As reported in today’s RP (not sure what page I’m just going off Sky Sports News), this was almost an almighty gamble but for some people not understanding how to place a bet, or not taking their slip to the counter on time.
But it’s reported that each person was to take their bet to the counter at exactly the same time with 200 EURO on D For Dave at the 14/1 odds on display.
My question is, just how many bookmakers would have accepted this bet anyway?
I don’t know if it differs geographically, but I know where I live (Scunny) all of the big three bookies would not accept a bet of £200 on a 14/1 shot without ringing it through for acceptance. And even then they’d probably come back an say that I can have £50 on at 14/1 and the rest at 10/1 or something.
Is it really that easy to put 200 EURO on a 14/1 shot in some places (without any problems)?
June 23, 2010 at 10:34 #302735You have it slightly wrong One Eye.
They were told to take the price 5 minutes before the race but that price ended up being 5/1. As you say some of the foreign lads got very confused. Nice idea in theory though.June 23, 2010 at 11:05 #302745You have it slightly wrong One Eye.

Still, 200 Euro at any price above 5/1 I would have thought would need the ‘cashier’ to ring through for acceptance. Maybe I’m just going on where I live, anyone with a £20 bet would raise suspicion here

One Eye, did you not mean to say….anyone with £20 would raise suspicion here?
June 23, 2010 at 14:01 #302771Sending people with little or no English into shops with an alarm going off on a wristwatch and a set of instructions in an envelope was foolhardy.
Barney must have had a chuckle when he picked-up the rag to read his own letter this morning.June 23, 2010 at 19:27 #302828Did they pull the gamble off?!
June 24, 2010 at 11:44 #302916According to todays reports they won over £200k even allowing for the bets that didn`t get on through ignorance, late placed and so on.
June 24, 2010 at 19:21 #302980The boys must be hungry for publicity or attention seekers.they failed to make the most of a winning hand and if they wanted to go again at a later date they haven’t helped their chances.

I don’t think so. I had trouble getting three £100 Ew doubles and a £100 ew treble on with on of "the big three" earlier this year, it was accepted after some delay..OK one was in a novice hurdle, one was a hunter chase, both around the 3-1 mark, the other was 9-4 favourite in a handicap.
I did post about it at the time and was called "an Ew thief" or words to that effect by more than one member. The good news is they all won.
I can well believe some of these bets o Monday would be refused in the smaller Irish shops.June 24, 2010 at 19:38 #302985None of the shops I know would give a second thought to accepting 200 @5s just before a race.

The latter imo. Gambling it certainly aint.

Yes PC, I’m an Iron fan alright. Thanks for not taking offence to my £20 jibe then, though if you’re from Scunny then you’ll know I’m probably right
June 25, 2010 at 15:14 #303091It’s true what they say, the best gambles are those you never hear about. Bookies have had their cards marked very cheaply by this over elaborate carry on. Wait till he tries to get more than 50 quid on anything odds-against next time.
