Oh come on you ridiculously rose-tinted specs wearing Engeerrrland fans!

England beat Slovenia 1-0 – wow

They did play better, admittedly, but was

that really a performance of a team capable of going any further

    ?

    Yes, they could beat Germany

but I think we are in serious trouble now. Ghana were more impressive in defeat than Slovenlyia.

The Germans have looked far better than us throughout the tournament. They have a far better flow to their game, can pass quicker and more accurately (please note) and they have far more depth in their squad.

    Of course I

    want

England to win, but if I were betting on the game then 9/5 Germany opposed to 13/10 Eng (Hills) is a steal.

Good luck to those that have backed Eng to win the tourney (as my mate has also done), but I think you’re in dreamland. I may join you, I’m an awful sleeper.

    Zip

I’m a stickler for pointing out faults, but in one sentence you’ve said "was that really a performance of a team capable of going further?

And in your very next sentence you’ve said "Yes, they could beat Germany".

And in your next sentence you’ve said "but if I were betting on the game then 9/5 Germany opposed to 13/10 Eng (Hills) is a steal."

So please clarify… who are you supporting? Who have you backed? Or are you one of these people who say, "told you so" no matter who wins.

From what you’ve said you appear to think the Germans will win, but England can win, but Germany can win, but England can win also. For FFFF sake mate, who do you think will win?

Do you think we’ll beat the Germans or not? For the record, I Think we’ll beat them easily

I’m not really sure what this game/result tells us but hopefully it definitely silences the "we’re not technically good enough" critics.

I’ve always said England can pass a ball, and that the reason we haven’t passed it so far is because we’ve played Heskey up front and the lads have been told to get it up to him as soon as possible.

I’m not a fan of 4-4-2, but at least today we proved (when we’re not hitting it long) that we can pass it, in fact I thought some of England’s inter-play today was exceptional.

Still, it’s a worry that we didn’t put more chances away and that once again we made it uncomfortable for ourselves. But you know what, that’s probably when we are at our best.

I hope we get Germany in the next round because we will get up for that more than we will for Serbia or Ghana, and we’ll also be up for the Argies in the QF if we get that far. I know we should be up for every game, but for some reason England only play well when their backs are against the wall.

Forget that… looks like he’s playing 4-4-2 with Gerrard out wide again

Off to pub now, hope I return happy.

Hehe, you’re getting a bit carried away Walter. Wait until they play a decent team and that defence of theirs gets really tested :D

You have it slightly wrong One Eye.
They were told to take the price 5 minutes before the race but that price ended up being 5/1. As you say some of the foreign lads got very confused. Nice idea in theory though.

Thanks Carvill. Still, 200 Euro at any price above 5/1 I would have thought would need the ‘cashier’ to ring through for acceptance. Maybe I’m just going on where I live, anyone with a £20 bet would raise suspicion here :D

Anyone who looks for value have to look at the 2/1 about Chile winning their group.Spain at 4/5 looks too risky for a team that are trying to walk the ball into the net again! A draw will see Chile top! If Switzerland stick 3 goals passed Honduras and Spain only draw,Spain are out!!!!

Scary times for the original favs of the Competition!Spain must win and ideally with at least 2 goals! I"m not confident!

You’ve got most of this wrong TAPK, especially the bit I’ve highlighted in bold.

If Spain win they will DEFINITELY qualify regardless of how many goals Switzerland score. Spain are plus one goal difference, Chile are plus two, so a single goal victory for Spain will reverse that goal difference and put them ahead of Chile.

You also say if Switzerland score three against Honduras and Spain only draw then the Spanish are out, but again, it’s irrelevant how many goals the Swiss score. If Spain draw and Switzerland win by any score (not just by scoring three) then the Spanish are out.

I don’t think there are any strange prices at all. Spain are about 4/9 to beat Chile which is about right. A win will take them above Chile and very likely keep them above the Swiss.

For the Swiss to finish top they need to record a win which is one goal more than what Spain achieve. If Spain win 1-0 the Swiss need to win 2-0, if Spain win 2-0 then the Swiss need to win 3-0. This is because Spain have one bettere goal difference and have scored more goals than the Swiss. If the above scenario were to happen however, both Spain and Switzerland would be on level points, level goal difference, and the same amount of goals scored so Swiss would top the group on the head-to-head between the two teams.

But personally I think the Honduras team isn’t that bad. Chile only beat them by a single goal and a brilliant Spanish team only scored twice against them. Although I can see the Swiss winning, it won’t be by a wide margin therefore I’d have to fancy Spain to top the group if they get the win against Chile.

Whenever have you known the bookies to get prices wrong :D

Hope all this makes sense and keep the faith with your Spain/Villa bet – it’s got a great chance of collecting (I think).

Almost every jockey in the weighing room has fallen out with Channon at some point in their career. It’s pretty much a requirement of holding a senior licence.

Channon evens imports Australians and then falls out with them as well.

    AP

I’m guessing it must be pretty easy to fall out with an Australian :D

He wasn’t Channon’s main jockey Matthew, he was just riding a lot of his horses earlier in the season and now he’s riding none of them :D

A possible fall-out perhaps from when Fallon chose the Cumani horse over Music Show in the Guineas.

