in my mind last year for some reason]. thanks mo
November 6, 2007 at 12:34 #123191You might be remembering Jeune who the Cup in 1994 with Wayne Harris on board.
Kerrin McEvoy said of On A Jeune "He settled well and ran a great race. Andy’s (Payne) done a great job with this horse. He ran as well as he could."
On A Jeune won the Cranbourne Cup this year and prior to that ran second to Makybe Diva in her history making third Melbourne Cup in 2005.
He’ll be 8 next year and is getting a bit long in the tooth probably.
