November 6, 2007 at 13:17 #123203Hihihihi, I’m glad the reference wasn’t lost on everyone, Corm!
Got the theme tune stuck in my head now.

November 6, 2007 at 13:23 #123204It’s funny I was only thinking about programmes I watched as a youngster the other day and one of them I thought of was Screen Test.
I haven’t got the theme tune stuck in my head though.November 6, 2007 at 17:55 #123246Woke up at 4am to watch the race and it was very good. Mahler ran a stormer and am delighted to hear AoB say he will definately (all being well) be back next year and can really see him aswell as Septimus throwing down a great challenge. Will be great if they both make it. Purple Moon ran a cracker aswell and was a bit gutted to see him reeled in but a great run by the winner i have to say. All in all, its what the Classic should have been! Turf is so much better than dirt…
November 6, 2007 at 18:19 #123250My apologies to Mahler for suggesting last week that he may not be man enough for the race.

Sorry to hear about the Brian Ellison horse. He seems to be one unlucky trainer at big meetings. I’m thinking of Latalomne in particular.
Anyone know if he’s OK. According to RP has not raced since PU at M. Rasen in 05.
November 7, 2007 at 09:52 #123367I thought Mr Baster needed to be more aggressive on Mahler. To have any chance he had to be 2 or 3 clear turning in with them all off the bridle behind him- as it was they went half speed as usual until the turn in then sprinted home, when Mahler was staying on all too late. I think a true stayer can win the race but only with a European pace, either making it himself or with a pacemaker. What odds Ballydoyle run more than one horse next year with maybe Mahler setting it up for something classier or better handicapped.
November 7, 2007 at 21:48 #123510My pal in Oz sent me a link to the Sydney Herald website and although it was interesting to read the Aussie reaction to the race and see a video clip, it was also sad to see some extremely graphic images of the Bay Story incident – the sort of thing I don’t think any newspaper over here could get away with. So sad for connections – considering too what happened with Carte Diamond previously.

It was because it was Melbourne Cup day- the papers wouldn’t normally bother about a fall unless it involved a high profile jockey and he was seriously injured. Typical of all newspapers, they just love the sensationalism.

The Carte Diamond footage was taken by sheer chance by the TV station I was with at the time – it was caught on camera at a point when the trackwork was being broadcast live. We didn’t want to release the footage to the mainstream stations because it was such a horrible incident, but unfortunately were overruled by ‘head office’.
That was shown ad infinitum on every channel in Australasia that day, it was sickening.
November 8, 2007 at 08:53 #123561I was so enraged with the pictures of Best Mate in The Daily Mirror after the Exeter tragedy that I haven’t bought the paper since. I wrote a letter of complaint and they urged me to reconsider without even apologising.
Two that stick particularly in the memory, and again they were in either the Mirror or some other red-top, were;
– a photo entitled "Hungary Hur’s fatal stumble at Aintree", to accompany a piece all too eager to point out that two horses had perished in the 1990 National despite the modifications to the course,
– a photo of War Beat falling at Lingfield, literally about half a second before he hit the ground with fatal consequences in what was to become the final all-weather hurdling death before the genre was hurriedly scrapped.
I’m not sure I could condone the publication of these on many levels, if any – not on the grounds of education, as everyone knows what a horse falling looks like; not on the grounds of information, as "horse fell and died" is suitably unambiguous in print to require pictorial clarification; and certainly, certainly not on the grounds of entertainment.

For a bonus point, and without looking it up, can you name the two presenters that followed Michael Rodd?

November 8, 2007 at 12:05 #123602strangely enough have got a diary open next to the desk which I dug out from 1990 to look up something about another horse, and the page that’s open says ‘Unfortunately Hungary Hur was killed; they interviewed his trainer before the race and he said he just wanted him home and safe in his box so he could give him an apple – more lumps in throat’; ever since then I’ve always hated pre race nterviews with people in case it tempts fate.Even the Observer Sport magazine showed a photo of Best Mate…
November 8, 2007 at 13:04 #123608This was the sort of picture of Best Mate they should have shown:

You can buy it here if you like
http://www.sportsgallery.co.uk/best_mate.htmNovember 8, 2007 at 17:59 #123635By the way EFFICIENT was the first Victoria Derby winner to win the Melbourne Cup as a four year old since PHAR LAP in 1930.
On the weekend the 2007 Victoria Derby was won by KIBBUTZ (Golan(Ire) – Misskap (NZ)) and on Thursday the Oaks was won by ARAPAHO MISS (Danehill Dancer (Ire)- Happy Miss (USA))
