Any of Tom Morgan’s circa 1988/89.
Go on tom, Hit it!
October 6, 2007 at 18:43 #118252AP’s ride on Pridwell was a work of genius.
October 8, 2007 at 15:55 #118527Adrain Maguire a 100% trier he could never be accused off pulling a horse.
How he got Cool Ground to win at Cheltenham and his King George win (forget the horse now) I’m sure there were many more.
October 8, 2007 at 16:22 #118533They say that you can give weight away but not ground. Mark Perrett and Run For Free did both in the Scottish National a few years back.
The great thing Mark did that day was not panick when his mount gave the rest of the field a 30 or so lengths lead at the start , but then they proceeded to, slowly but surely, make ground and pass horses until they nailed the final one, Merrymaster, right at the wire.
I’m sure anyone who saw the race will never forget it.
October 8, 2007 at 20:34 #118583you mention Graham Lee’s ride aboard INGLIS DREVER but what about Paddy Brennans ride on the same horse at Cheltenham this year?? – last turning for home after being slightly hampered by BJK’s fall and took off like the proverbial **** off a shovel up the hill !! spose you always remember the ones you backed better but i didnt think i had a chance of collecting even when behaving like a hot knife through butter in the last few furlongs.
Anyway maybe its the horse we should be praising more here – sure am looking forawrd to seeing that horse again!!October 8, 2007 at 20:43 #118586David Nicholson. Mill House. Whitbread. After we thought the horse had been broken by Arkle. Met every fence perfectly. Staggered home by a length. Not a dry eye in the house. A wonderful, wonderful race.
October 8, 2007 at 21:19 #118597With top weight too, and at that stage of his career he must have been (at the very least) a stone inferior to his form as a 6 or 7-y-o.
October 8, 2007 at 21:25 #118601Kevin Mooney – 1984 Whitbread Gold Cup on Special Cargo. Got him jumping, saved ground, rallied to win it on the nod. What a race and a great feat of horsemanship.
October 8, 2007 at 21:26 #118602Scu’s ride on Bonanza Boy stands out. He was so far behind that to this day I can’t believe he won.
Ruby on Inca Trail was pure genius.
Ruby is the business — the list of his triumphis is endless. Whatever he’s achieved on Kauto Star, Azertyuiop etc, nothing can compare with kidding home Inca Trail. The horse was a monkey full stop.As for Ap on Pridwell he was a tad to brutal for me.
November 5, 2007 at 19:32 #123084Jonjo riding Lucky Bay in a big chase at Ayr. Can’t for the life of me remember the name of it.
Lucky Bay could be the laziest most ignorant SOB that ever ran in a race.
Jonjo turned him off completely and kidded him all the way to the line.
November 5, 2007 at 19:42 #123085I think it may be LITTLE Bay that you’re thinking of FoF, if it is, wash your mouth out.

He was one of the most talented chasers around, and who can blame him if some days he just couldn’t be bothered to go past the riff-raff around him!!!

Colin
November 5, 2007 at 22:12 #123111A mention for Andrew Thornton on Kingscliff
If we’re on about all the bits intact then Richard Johnson on Made In Japan in the 2004 Triumph wasn’t half bad either.
November 5, 2007 at 22:41 #123116For Adrian (and any other Kevin Mooney fans!); the tail end of one of the greatest races ever witnessed. I literally ran outside and told everyone I met about it, otherwise I might well have exploded with sheer joy.
November 6, 2007 at 18:44 #123257Can’t remember the exact races concerned (Fighting Fifth may have been one) but Gypsy Dave Goulding’s handling of Ekbalco was something to behold.
He got some stick when he got it wrong, though!
November 6, 2007 at 20:55 #123292Goulding was a real artist on a horse, a lot too quiet for some, of course.

I think he and Richard Guest must have come from the same mould.

Well spotted Colin thanks for correcting me.
Love your riff-raff comment.
I am glad he thought the others were a decent enough lot that day to pass them.
I had a huge bet on him. I was with my very good friend, the late Tony Charlton, who told me I was mad putting my cash on that "old rougue"….I told him I never. I put my money on Jonjo sorting that "Old Rogue out" and he certainly did that day.
November 6, 2007 at 22:41 #123316Theres only one for me RED RUM/BRIAN FLETCHER 1973 Grand National,
i remember watching the race as a 5 year old kid,my dad was going nuts he had a big bet on Rummy(later found out £25)Ive seen the race loads of time since,Brian Fletcher may have had his problems in his private life but he was world class that day.
