I found 3 of the contests too difficult to call and had to abstain, thought Carson v Chapman was particularly tricky although it looks like Chapman has it well in the bag, belying the myth that is often put forward that Carson is popular with the general public.
Found the other 5 quite easy to choose from with votes for Lydia, Luck, O’Brien, Emma and Cooper.June 21, 2010 at 19:15 #302509Voted for Thommo, Francome, Chapman and McCririck.
Judged on the current figures seems a certain disparity between what those within and outside the sport think of Luck.
June 21, 2010 at 19:22 #302511You voted for Thommo in a match with Lydia Hislop

Each to their own, I guess….

The last time I looked they each had 50% so yes, it’s very much each to their own. If we were all the same the world would be a very boring place
June 21, 2010 at 19:47 #302517John Francome
June 21, 2010 at 19:56 #302519I’m staggered that anyone would even use the term broadcaster in the same sentence as Willie Carson.

The bloke’s not even related to a broadcaster in my opinion.

Agreed, which might go some way to explain why Chapman is clear in this particular vote.
Oh god, imagine Carson in a booth, trying to press all them buttons and read emails

Mind you, revers the roles; imagine Chapman stood on a box voicing his opinions. Oh, he does that quite regularly
June 22, 2010 at 00:10 #302559Chapman v Down final hopefully!
June 22, 2010 at 01:17 #302565Chapman should win easily.
June 22, 2010 at 06:36 #302574This would make a fantastic betting heat…
If Lydia can get past Thommo (a close battle at present), she could record a shock victory here imo – with Nick Luck seemingly struggling to get past Francome and Claire Balding also in trouble, I think Lydia could get all of the thinking man’s vote from the semi-finals onwards…
June 22, 2010 at 07:39 #302579dont know how or intend to log on to the site which enables us to vote,
why are results published in percentages, presumably numbers of voters would make it embarrassing,

I changed the percentages with one vote in most of the first rounds yesterday morning but that didn’t happen in the 2nd round, reckon chappers must be getting all his friends & family to vote for him.
June 22, 2010 at 10:42 #302602looking at the offerings and results of the recent best horse categories, it suggests to me that it was aimed more at the Irish reader and polarised their opinions more than any other demographic group.
Similarly ATR which includes Matt Chapman – has a fair degree of Irish influence and coverage. Willie Carson on BBC barely gets any.I did a popularity poll on this forum 3 years ago including most of these presenters, [admittedly doubling them up and inexplicably omitting Thompson], when I think there were not so many Irish members here.
From only 35 votes though, Clare Balding and Willie Carson came out on top.https://theracingforum.co.uk/horse-r … 70122.html
..perhaps someone else would like to do another.
June 22, 2010 at 10:54 #302603How is Alister boring Down beating John McCririck? Scandalous!!
June 22, 2010 at 13:00 #302631Shouldn’t Sean Boyce be included in this?
Cattermole and Gary O’Brien looked beaten by the draw IMO against Francome ( not a great broadcaster by any means but undoubtedly hard to beat on popularity and for the want of a better word charisma)and McCririck ( The Marmite man of horseracing TV).If this is purely about the ability to braodcast Carson would deservedly get trounced by anyone in this field (possibly even the charmless Tanya and Emma) but his feel for breeding and confirmation is always worth hearing and I also like his unfailing modesty about his brilliant career as a jockey( seems genuinely disinterested in having it brought up which is a nice trait)
Watching brilliant broadcaster Claire Balding navigate her way around the minefield of Carson’s garbled grammar pronunciation and border line inappropriateness is becoming a genuinely compelling part of the fun.