    And

    why

are Spain odds on to win their group?!
If Chile get a win or a draw against them and the Swiss do for Honduras then it’s goodnight Vienna for the Spaniards! So impossible to believe?

Why’s it impossible to believe Zippy? Effectively, if Spain beat Chile they will top the group… and in a match between Spain and Chile, Spain will be odds on to win the match so not sure where you are coming from.

Admitedly, if Switzerland beat Honduras more than Spain beat Chile then the Swiss will top the group but the odds are definitely correct.

That’s not to say Spain will win the group, all I am saying is that the odds are correct. Personally I think Spain v Chile will be an incredibly tight match – a draw will probably mean goodnight Spain as I’m confident the Swiss will beat Honduras, albeit probably narrowly.

As I said in a previous thread Wallace, Argentina look dreadful in defence (did you see the goal they conceded the other day).

I’m not saying they won’t win because I agree they have an immense attacking line, but their defence is poor and the midfield isn’t really that great (Veron – getting on a bit; Mascherano – not very creative).

They may have scored four the other day but that was against the group’s ‘supposed’ weakest team so no surprise there. They weren’t that impressive against Nigeria, and I’m not sure that Maradonna is the real deal.

Having said that, at least Maradonna makes tactical changes which is more than can be said for a certain Italian manager in charge of a foreign country at the World Cup.

Good luck whether you’ve backed or just supporting the Argies.

Great stuff Nathan, really good read this thread.

It’s not only Ladbrokes who make blunders on their odds, the other day Stan James went 5/4 Brazil HT Brazil FT against the Ivory Coast. They also went 10/11 Brazil to win both halves

I think some of these companies are so hell bent on giving a price on every market they are making a few mistakes. Unfortunately, the mistakes aren’t in our favour really as the 5/4 Brazil HT Brazil FT was the general price across every bookie. So Brazil to win both halves should have been a tad higher, perhaps 13/8 or 7/4 but almost certainly not 10/11.

Anyway, keep posting your selections as it’s working so far and I’m seriously thinking of giving it a go in another sport where I have a bit of success.

I wish you all the best of luck in the world mate, great stuff.

I’m staggered that anyone would even use the term broadcaster in the same sentence as Willie Carson.

The bloke’s not even related to a broadcaster in my opinion.

Agreed, which might go some way to explain why Chapman is clear in this particular vote.

Oh god, imagine Carson in a booth, trying to press all them buttons and read emails

Mind you, revers the roles; imagine Chapman stood on a box voicing his opinions. Oh, he does that quite regularly :D

You voted for Thommo in a match with Lydia Hislop :?:

Each to their own, I guess….

The last time I looked they each had 50% so yes, it’s very much each to their own. If we were all the same the world would be a very boring place :D

He’s having a mare isn’t he (Johnson that is)?

All good for my 80/1 ticket on McDowell (mentioned pre-tournament), only wish I’d backed him on Betfair so that I could lay some off – he’s into 1.7 as I write after Els makes a mess of the 10th.

McDowell should have a three or four shot lead in about two minutes, but over this course I’m still not confident. Good luck Graeme, do it for yourself and me :D

I like RUK, but as a small-wagering punter who doesn’t always have a laptop in front of me, I find it incredibly annoying that they very rarely show the prices of the horses in the lead-up to a race.

In comparison to ATR – who have the horses silks, current price, tote and exchange odds on show right up to the off – RUK’s offering is very disappointing. They put up a graphinc with the horse’s odds on a few times at best in a six or seven minute lead-up to a race. I find myself (even in this day and age) pressing the text button to get the latest odds.

Some will say that ‘in this day and age’ I should have a laptop in front of me, but as I say I’m a small-wagering punter who 90% of the time places my bets on a morning. All I want is to be able to check the odds (and colours) of my horse at a quick glance, just like you can do on ATR prior to every single race when they don’t have an overly-busy schedule.

Subject: Which team will lift the WORLD CUP on July 11th?

    Answer: NOT England

Especially if he perseveres with that awful 4-4-2 totally ineffective system.

If I was Joe Cole I’d just go home. The only ‘natural’ (I say that hesitantly) left-sided midfielder in the squad and so far Capello has played Milner, Wright-Phillips, Gerrard and Rooney in that position ahead of him.

90% of this England team DON’T play 4-4-2 for their club teams, Rooney was far better for United this season as a lone striker, Gerrard plays best as an attacking midfielder, Wright-Phillips couldn’t get a game for Man City once Adam Johnson joined. Am I being over critical or is Capello the only man in the world who can’t see any of this?

And to think he gets paid £6m a year as the England manager.

Admitedly, a lot of our players aren’t good enough to win a World Cup, but they’d have a far better chance if they were employed in their correct positions and in a system that suits.

    Rant over.

…i just think its better to go out at the top

But that’s already too late, he would have had to be retired some three or four years ago to ‘go out at the top’.

Let us not forget this horse won back-to-back races less than 12 months ago, has had many places since, and still has an official rating of 70. Believe me, this a a lot better than most horses 10 years his younger.

Even at the age of 13 The Tatling is still a competitve animal. Good luck to him.
