As the pilot, Barry would have been aware than anyone that he had his rivals measure and, with a long run-in, only had to let his mount pop the last before gathering him up and winning the race, which he would have.
Then wtf did the RP report this:
his jockey said afterwards that he felt he needed to go for a big one at the last to have any chance of winning.
Jesus wept.

I couldn’t give a hoot what Geraghty said post race. ‘Geraghty
felt
‘ being the quote, Reet. Well he ‘felt’ wrong IMO, and I think he knows it.
A jockey can know he has the measure of a horse and still get a rush of blood at that vital split second, Reet, which is what I saw happen. It was a mistake – nothing more. He remains a fantastic jockey and one I’fd never hesitate to back. Second to only Ruby, IMO.
Technically, I don’t see why not!
But the madness has to cease and a line must be drawn at some point, and it’s here!
Bit late to comment on it, but it was absolutley jockey error.
As the pilot, Barry would have been more aware than anyone that he had his rivals measure and, with a long run-in, only had to let his mount pop the last before gathering him up and winning the race, which he would have. To ask him to jump on the stride he was on was crazy.
If he could do that again he’d pick the other option.
‘Edna Bolger’, the cross country queen!
I’ve got tears in my eyes.

It’s easy to take a step back from this place before you start annoying people – and it’s something, sadly, Pinza never did. For someone as intelligent as him, he had a lack of awareness that was child-like; an interesting character alright.
I’m not even sure if it was his
passion
for racing that was his downfall, as much as enjoying the odd bone a bit too much; he just would not give it up.
All said and done, in the context of a forum on the internet and all it can provide, his words will be missed.
That was as emotional as I’ve ever been after a race – and I really didn’t see either the result or think I had it in me.
Coming to the last, Kauto was at the end of his tether; any other horse would have been lucky to clamber over it, yet he comes up out of Rubys hands and flies it. The jump was wasn’t consistent with how the horse was travelling. What a trooper.
Can’t ignore stable form here, or the fact that NH has said Long Run is almost physically unrecognisable from the horse that won the KG and GC, such is his progress. Of course that makes sense, being a 6yo by Cadoudal.
Weird Al for the saver.
Pompete,
You must be disappointed with the result of your whip poll, has the result had any influence on your thinking on the subject?
I wouldn’t read too much into the poll, eddie, but think about this…
Of the percentage that voted ‘yes’, how many only did so becuase they’re against the new rules? I think it’s easier to vote dishonestly being so passionately against the new rules, than it is for people to be against them and admit their enjoyment hasn’t been affected for the worse.
In a sense, though, my statements on punters and bookies are not about accountancy. These groups
feel
something is wrong, and do not like it. The bookies are worried that this sense of unhappiness will impact on their turnover. In a game which is all about
confidence
– confidence that racing is
fair
,
exciting
and where
everyone is trying their best
– that confidence has, temporarily or not, taken a big knock.
Except it hasn’t really, has it?
You say it’s not about accountancy but then say bookies are worried their turnover might take a hit.

The bookies have nothing to worry about. The punters will keep punting in shops, online and on the course, where they go primarily for a day out.
Even though it’s too early to say for absolute certain – as it is for a few other gloomy predictions – I think it’s quite uncharateristically naive of you to have this negative outlook for the future of the sport, particularly as it’s based on nothing in particular. Or is it a tad selective?
It’d sure bolster the argument if it turned out your prophecy materialised, but I really don’t it will.
How would you feel if, say, 6 months time, the figures are the same or even up on last year?
The Bookies are not happy. The Punters are not happy.
Is this
really
the case?
I wouldn’t say I’ve got my finger as firmly on the pulse of this debate as you have, so I’d be genuinely interested to see any proof of punters staying away from course’s or betting less in shops or online. Is there any? Genuine question, as I really don’t know.
I don’t miss those disgusting creatures that thought they had a divine right to hold a cigarette under your nose whilst all but mounting you in an attempt to read form from where you stood.
Or the bloke who sold his glasses so he could place a 1p monster acca, and so now has to read form from an inch away from the board, obscuring the bit you’d like to see with 30 seconds until off time…
Oh god, I could go on.
I think it’s a case of seeing what you want to see, Pinza.
I’m more than aware by now (by god, I am) of the new changes and I can’t say I even think about them during the race. The horses are still there, the jockeys are still trying and I can’t see what the fuss is about. The ‘fuss’ only starts when it emerges that someone has broken the rules as they stand.
We should be applauding those that are managing to produce great rides under such impossible conditions…apparently.
Young Mr Derham done fantastically well once more, in the Greatwood.
As for Chaninbar – the other side to that is that maybe the new rules saved the horse and jockey from a nasty fall or death for either.
Beating an unwilling horse over a fence isn’t my idea of ‘sport’ or a good idea for any jockey that doesn’t wish to put his life in any more danger than it is already, thus, I’m quite happy with the outcome.
Boring.Oiseau de Nuit
looks on a good mark, with claimer Brendan Powell taking a handy 10lbs off his back. He’ll be 2lbs lower than his last course win at the festival.
Probably prefers a strongly run 2 miles rather than the 2m4f, but will stay all the same. Tizzard looks to have hit a bit of form of late too.
Mon Parrain looks best of the rest!

This is just flippin bizarre! Is it a puzzle of some sort?

To refer to the RSPCA as the ‘undead’ is pretty shitty in any context.
@Reet
I think the "normal" jibe is more in response to Kingfisher’s notion of there being only one side all REAL racing fans can be on
I think this is what was meant. Fair game, I say
